ZEROpumpkins 03.27.2008 06:19 AM

Albums that consist completely or almost entirely of songs of equal excellence

Basically the same as 100 other threads with a different title. Regardless:
Loveless
Weezers first album (Shamless pop fun)
OK Computer
The Bends
Disco Volante
Hit To Death In The Future Head (Bonus Track doesn't count)
Bee Thousand
Alien Lanes
Doolittle
Different Class
Dig Your Own Hole
Prodigy's first two albums

SYRFox 03.27.2008 06:42 AM

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Fall - Grotesque
Mogwai - Young Team
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - All the albums
Double Leopards - Halve Maen
Boards Of Canada - All the albums too

Basically any album by artists that focus on atmosphere (drone/ambient, electronica, post-rock and all that) more than actual songs.

screamingskull 03.27.2008 06:49 AM

At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Elliott Smith - Either/Or, Roman Candle
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
Joni Mitchell - Hejira, Blue, The Hissing of Summer Lawns

SYRFox 03.27.2008 07:13 AM

Gang Gang Dance - God's Money
Liars - They Were Wrong, So We Drowned
!!! - Louden Up Now

ALIEN ANAL 03.27.2008 08:00 AM

i love all of bleach

atsonicpark 03.27.2008 08:20 AM

This thread is difficult. Even albums I LOVE have songs I don't think are as great as other songs on the album... I agree with some of your guys's picks (Doolittle, Grotesque) but I disagree with most (OK Computer, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned!!!!). So, uhhh... I'm going to respond to this very cautiously...

Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Q And Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep
Theory of Ruin - Counter Culture Nosebleed

Are albums where I PRETTY MUCH think every song is of equal excellence (I could cheat and say things like Stars of the Lid or something but I'm not going to). I sat on this thread for 10 minutes, trying to think of more and I couldn't. You stumped me!

_slavo_ 03.27.2008 08:21 AM

Slint - Spiderland

Torn Curtain 03.27.2008 08:31 AM

Albums where I like all the songs on a same (or very near same) level are far and few between.

The Notwist - Shrink / Neon golden
U2 - The Joshua tree

nicfit 03.27.2008 08:33 AM

blonde redhead - fake can be jus as good
mono - under the pipal tree
massive attack - mezzanine
nearly god - S/t
ulan bator - vegetale
erase errata - other animals
sonic youth - evol
the black heart procession - three
P.U.S.A. - II
velvet underground & nico

these are all albums with all great songs, even if they include (quite obviously) some which are "more favourite" in a way...

atsonicpark 03.27.2008 08:35 AM

See, as much as I like "other animals", there are like 2 guitar noise only tracks and a filler track or two, so that seems to contradict the purpose of this thread. Unless, of course, you find those of equal excellence and listenability as "Fault List"... to each their own.

Also, I could have listed stuff like Boris - Flood, but that's cheating since it's one big song ...

I recently realised that it's my favorite Blonde Redhead record (I used to prefer Misery is a butterfly but it doesn't age very well), and I would agree if I could stand In particular (I don't why but I hate that song).

You're probably right, actually. I do love the "flow" of the record, but a couple spots are a bit lacking...

viewtiful_alan 03.27.2008 08:39 AM

Revolver by The Beatles (this would be any other band's gretest hits, and it would be an amazing greatest hits at that)

Freak Out by Frank Zappa (just behind Daydream Nation for my favorite album of all time)

Ramones debut LP (say what you will about them, I have always been a huge fan, and this album is brilliant from beginning to end)

Bringing It all back home by Bob Dylan (while one or two of the songs might not be as lyrically amazing as some of the others, I'd say it is a consistently good album.)

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars by David Bowie (fucking fantastic)

Electric Warrior by T.Rex (Consistent level of goodness throughout)

This does not necessarily equate to my favorite albums although some of them are favorites. Daydream would be there but someone else mentioned it already.. and providence is scignificantly not as good as the rest of the album.

And no, not everything I listen to is this mainstream, these are just the albums I think meet the specification XD

batreleaser 03.27.2008 11:35 AM

well actually fun house's first side is infinitley better than the second so that doesnt count, and white light white heat has sister ray so that doesnt count either, this is hard.

king_buzzo 03.27.2008 11:38 AM

Sorry, mr pumpkins, I recently bought this album and I didn't find it fun. Which song do you find excellent ?
I'd replace this one by Sister. A good album from the beginning till the end.

i think that a lot of the great funk records are perfect the whole way through, i mean the whole think with funk was flow, and some of those records flowed perfectly.

some of my favorite funk/soul records that i consider totally perfect are:
sly stone-theres a riot goin on
james brown-the payback/sing it loud, im black and im proud
parliament-maggot brain
curtis mayfield-superfly soundtrack
stevie wonder-innervisions

i love a lot of funk music, the record that really got me into it was oddly enough hendrix's band of gypsies. i first heard that record when i was 14 and it made me wanna play guitar and established me as a life long jimi fanatic, and also id read a lot about it being inspired by a lotta the aforementioned funk artists. funks great because it can simultaneously be psychedelic, radical, fun/danceable, and musically significant when its at its best.

batreleaser 03.27.2008 02:22 PM

spacemen 3-perfect prescritpion is perfect the whole way through, flaming lips have a couple ablums with 0 bad songs (transmissions from the sattelite heart, the soft bulletin).

bad brains-roir cassette is perfect, mdc-millions of dead cops is perfect.

cryptoposy's ...and then youll beg

i love this thread, its made me pull out a lotta records i havnt listened to in ages.
