our is already 8.375 and they want to raise it a cent to remodel an arena that was just built in hopes to get the sonics.

nearly 10 cents on the dollar seems really fucking high to me.

anyway.. what's yours?

so sales tax is 5 cents on the dollar? but 7 cents for food? (and obviously higher for hotels..)

state tax is something different than sales tax.

it varies from county to county & cities as well, from a little over 5% to 8%

in albuquerque it's currently 6.875%

but it's not really a sales tax-- it's a "gross receipts tax" that the business must pay (stupid, i know), but it usually gets billed to the buyer.

here. amuse yourself.

girlgun 03.04.2008 04:15 PM

okay. They arent raising it. They are wanting to extend the previous one cent increase which expires this year for the above mentioned purpose.

Sonic Youth 37 03.04.2008 04:17 PM

9.75% sales. Blows, blows, blows.

The great state of Tennessee. Only that it's really not great, it's horrible.

Ok, so, they changed it at the first of the year. 5.5% on food, 7% on everything else. Plus, the individual counties can charge up the 2.75% more if they choose, which most do.

Savage Clone 03.04.2008 04:29 PM

7.5%.
Raising taxes so filthy rich sports fucks can have stadiums that they don't have to pay for themselves can eat it.
We've had plenty of that shit around here.

Rob Instigator 03.04.2008 04:31 PM

Texas has no taxes on food items.

girlgun, can you post a picture of yourself paying some sort of tax?

Glice 03.04.2008 04:43 PM

Repeal the corn laws, I says.

Incidentally, I have been saying that about twice a day for the last week. It's my latest 'thing Glice says that makes Glice and Glice only laugh', following 'haven't we?' as a non-meaningful interjection.

Haha. Give me 24 hours?

Rob Instigator 03.04.2008 04:50 PM

I ahte the corn subsidy

Monsanto/ADM has over the past 15 years bought out nearly every single independent corn farmer and once they did that, and only then, did they pay their cronies in washington to make it a federally amndated law that all gasoline contain 15% ethanol, which comes (for now) mainly from corn, which Monsanto/ADM own a near monopoly on

ethanol can be made much more efficiently from many other different vegetables, because corn has not that much sugar and is hard to process, but monsanto has made everyone believe that ethanol (which is basically just alcohol/drinking alcohol/grain alcohol) can only be made from corn.

ethanol is better gotten from sugar, sugar cane, sugar beets, etc.

try living in europe.... 10 cents on the dollar will be a bargain then.

no sales tax here but value added tax, which can be - for holland - either 6% (food and basic goods) or 19% ("luxury" goods; meaning pretty much every product not strictly necessary for survival).
