Do you have any phobias?

I'm not talking like snakes, heights, or spiders. I'm talking like weird completely irrational shit that is debilitating.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 01:36 AM

i have an intense (no exaggeration) fear of breaking or otherwise injuring my nose, which includes any kind of surgical procedure involving my nose. i recoil at the thought.
also i'm terrified of birds.

m1rr0r dash 03.16.2008 01:36 AM

not that weird ... but i have had some pretty debilitating claustrophobia a couple of times while caving, and once when i was in the MRI machine.

pbradley 03.16.2008 01:37 AM

Sometimes I have anxiety pangs when I'm crossing at a cross walk and a car next to me is crawling to a stop.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 01:40 AM

You mean like her?

Or her?

✌➬ 03.16.2008 01:41 AM

This might be schizophrenia, but I am terribly afraid someone following me while driving at night. I always think the cars behind me are following me.

I get claustrophobia, vertigo..

I have a fear of dirtyness but its odd because I also really like being outside in nature.. nature isnt dirty. humans are dirty.

I cant think of any irrational ones though : /

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 01:45 AM

i won't go to the beach in england or ireland anymore because i'm too afraid of all the seagulls.

have you read dead babies by martin amis? one of the characters has something like this about his teeth, but way worse...

"Away from the drill!"
"What? I say, Giles, are you all right?"
Giles had been lynig on his bed, bent double with psychosomatic toothache. His stragled shout had been a semi-delerious reply to Quentin's courtly knock. By 12:30, Giles had consumed five Gin Rickeys, four gin and tonics, three gin and its, two gin and bitters, and one gin.

throughout the book theres a running joke about how bad his phobia is... he has a medicine cabinet full of dentist's picks of various shapes and sizes and cleans his teeth in front of a porcelain sink entirely covered in foam padding... at one point another character is commenting on a chick she thinks has a too-perfect centrfold body and an average to unattractive face. Giles says "i actually thought she had really nice..." and hesitates. she says, "oh. Giles...." and he mutters "...teeth, actually"

ahaha
i don't care about the appearance of my nose being fucked up from injuries i just cannot STAND the thought of injuring (spec. breaking) my nose. if i think about intensely it or if i actually hurt myself i will start stamping my feet and flailing my arms, literally i can't take it.

ZEROpumpkins 03.16.2008 01:49 AM

Agoraphobia, Fear of heights, Claustrophobia.

pbradley 03.16.2008 01:49 AM

Giving me a pat on the shoulder or whatever when I'm not expecting it will startle me. People that do this then give me a weird expression when I react. Fuck them.

Last time I drove a car it was a near head on collision turning out of my driveway 4 years ago.

no, just imagining a snap will make me cringe a little but if i imagine it in detail i'll start with the flailing.

OH GOD THE WIIMOTE NO. it's going to happen someday.

HAHAHA. No, I get all paranoid about this. This might sound dumb, but I am afraid of the dark, but can only sleep when the lights are out, and any light bugs me.

I'm not psychiatrist, but that sounds like schizophrenia

that one symptom alone is by no means suggestive of schizophrenia. schizophrenia is an extremely complex mental illness that requires diagnosis by a professional.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 01:58 AM

I am afraid of other people touching me. I feel they are going to hit me.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 02:00 AM

that would be indicative of childhood trauma.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:01 AM

Probably, I was bullied by my brothers. They would always hit me.

yadayadayada I know. I'm just saying, my sister has a friend who's schizo who constantly believes she's being followed.

But she's got other symptoms.

she probably has paranoid schizophrenia. there's other types though. it's a pretty interesting illness.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:11 AM

I am also afraid of growing old, but I can't stop that.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 02:14 AM

i thought of one. an irrational, stupid one. there's probably a medical term for it.

i'm very afraid of speaking with people i don't know or don't know well. i will go out of my way to avoid having a conversation with someone i don't know on the street or at a party/event and i keep my head down and walk quickly. i keep my headphones on when i'm on the subway (unless i'm with someone i DO know in which case i'll be happy to talk with them), i don't talk to cab drivers, etc etc. really, i can't do it.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:15 AM

Isn't that being anti-social?

edit- because I am like that too.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 02:17 AM

no. antisocial personality disorder is characterized by the following:
disregard for others emotions
irresponsibility
view of others as a tool for one's personal gain
possible compulsive lying

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:18 AM

Oh okay, because I refuse to talk to people mostly because they bore me to dead after five minutes. Then I am wondering why did I even bother.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 02:19 AM

i'm not antisocial at all, but i am extremely introverted and shy around people who i don't know personally.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:21 AM

I see, most would say you are anti-social, just because you are shy. I am on the brink of giving up of trying to be sociable.

Cantankerous 03.16.2008 02:23 AM

because people don't actually know what antisocial behaviour is. they think it's actually avoiding social situations, which is not the case. just like people think schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder are the same thing. they're not.
but yes, most people think i'm some kind of horrible self involved bitch when i'm actually afraid to say anything to them.

✌➬ 03.16.2008 02:26 AM

Yes, people always say I am rude when I don't speak to them. The most I get from people is that I am weird, for liking different things. But yeah they always say I have anti-social behavior which isn't true, I am just not interested in talking to them.

i was scared of the dark to the extreme as a child of 4 or 5.. a lot of kids are, but it was pretty extreme for me for a while. my bed time routine consisted of pulling back the blankets on my bed just right for quick entry and then going over to to the light switch with my arm stretched out so i was as close to bed as possible. i would flip the switch and sprint the 10 feet to my bed and dive for it, in one fluid motion pulling the blankets up to my chin. i was convinced they would protect me from whatever was out there... i never carried around a security blanket or anything.... but if there was a storm at night i had to keep telling myself that the force field of the blankets extended over my face with the magical help of the pillow under my head.

i guess more of a silly superstition a young child would dream up than a real phobia.....
