If you named your band after a song title or something from a book, what would it be?

Me? Hmm... 92 in the Shade, after the McGuane novel. Hope it hasn't been taken. Or Modern World after the Modern Lovers song.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, or maybe Wintermute.

sorry, heathen. :p

The Moon..... is my favorite book by Robert Heinlein. I like this name because I like:
  • the moon
  • harsh mistresses
Wintermute is an AI antagonist from the Gibson novel Neuromancer.

Confederacy of Dunces from the book.

White Teeth, also from the book.

Savage Clone 01.04.2008 08:02 PM

My band's name is a pretty blatant film/film soundtrack reference.

My imaginary band has always been called Flex, after the Dischord compilation "Flex Your Head".

From a book:
Youth of the Apocalypse- Youth of the Apocalypse
The Cry Grows Louder- also Youth of the Apocalypse
Myself Am Hell- Paradise Lost

From a song:
Little Furry Things- Dinosaur Jr.
Life Like Weeds- Modest Mouse
Crystal Gypsy- Sebadoh
The Spark That Bled- the Flaming Lips

I got kind of crazy there, but when I saw this thread it really got the blood pumping. I think about this stuff all the time as it is.

I've had an imaginary band called Lady Boss, named after the Jackie Collins novel, for years now. Just imagine a band that based their entire sound on reading Guns n'Roses and Motley Crue reviews, without ever actually listening to either band. That's what Lady Boss would sound like. Amazing huh?

Damn. I've gotten that song title wrong my entire life.

UVRAY 01.09.2008 05:28 PM

As a pseudonym I took U.V.Ray from the song by The Jesus & Mary Chain. I was young and thought it sounded good.

If I'd known I was going to become as published as I have been I would have just used my real name but now I am stuck with it.

There was a band called The Desolation Angels after the book by Kerouak. I thought that was a good name for a band.

batreleaser 01.09.2008 05:29 PM

im in a band with my brother and a friend at the moment called "blindeshitzu", which is just a dumbassed name we came up with when playing with my 90 percent blind old shit zu dog (or however you spell it).

ive played in many other bands but always have used dumb goofy names.

since im a nick cave fanatic maybe "released bat" or "murderous love" (LAME) or "proposition" from the film.

i also love hermann hesse, i like how "beautiful courtesan" sounds, that being a reference to siddhartha's love interest in the novel of his name.

or maybe "la persestencia de memoria" which could be for dali's painting or einstein's theory that the painting is based upon.

When it comes down to it, i think that taking a band name that seriously is kinda dumb. I like random names, "The Stooges", "The Godz", "Melt Bannana", "Lightning Bolt", etc...
