what was the first band/artist that you liked?

i would have to go with the composer of the original nintendo music. but the first band i ever liked was green day. i will forever be in debt to them for getting me into punk rock and just music in general that wasn't the zelda theme song. i still listen to dookie once a year. i really think if i didn't listen to green day at that age, i wouldn't be listening to black flag or discharge at this age.

floatingslowly 03.01.2008 09:23 PM

either Thompson Twins or Oingo Boingo. hard call.

although...The Carpenters' Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft was my first favorite song.

true story.

Nirvana. Yeah I was a depressive little twit.

Cantankerous 03.01.2008 09:25 PM

the spice girls i liked a lot as a child. which i look back on and find funny, because my mom was always playing cool music.

Savage Clone 03.01.2008 09:30 PM

The earliest band I remember really loving was the Monkees. I was 3 or 4.
I also liked Donovan a lot and the Moody Blues' albums "In Search Of The Lost Chord" and "On The Threshold Of A Dream" figured prominently in my childhood's soundtrack. This was 1973-76ish.

✌➬ 03.01.2008 09:31 PM

I think so too, but I got into them, 8 years after he blew his brains out.

Savage Clone 03.01.2008 09:31 PM

As far as fanboy fandom goes, it was Joan Jett and Devo, 81-82.

krastian 03.01.2008 09:32 PM

The first band I ever identified as a band that I liked were The Beach Boys.....I was 4 or 5.

pbradley 03.01.2008 09:35 PM

Led Zeppelin. Then Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins.

I always resented Green Day.

Death & the Maiden 03.01.2008 09:39 PM

Robbie Williams - my first album was Escapology.
The Caesars - began my fascination with more obscure stuff.
The Ramones - if I hadn't discovered the Ramones, I wouldn't have discovered any band I liked since (except The Smiths, who I heard on the radio).

Led Zeppelin

I got into pretty heavy around 8th grade. They changed my whole outlook on music and life in general. I became the "go-to guy" for people who wanted to talk about music. I stopped listening to Zeppelin heavily around my sophomore year when I got into punk rock and Sonic Youth, but I've been listening to them more recently. Jimmy Page was the reason I picked up the guitar and the reason that I bought a Telecaster when everyone was telling me to get the Strat. Because Jimmy did so much and got such sound of his Tele.

pbradley 03.01.2008 11:32 PM

This makes me want to talk about my musical journey.

The first song I remember liking was 1995's Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2. Sure I was only ten and it was a promo song for Batman Forever, but that song rocks. Ha ha, I had the single on cassette. Anyways, I got into Led Zeppelin shortly after that and was into them throughout middle school. 8th grade I got into Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins mostly from my older brother (a trend in my early music interests). By freshmen or sophomore year of high school, I got into Radiohead and was all into them for a long while. Then senior year came around and my brother came back from his first year in college with Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr, Joy Division, etc. and needless to say I was blown away and am still being blown away since.

Cantankerous 03.01.2008 11:37 PM

the first GOOD music that i seriously liked was stuff like led zeppelin and the rolling stones, hendrix etc.

HaydenAsche 03.01.2008 11:40 PM

Nirvana and punk music when I was like 7-8.

Cantankerous 03.01.2008 11:41 PM

StevOK 03.01.2008 11:48 PM

Ha. That's why I liked most punk bands. I'd see a picture of someone looking all punk and then they'd be my favorite band before I'd even heard them.

LittlePuppetBoy 03.02.2008 01:07 AM

Smashing Pumpkins

Phlegmscope 03.02.2008 07:30 AM

The Stones, Dire Straits and Iggy. Of course I was too young (around 5-6) to acknowledge who they were.

k-krack 03.02.2008 12:19 PM

KISS when I was maybe 7 or 8... thanks to my best friend and his dad.

Rob Instigator 03.03.2008 11:13 AM

The very first band I got into heavy was Def Leppard

I had On Through The Night and Pyromania when I was 9-10
I listened to them endlessly

them and Quiet Riot. (This was 1982-83)

gmku 03.03.2008 11:45 AM

The Mickey Mouse Club kids, circa 1958. "M I C--see you real soon... K E Y--why? Because we like you..."

Savage Clone 03.03.2008 02:39 PM

I remember Monkees from age 4. I made my mom give me a Davey Jones hairdo when I was 5.

Savage Clone 03.03.2008 02:45 PM

I would have been the coolest pre-schooler ever.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 03.03.2008 05:39 PM

gritty nitty dirt band

SuperCreep 03.03.2008 06:03 PM

Simon & Garfunkel.

I watched The Concert in Central Park at my grandma's house when I was five. It was the first time I actually started to garner an appreciation for music outside of Row Row Row Your Boat or whatever I was listening to at the time. Then when I was seven or eight, I took their '72 Greatest Hits CD from my mom's collection and pretty much played the fuck out of that for the rest of my youth. I only started getting their actual albums about two years ago. Still one of my favorite bands ever.

Disgruntled Youth 03.03.2008 06:58 PM

Ok I'll fucking admit this I was 4 years old in Venezuela 1979 & I was listening to Menudo but that shit finished once I moved to New York & started listening to The Treacherous 3 & Rapping Duke...

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 03.03.2008 07:33 PM

That's what I listened to as a little kid.
