Hip Hop: Your Favorites
i love weird loud music, whether it be punk in its various forms, ditto metal, noise, avant garde, industrial, idm, free jazz, avant jazz, shoegaze, mathrock, blah blah etc... and these are the types of music i usually focus on when creating music of my own, whether it be in a band, or recording on my trumpet/guitar on my own. But, I realize that when you are playing music in a certain vain, then it becomes easy to tire of this music. For instance, I was playing in this band last year and we were doing like a royal trux slayer type band, we were playing together and listening to tunes every day. i then found that on my own id be listening to more hip hop, dance, and pop music more than the stuff id be playing with the band, like the beatles, beach boys, curtis mayfield, lotta daft punk, and tons and tons and tons of hip hop. I however absolutley really love a lot of hip hop. Its a shame how bad mainstream has gotten, with the exception of lil wayne and kanye west, because in the 90's to early 00's it seemed as if hip hop was the BEST popular music. Anyways, what are your favorite hip hop artists and your favorite alblums by these artists...
Me: Wu Tang Clan-Enter the 36 Chambers (the most important hip hop alblum ever, i said it) Public Enemy-It Takes a Nation of Million to Hold Us Back (2nd most important), Fear of a Black Nation Biggie-Ready to Die Nas-Illmatic Company Flow-Funcrusher Plus Ghostface-Supreme Clientele, Fishscale GZA-Liquid Swords Raekwon-Only Built for Cuban Linx ODB-Return to the 36 Chambers, Nigga Please Madvillian-Madvilliany Viktor Vaughn-Vaudeville Villain Bone Thugs n Harmony-Crossroads Camron-Purple Haze (he sucks bad now though) Cannibal Ox-The Cold Vein (what happened to these dudes, this alblum was brilliant) Clipse-Hell Hath No Fury De La Soul-3 feet high and Rising Dead Prez-Its Bigger than Hip Hop Dr. Dre-The Chronic NWA-straight outta compton dr octagon-dr octagonecologyst el p-fantasitc damage goodie mob-soul food eric b and rakim-paid in full lil wayne-carter 2, dedication mobb deep-the infamous the roots-illadelph halflife a tribe called quest-midnight marauders, low end theory gravediggaz-6 feet deep, the pick the sickel and the shovel ultramagnetic mc's-critical beatdown boogie down productions-criminal minded |

PUBLIC ENEMY - Nation of Millions, Fear of a Black planet, Apocalypse 91
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST - people's instinctive tarvels, midnight marauders, low end theory DE LA SOUL - 3 Feet High, De La Is Dead, Buhloon Mindstate, Stakes is High DIGITAL UNDERGROUND - Sex packets ERIC B. & RAKIM - Paid In Full, Follow The Leader BEASTIE BOYS - Paul's Boutique, Check Yr Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty DIGABLE PLANETS - Reachin' MC SERCH - Return of the Product GANG STARR - Hard To Earn, daily ooperation, No More Mr Nice Guy GURU - JAZZAMATAZZ RUN DMC - Run Dmc, Raising Hell, King of Rock GETO BOYS - Geto Boys, We Can't Be Stopped. Uncut Dope public enemy is the pinnacle. the Bob Marley and the Wailers of Hip Hop. Biggie Smalls was just a fat fuck turd looking to make money to feed his 10,000 a day calorie habit. The Geto Boys make NWA and Dre and EZ look like the poser college boys they were. |
Jay Z's The Blueprint is very good and reminds me of Gang Star's Hard To Earn with its deep, jazzy and soulful beats and heartfelt lyrics (well, there's still a bit of bragging and dissing but its confined to a couple of tracks and his lines are quite smart anyway). It's consistent: every song is strong, and its certainly not what I expected
Otherwise I just like the obvious ones though Alias's The Other Side Of The Looking Glass is worth a mention, its the best Anticon release that I've heard: the production is very full and 'musical' (violins, flutes, and electronic flourishes) which are underpinned by really crisp-sounding, hard beats which you would think would be incongrous but compliment it well. Does anyone else think Fear Of A Black Planet, Apocalypse 91 and Muse Sick N Hour Mess Age (underrated!) are better than It Takes A Nation, which sounds tepid and weak (not the collage of sound that I like) and uses the same samples as loads of albums from that age (EMPD, etc)? |
the Bomb Squad produced songs for a lot of albums of that time, which affects how we see PE's ioriginiality today
nation of millions is a fucking genius sampled album. everything in it is meant to agitate. scrapes, squeals, sirens, screams, etc. No one has done it better since, partly because of the change in copyright laws after de la soul got sued it is bullshit,. I hate fucking hip hop samples where you can tell exactly what song it is from and that only samples one song so you are basically rappig over an instrumental version of a police song, or a tom tom club song. I fucking HATE that shit. |

