Got any cures for excessive earwax buildup?

This winter I've been waking up with my ears clogged up. After a hot shower and being frustrated for an hour or two, they'd seem to clear up.

But the other day I just couldn't take it anymore because it happened when I was trying to sleep. So I got some earwax removal aid. (foaming drops)

So I drop them in, they foam, then I'm supposed to flush out with warm water. It seems to work a little bit, but I still have clogged up ears.

My right ear was open yesterday and my left ear was closed then I bit into dinner and boom, my right ear closes up.

Any advice before I go to the doctor? You know, like "drink plenty of hot tea," that sort of stuff?

[edit: nevermind I see you've tried the drops]

they make these crazy candle things that supposedly work.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 02.01.2008 02:09 PM

ear wax candles?

jonathan 02.01.2008 02:13 PM

q tip?

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 02:27 PM

this is deep in my ear canal, plus I could damage my cochlea

Cantankerous 02.01.2008 02:30 PM

q tips don't actually work. they push the wax in deeper.
try pouring some hydrogen peroxide in there, with your head tilted so it doesn't spill out, or you can find some place locally that does this thing called candling. look it up.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 02:35 PM

According to medical research it is both dangerous and ineffective.

Cantankerous 02.01.2008 02:35 PM

q tips or peroxide? peroxide totally works and that will not harm you.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 02:42 PM

No candling. There is peroxide in the foaming drops. Although it is not hydrogen peroxide, it is Carbamide peroxide. So I guess those 2 things could have very different properties.

Cantankerous 02.01.2008 02:45 PM

candling DOES work, i've had it done.

a few drops of olive oil works best

With the drops that is actually working a bit. But I'm still stuffed up. I guess I'm just gonna have to do it for a few days and hope it gets better.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 03:15 PM

No thanks. I don't want to go to the doctor with a punctured ear drum

drops or olive oil take a few days to work, especially if you've got quite a bit of wax

just don't go sticking anything in your ear to help it out

nicfit 02.01.2008 03:31 PM

hot steam could work??

gmku 02.01.2008 03:50 PM

Keef and Mick say try Exile on Main St. through the headphones with volume at 11. Wot?

kay...

i would clean it with my own urine.

foxforce5 02.01.2008 03:58 PM

How do you know it's just wax? Maybe it's fluid as well. There is this stuff I've used for after swimming that gets fluid out pretty well.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 04:01 PM

It is definitely a lot of wax. The drops foam when they make contact with wax, and they foam a whole hell of a lot in there.

nicfit 02.01.2008 04:20 PM

you are 100% sure you're not pouring beer in your ear, right?

ha ha.

I'm dumb today.
Yes, I said today....

Cantankerous 02.01.2008 04:21 PM

it may be foaming less than you think because the sound of it is magnified and distorted what with it actually being in your ear

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2008 07:09 PM

I figured out that placing my hand over my ear then using the suction helps to pull it out after the oil and foaming drop treatments. I can't believe how loud I was listening to music!

Everyneurotic 02.01.2008 08:03 PM

cantankerous is right, q-tips are shit; i got stuffed up really deep because of the q-tips.

i went to the doctor, they shot warm water periodically until my ears were clean; you can't do that many times in your life because your ear can get damaged, and you should do it yourself. go get yourself checked just in case it's not just wax you have up there and to get instructed.

It is already taken care of. I used suction to get the earwax out. :)
