Holy crap.
Don't get me wrong... Battles' Mirrored kicks ass. Great album, lots of wicked, well-written tunes...
...but Leyendecker has got to be one of the worst things I have ever heard. It sounds like some shitty, forgotten boy bandfrom the mid-90s, who fired their lyricists, and decided to just do a song consisting of really annoying humming. Oh, and they couldn't actually sing, so they used effects or pitchshifters or whatever the hell Battles use... So yeah... great album... with one of the worst songs of all-time. |
bollocks
|
I disagree. Maybe it doesn't 'mesh' with the rest perfectly, but it sure as hell isn't one of the worst songs ever.
|
I really enjoy Leyendecker... The R'n'B-like drum rythm sounds fantastic with these high-pitched vocals, in my opinion
|
People talk too much about battles.

Yeah, they should stop battling about Battles :D Sorry for the crappy pun but that's what crossed my mind... |
yeah, one of the songs on that album that just doesn't work at all.
my reasons for disliking it are dissimiliar to yours, but the song just stinks. it is proof that battles aren't very good songwriters -- take away their amazing drummer, pristine production, and nice guitar lines and you realize, "wait, they're not actually good SONGWRITERS." and that's something that's important to me. said it once, say it again:SLEEPING PEOPLE. way better. |

i dont get that songwriting comment.. isnt that like saying Jesus wasnt really a good carpenter..take away the chairs legs and seat and your left with a backing that makes you say "wait..jesus isnt actually a good CARPENTER" :p |
i mean that their songs on mirrored don't have a good flow to them.
|
is it soon going to be the 'thing' to not dig battles because everyone is digging them?
i know i know, you like them, your say sayin |
They write good songs but don't necessarily have the album flow thing down. Don Cab still blows my mind in many more ways.
|
I really dig the ep's. Mirrored is, has been, and always will be flawed.
And Don Cab are AMAZING. |

Sleeping People and Battles have nothing in common, even if they're both classified in math rock. Sleeping People is math rock. Period. Now Battles is something more than just crazy rythms and crazy time signature, and that's why they're by far better in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I like Sleeping People but Mirrored is by far more creative and interesting (in my opinion at least) than Growing |
Quirky for the sake of it. Yawn.
|
Mirrored is perfect. I love every minute of it.
|
I must admit that I've played that record to a friend and she loved it so much she is now a fan. I don't have much time for them.
|
Mirrors isn't all that. Get B+C EP.
|
sleeping people and battles are pretty damn similiar, structurally and in their guitar lines and such. but battles has the alvin and the chipmunks.

what the heck does that even mean. |

By the way I could never get into them, that voice annoys me.
|
They sound alright. But overrated comes to mind when listening to them.
|
here it comes
the down fall of battles should of seen it coming earlier :P well go to hell you lot, ill be seeing them in less than a month and its gonna be nuts! |
They were never at the top for me as I'd never heard them 'til a few minutes ago. But like I said, I didn't mind them but from all the Battles wanking that goes on here, I guess I expected more. I won't be purchasing no Battles record.*
*Subject to change at any time. |
most people i know have said its taken then a few listenings to get into battles
i recommend giving them a few listens through the week and then seeing what u think dont let the battles wanking play with your judgement |
I have given listens to them, but they still don't amuse me.
|
That is your misfortune, sir.

Yeah EP C / B EP is really great too, even if in my opinion Mirrored is way better. |
I prefer the eps more, too. They don't have total shite songs like Leyendecker.
|
I know one thing. I'm tired of the whole Battles debate. You either do or you don't, and whichever side you fall on, it really does feel like yesterday's news. I mean, this came out in, what, May?
|
the eps are way too DATED. they sound like they were recorded at least in 1995, if not the 70's, i'm sick of them and i'll be glad if i never hear them again.
mirrored is alright, nothing revolutionary or anything, some tunes are alright, some aren't. don cab is so much better it's not funny. ian should go apologize to damon che and perhaps let john stainer play double drums in don cab. now that's a band! |
Quote:
i just got 'for respect' and 'don cab 2' on vinyl while in manhattan over the weekend. i love those records sooooo much. the reformed doncab tho is really not good at all, pretty depressing. |
and as for battles, theyre good. i refused to pay for mirrored so i just ripped it offline and am in agreement that theyre tight as fuck and have good production, but they are far from mindblowing.
|
Ever wonder if people like any music at all?
|
No, I've never wondered.
Music that a lot of people claim to really enjoy, certain fad bands such as this one, get everyone excited for a day or two.. and then they get forgotten about........... and then months later, if you feel the urge to dig out that antique recording again, maybe you'll say to yourself, "wow, they really were good afterall!" Unfortunately, I don't see myself ever listening to mirrored again, despite thinking it was pretty cool when it first came out. Honestly, why listen to this when I can listen to Snakefinger or something? On the other hand, I am not going to rebel against Battles, because at least they ARE talented, if inconsistent. Most bands that people jerk off over have absolutely NOTHING going for them. I'm sick of innovative, talented, forward-thinking bands being overlooked to make more room for bands that do nothing but stay in a little box. Battles are in a very enviable place, and they could really do something revolutionary and amazing with it. But I'm pretty sure that they're just going to get worse and worse from here. It's a shame, because their drummer is king. But yeah.. Don Cab.. we need to talk about them more.. they had alligator clips on their guitar strings. Great band. |
could of seen this coming a mile away
|
I like that song!
|
oh dear god! oh pitys sake! may the lord forgive your thirsty souls! what the fuck! erm, yeah, whatever! mna mna man man man man! and all other thought projections which appeared when i read this thread!
battles, once loved by all, got popular, pissed off those people and now hated by many for being too popular! ha! no i am being a tad overironic there..... my opinion... battles- mirrored, best album of 2007 , not by a mile but it is the best album of the year. stunningly amazingly tight and gifted musicians making palatable records for to dance and chin stroke to. hi brow music for lo brow audience.... nah, fuck it... mirrored rocks and leyendecker is an awesome song! their eps are also amazing but too much filler!!!!! don cab, they are a different thing but are amazing too.. world class listening problem and american don rule all! sleeping people, growing is in my top 10 releases of 2007. incredible band but again not the same as battles, they are more greener than that! great great band.... everyone,,, go out and buy ahleuchatistas new album even in the midst... now thats fucking awesome! |
that sums it up
|
i love leyendecker!!!