good list, and i obviously i know mf doom=viktor vauhn |
Quote:
so because he was fat makes him a bad mc? his flow and lyrics are both unfuckwithable. prolly my favorite mc ever. made the most violent of lyrics sound soulful and nonchalant. |
Quote:
But when I listen to It Takes A Nation Of Millions, I don't hear scrapes, squeals, etc. It's got a reputation as being 'noize!' but all I hear is ordinary-sounding hiphop songs based around funk samples (apart from She Watch Channel Zero), just like EMPD, etc. Fear Of A Black Planet is the one where the songs are composed with many, many samples from all kinds of sources in a big abrasive noizy assault |
Quote:
I don't enjoy his rhymes, do not enjoy teh company he kept, do not enjoy his stupid themes, and cannot for the life f me stand the bullshit bullshit samples" his producers used. The Geto Boys would have killed that fuck with Mind of a Lunatic alone. . |
I also did not like that he used to sling crack rock. same reason I find Ice T a fucking joke, ex pimp, woman beater, asshole.
|
look at these dipshits
![]() you reap what you sow |
well im not gonna start and arguement over not liking biggie. i mean i loved his beats and i think puffy is actually way underrated as a pruducer (check the new jay z, hes tracks are the only ones good on there) despite him being on of the biggest deauche bags on the planet. but the rest of your list is pretty awesome so ill let it slide.

I also forgot one of my faves
SLICK RICK - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick |
I also forgot one of my faves: Tupac's Strictly 4 My Niggaz.
It's from the time when loads of rappers were copying Public Enemy: Ice T (on Original Gangster, which is excellent) and Ice Cube were using Bomb Squad-like producers and writing aggressively pro-Black and nihilistic lyrics. Strictly 4 My Niggaz is Tupac's contribution to this time, with the only light relief being Keep Your Head Up (everyone of his albums has a token 'from the heart' track - this one is actually good). It's in an awkward position because Tupac's fans, who prefer his Death Row bullshit, won't like the abrasive, murky, sometimes-bordering-on-industrial production (one of the songs is sampled by NIN on their cover of Metal); while the hiphop fans who would appreciate it (Public Enemy fans) probably won't listen to it because they've dismissed everything Tupac's done on the basis of his Death Row bullshit. It's an angry, uncompromising, noise-hop album, and well worth a download. |

Excellent list, I must say. Geto boys are one of my most listened to artists right now. It's interesting to see how that in all of hip hop history, they seem to be the most gangsta and that was way back in the early 90's. Quote:
. Sounds like a Dre track too, and isn't that bad, but the hook is weak. Lately I've been listening to: DPG Kurupt (Releasing a new album this year) The Game (Look out for L.A.X) Lil Wayne (Look out for Tha Carter 3) Dre (Look out for Detox) Geto Boys Three 6 Mafia Kool Keith / Ultramagnetic MC's Inspectah Deck / ODB / Rae / Ghost / Rest of Wu + Affiliates Rakim (+ Eric B) Ice Cube - Death Certificate DJ Screw E40 Slick Rick Big L Big Pun Biggie NWA The Coup Public Enemy Talib Kweli Dr. Octagon Noah23 Production Dr. Dre Just Blaze J.R. Rotem Pharrel Cool & Dre Scott Storch Dat Nigga Daz RZA Kanye |
Big Pun was twice the size of Biggie Smalls and over the course of two albums
and a gang of cameos staked his spot as one of the most amazing lyricists I've ever heard. Redman is still my favorite though. Best MC? No. But my favorite. |
Also, anyone who doesn't like DJ Premier beats, you're a lost one.
|
Most of the ones previously mentioned.
I don't see Sage Francis, so I guess that he's not liked much. Grand Buffet are a good laugh. |
My friends tour with Grand Buffet quite a bit. I hung out with them when they first started playing in the late 90's....cool dudes.
|
They played twice at a cozy bar up the road. I like the way they get up on stage with a cd walkman and burn down the house. Who are your friends, if you don't mind me asking?
|
HEIGHT and PT Burnem have played with them.....they are like "underground rap" or whatever.
|
Never heard of them. I'll check it out.
Braintax is another one that springs to mind. |
They're from Baltimore. Burnem is a friend of mine from college who is in Philly most of the time now.
|
Yeah, they mentioned Baltimore. I've got Five Years of Fireworks. Good album and funny DVD.
Ask them about De Bliksem if you ever see them. Edit: Lord Grunge got wasted on whiskey while Mr. Pennsylvania sort of meditated back stage. :D |
Oh oh oh-oh-oh oh my God you're weird....ha ha.
|
Dalek
NWA (Straight Outta Compton is one of the best albums ever) Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle Sugarhill Gang Gangmaster Flash am very interested in checking out Tribe Called Quest |
