I almost died listening to Battles!

So I was walking to the city this afternoon after school. I got out early and started walking to Broadway. I got there at about 1:30 and decided to take a shortcut through the middle of the carpark to get to the road. On the way I noticed an electricity sub station and I tried to see if I could look inside. I then continued on my walk. When I got home I found the whole thing exploded 15 minutes later and caused a massive fire. I saw the footage on the news: I wouldn't have survived.

But yeah I was listening to Tonto at the time.

✌➬ 02.12.2008 02:38 AM

I thought you had a heart-attack while listening to it.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 02:43 AM

I'd rather that then being FUCKING EXPLODED!

pbradley 02.12.2008 02:49 AM

I'm sure we can blame the Battles for this in some way.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 02:54 AM

For rocking?

SYRFox 02.12.2008 03:00 AM

For blowing the fire out of electricity stations, sure

pbradley 02.12.2008 03:01 AM

A riff bounced from your head phones and acoustically ricocheted within the structure for fifteen minutes until it finally exploded.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 03:19 AM

Haha repped

dressedindreams 02.12.2008 03:22 AM

It would've been a good death though.

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 03:25 AM

I'm only 16! I want to liiiiiive!

ZEROpumpkins 02.12.2008 04:00 AM

Nope. Thanks for thinking that though.

sarramkrop 02.12.2008 01:24 PM

After I listened to Battles, I almost died of boredom. Not even the ambulance crew that came to pick me up were sympathetic towards me.

I thought the same thing when I first saw the thread title. It's a little ambiguous. I wonder how we might re-phrase this to avoid confusion? Perhaps: I almost died in an accident while listening to Battles.

Or: While listening to Battles, I missed by several minutes being involved in a possibly fatal accident.

Or: I was listening to Battles while walking past a utility substation. If I'd hung around, I might have been caught in its explosion.

Suggestions?

gmku 02.12.2008 03:50 PM

Or: Battles was playing in my headset when I avoided a near-death experience.

sonicl 02.12.2008 03:56 PM

I once nearly died while listening to Sonic Youth. I was driving along listening to "Making The Nature Scene", and two years later a car skidded on the same piece of road. If I'd been driving along there two years after I did, that car could've hit mine and I could've died in a huge ball of fire.

I have nightmares sometimes.

gmku 02.12.2008 03:58 PM

Just think. It staggers the mind.

sonicl 02.12.2008 04:01 PM

Oh God, don't get me started about staggering. I narrowly missed staggering off a cliff once.

gmku 02.12.2008 04:11 PM

I staggered several hundred miles from a cliff once.

sonicl 02.12.2008 04:12 PM

If it had been 10,000,000 years earlier there would've been a cliff where I staggered.

I had a similar thing when I nearly got stabbed, shot and raped. If I had've been five minutes earlier to the pub on Friday, and five minutes earlier someone was in there who wanted to stab, shoot and rape someone, and I, five minutes earlier, had've gleefully shouted 'please stab, shoot and rape me' (as I rarely do), I could've been stabbed, shot and raped.

But it turns out the guy who wasn't there didn't have a gun. He also didn't have a knife or a penchant for raping, but if he was there, and liked stabbing, shooting and raping people... by god, I shudder to think.

sonicl 02.12.2008 04:22 PM

And all that could've happened in Bristol? Sweet Jesus, I went to Bristol once.

tonto is the balls.

gmku 02.12.2008 04:31 PM

In any case, ZERO, a story to tell your grandkids some day, for sure.

Yeah, this is how it is for me EVERY DAY. Somedays, I can't leave the house because it's AN ACTUAL DISTANCE from where Hiroshima happened SEVERAL YEARS AGO and then I think, 'Wait! My house is near somewhere where ACTUAL PEOPLE died AT SOME POINT!!!

It's hard, y'know? Hard.

I am actually quite near where that old fella was dead on the couch for ages, as it happens.

sonicl 02.12.2008 04:37 PM

My heart goes out to you, man.

Glice 02.12.2008 04:38 PM

Thanks, man.

Glice 02.12.2008 04:40 PM

For no decent reason I find these things hilarious.

gmku 02.12.2008 04:42 PM

Hey, there's blood in the soil across this great land. Revolutionary war, civil war, genocide of the Native American, lynchings, drive-by shootings. There's probably not a square mile of U.S. turf where people have not died some horrible death.

sonicl 02.12.2008 04:46 PM

Quit trying to lighten things up, man, this are serious.

I like this one, though if I avoided a near death experience, wouldn't I have died?

Cantankerous 02.13.2008 01:32 AM

sue the bastards.
gmku, sorry to inform you: just because you're an old geezer and you've been around the block 84 times or however old you are DOES not mean you've become witty or clever in the process.
