The Metal Thread
I've been looking for new metal lately. I barely know many metal bands right now, but I'd like to hear more. I'm into Sunn0))), Khanate, Jesu, WRAITHS, and those, and Goatsnake and Sigh are fucking fantastic. Check them out
|
I like sunn0))).
|
dude, Jesu is one awesum band. everything with Ted Parsons involved in simply rules. that's not conventional metal tho, and thats' why i like them. how about these bands:
PRONG (Ted Parsons' band after THE SWANS) MINISTRY (godfathers of industrial in metal) CORONER (swiss band which quit in 1994. check out GRIN from 1993 and the S/T album which came out in 95) SADUS (active since 1984. last album came out early may, OUT FOR BLOOD. seriously wicked shit.) |
dude, GWAR.
stoner metal is pretty cool, too. Kyuss is a favorite of mine. |
so prong is good?
i was looking through the metal lps at a record store and they had some record of theirs, the cover caught my eye and i liked the name. ill check em out. |
you should. every album is worth the price, especially PROVE YOU WRONG, BEG TO DIFFER, CLEANSING and RUDE AWAKENING. Tommy Victor was a sound tech for the CBGB in the early SY days, I bet he teched for them a pair of times. the new line up shreds, too bad Ted isn't there anymore.
|
![]() I like doing this cross things... Darren on the italian leg of the SADUS 2006 tour, with the PRONG shirt I gave him! :D ![]() my buddy Yared, Darren and me chilling out backstage! |
overkill-years of decay or under the influence. they are hilarious!
|
Thrones- A Day Late, A Dollar Short
Its Joe Preston from Melvins/Earth/High on FIre and its his kind of quirkysludge thing, the album i picked up is Thrones first in 5 years and is on SOuthern Lord. speaking of thrones...... I have recently become a big Darkthrone fan, there stuff is pretty punky and raw. Transilvanian Hunger is one of the most grimm albums i've ever heard. If you like the sound of Sun0)))- Black One you'll probably enjoy this. |
Anyone listen to Strapping Young Lad?
|
ok, step aside...
if you're into stuff like sunn o))), khanate, earth, etc. check out asva, burning witch, thorr's hammer, ocean, sleep, the goslings, electric wizard, om. if you are into the less doomy, more rocking, faster yet still sabbathy stuff, then check out kyuss, fu manchu, early monster magnet, early cathedral, some paradise lost, crowbar, eyehategod, clutch and high on fire. hmmm, i'm into a lot of metal, too much, i might post a primer of great essential metal albums. (not too long ago, john violence did a thread of thrash metal and i posted a big list of albums) |
I got to open for Asva once (I think scott v did too), and they slayed me.
Electric Wizard are incredible too, one of the finest of their ilk. |
ohhh yeah, if you like jesu, then you have to check out godflesh.
|
Got ripped for saying this once but Opeth are great too.
Bring on download fest! |
how about some love for motorhead. I just really started listening to their stuff and its great. A lot better than that crappy doom metal shit where the singer sounds like he's about to couhg up a lung.
|
I love Motorhead, but don't really consider them to be metal per se.
Definitely essential though! |
forbidden is pretty good old thrash, it has the guitarist from machine head in it but don't let that put you off
carcass are good too |
Quote:
check out dead meadow and acid king.... although they're not metal, but theeyr'e heavy and have great vocals |
Quote:
the first machine head album is amazing, it all went downhill after that. also i've heard wonderful things about vio-lence, the band robb flynn went on after forbidden but before starting machine head, but i've never heard any music by them. |
ok, here's a list of some of my favorite albums that are considerated metal. this albums are heavy as heavy can be, it's not a nomenclature thing (like say, i didn't included any "hair metal" albums because i don't consider them metal since they aren't particularly heavy) or generalizations (some of my choices will not seem metal to you at all). anyway, here are some of my choices:

Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny Iron Maiden - Killers Motörhead - Ace Of Spades Black Flag - My War Sodom - Persecution Mania Metallica - first 4 albums Slayer - pretty much everything, although my fave currently is Live Undead (Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven or the Haunting The Chapel EP are probably the best places to start) Corrosion Of Conformity - Animosity Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales, To Mega Therion, Into The Pandemonium Die Kreuzen - Die Kreuzen Exodus - Bonded By Blood Possessed - Seven Churches Kreator - Extreme Aggression Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus Voivod - Rrroooaaarrr Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Megadeth - first 4 albums Anthrax - Among The Living and Sounds Of White Noise Napalm Death - Scum and From Enslavement To Obliteration D.R.I. - Dealing With It Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness Godflesh - Streetcleaner Melvins - Bullhead Entombed - Left Hand Path and Wolverine Blues Testament - The New Order Sepultura - Beneath The Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D., Roots Coroner - Mental Vortex Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger Painkiller - Guts Of A Virgin Pantera - Far Beyond Driven Ministry - Psalm 69 White Zombie - La Sexorcisto Helmet - Meantime Quicksand - Slip Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror Earth - Earth 2 Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Burzum - Aske Venom - Welcome To Hell, Black Metal and In League With Satan Bathory - Bathory Machine Head - Burn My Eyes Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley Monster Magnet - Dopes To Infinity Fu Manchu - King Of The Road Brutal Truth - Need To Control Samael - Ceremony Of Opposition Eyehategod - Dopesick Prong - Cleansing Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul In Flames - Jester Race Dissection - Storm Of the Light's Bane Fear Factory - Demanufacture Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger Boris - Absolutego Tool - Aenima Karp - Self Titled LP Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk Bardo Pond - Lapsed Neurosis - Enemy Of The Sun Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity Angel Corpse - The Inexorable Cryptopsy - None So Vile Electric Wizard - Dopethrone Cave In - Until Your Heart Stops Isis - Oceanic Oxes - Oxxxes Comets On Fire - Blue Cathedral Converge - Petitioning The Empty Skies Cursed - One Sunn O))) - Black One Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain Darkest Hour - So Sedated So Secure or Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dream Mastodon - Leviathan Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings Jesu 400 Blows - Angel's Trumpets and Devil's Trombones Unsane Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw Behemoth - Demigod Asva - Futurists Against The Ocean Enslaved - Isa Ocean - Here Where Nothing Grows Sleep - Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker The Goslings - Between The Dead Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies Deicide - Scars Of The Crucifix Wigrid - Die Asche Eines Lebens Force Fed Glass - Fined Tuned Chaos Motherfucker Carcass - Reek Of Putrefaction, Symphonies of Sickness, Necrotiscm and Heartworks Deftones - Around The Fur Cro-Mags - Age Of Quarrel Ruins - Pallaschtom |
Goddamn everyneurotic, thanks. I'm going to check out some of that.
I don't feel I've ever been properly introduced to metal, and that list should help put me some where in the metal genre. |
one thing i have noticed, at least 3 female SY fans I know are huge Slayer fans also,
so i gotta ask the ladies, are you big SY AND Slayer fans? |

That band must have the worst vocals ever. Other than that and a few others which are a bit cheesy for my liking its a good list. Good to see Eyehategod getting some lovin |
Quote:
who's the third one? i'm blanking at the moment. borknagr's self-titled record is great...and i'd say every pantera record (post- glam shit, which is long out of print anyway) is worth a listen. "screaming for vengeance" by judas priest...damn everyneurotic, that is as close to a perfect list as you'll find... |
La Sexorcisto is my favorite metal album. White Zombie rules.
|
i never listened to my war till today, a WHOLE different side of black flag. i love it
|

hell yes, i remember the first time i heard the first song i was "is this supposed to be the best doom album ever" it's the closest doom has ever come to power metal. but after the first song, the vocals kind of fit in a weirdo way, it is a great album. EDIT:: shit!!! i forgot carcass!!! i also decided to put deftones' around the fur since it's quite bleak and textured and qualifies as heavy in my book. |
check out a band called Baroness. saw them supporting capricorns who are also excellent but Baroness savaged them that night, kind of classic metal, kind of hardcore-y kind of thrash. bliss.
|
check this stuff:
SADUS: SWALLOWED IN BLACK SADUS: A VISION OF MISERY SADUS: ELEMENTS OF ANGER SADUS: OUT FOR BLOOD CORONER: GRIN CORONER: CORONER PRONG: CLEANSING PRONG: RUDE AWAKENING PRONG PROVE YOU WRONG PRONG: BEG TO DIFFER MINISTRY: THE LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY MINISTRY: RIO GRANDE BLOOD MINISTRY: THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE MINISTRY: PSALM 69 DEATH: INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS DEATH: HUMAN DEATH: SYMBOLIC OBITUARY: CAUSE OF DEATH there's more I can't think of right now... |
Never thought I 'd see Death get a mention on here...

Isn't Seventh son of the seventh son by Maiden so muh better than Killers? Or Number of the beast for that matter Vulgar display of power kicks far beyond drivens arse. Lateralus. Not Aenima, there's to many filler on that album. |
Quote:
first of all. i said it was MY list of favorite albums. second, i like killers far better than seventh son... (too long and boring for my taste) or number (while it has some incredible songs in there, it has also many weak ones). in fact, the only maiden album that rivals killers in my opinion is powerslave. vulgar, while being a classic, doesn't really cut it like far beyond does for me; side two is very weak with a couple of stand out tracks and also, dime's riffs have been recycled so much i feel like i'm listening to a deftones or coal chamber album. lateralus is a fantastic album but it's not a HOLY FUCKING HELL WHO DID THEY DO THAT? why don't you do your list? |
here are a few more to the list, they kind of float more on the melodic metal:
russian circles the torch the sword paik pelican these arms are snakes les savoy fav mastadon earth crisis i definitely word further recommend isis, jesu (especially silver ep), and deftones any day. |
^Earth Crisis....hell yeah dude.
|
check out http://www.darksoul7.com/indexVideo.html ...
some vids really kick ass...others are just funny... tipp: the first immortal video is funny as hell...^^ gandalf is alive... |
Quote:
Me, do a list? Ok then. I'll keep it short and sweet Slayer-Reign in Blood (essential) Megadeth-So Far, So Good, do What or maybe Rust in peace Iron Maiden-Seventh son of the seventh son Testement- The new order Metallica-Master of Puppets Pantera-Vulgar display of power Opeth-Deliverance Death-anything except 'scream bloody gore' Anthrax-Among the living The essestials remember |
Quote:
Yeah Mastodon are pretty sweet. I heard them at the same time as when I heard Isis, so I often get the two confused even though they sound quite different |
lordy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() go finland! |
