john dwyer...

damn this cat's been in a lotta good bands. coachwhips, burmese, pink and brown, the ohshees, zeigenbock kopf, the hospitals, and of course, landed.

so, i was wondering what people think about this dude. a great talent? or just a guy who plays in a lotta good bands?

i might be biased, but judging from his resume, and his solo work in the ohshees, i gotta say this dude is a hell of a musician. landed is one of the best american noise rock bands of all time (and one of my favorite bands), coachwhips's spastic noise punk was great, zeigenbock kopf is hilarious, and burmese is one of the best bands ive heard of recent times.

however, this dude should probably just have stuck with a few bands instead of countless. i mean, hospitals sounds exactly the same to me coachwhips, and seemed pointless. but anyways, dude's got a hell of a resume.

atsonicpark 03.28.2008 07:07 PM

I've never heard ohshees or zeigenbock kopf but all the rest are excellent.Oddly, I'm not a HUGE hospitals fan, though I count Coachwhips amongst my favorite bands. ALL HANDS ON THE FUCKING CONTROLS NOW.But anyway.. sure, great musician.

batreleaser 03.28.2008 09:50 PM

ohshhes is dwyer's solo project of just home lo fi recordings but eventually turned into a full band

zeigenbock komf is descirbed as a faux gay german electro industrial noise idm band, haha, theyre more of a joke band than anything.

landed is defintley my fave outta them. ive seen them play live a few times too, fucking amazing every time.

ocs was actually the solo thing, Oh-sees is a trio, sometimes a quartet. I like Get your Hands on the Controls, particularly Wheelchair!

Count Mecha 04.07.2010 02:23 AM

atsonicpark 04.08.2010 12:03 PM

That must've been a while back and a few incarnations and styles ago. You should definitely see them again for the first time. Thee Oh Sees are just absolutely godly live whether they play up to the crowd's excitement at more of a punk-vibe show, or vibe out in a more psychedelic way at a more West Coasty float-with-the-breeze-kinda show.

Where to start recordings-wise?? That's not so easy, really. The discography is dizzying and ranges through a lotta styles. Many of the records sold out before they were ever shipped. So, it might be best to just suggest picking up whichever one's available conveniently enough. The Master's Bedroom... is probably the consensus pick for starter suggestions, though. The Zork's Tape Bruise singles collection LP plus bonus CD of even more stuff would also suit that purpose fine. Long-time fans who were spoiled by the consistently upward trajectory of the quality of songwriting and brilliance of the production and arrangement and perfect mental zoning of the recording session were sorta disappointed by last year's Help. But that's still a fine album, albeit more of a "rock" record. Of course, certain moments of it are worthy of the loftiest praise, such as the sublime panflute solo that plays out the end of "Meat Step Lively".

If you think that Thee Oh Sees are not Dwyer's best band of his life so far, you are not looking at it objectively. You can have nostalgia for earlier projects because they all gave great live performances (you really can expect nothing less from him ever) and they all have some merit on record as well, but they were all much more single-track-minded, and all examples of doing what comes easy for a young fellow who was living from one party to the next. Oh Sees at their best are an outstanding synergy of spontaneity and exquisite craft.

I like coachwhips and burmese, haven't heard the other listed bands.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.19.2010 03:14 PM

The more I've listened to his stuff the more I relate to the type of effects he uses and identify with.

Does anyone know what the hell he uses though? Like specifically what kind of reverb/delay on the vocals and guitar effects?

I've been doing that kind of sound half-assed (at the sound guys' mercy) for 4 years now. I suppose its time I get serious about it.

Im just curious as to what effects he uses to make the live show so good, do any of you have any ideas? Can't seem to find it anywhere...

DJ Rick 10.20.2010 06:23 PM

The live set-up's nothing outta the ordinary, I don't think. He used to wield some unusual vintage mics at live shows, but lately, I've only observed the cheapest and most ubiquitous mics at house-shows and DIY spaces across the land.

Certainly, Dwyer's rarely ever at the mercy of a soundman, though....They usually set up on the floor somewhere and play through their own self-contained P.A. and amps that are stacked behind the drummer.

Next time you have the chance, just wriggle your way to the front and have a look-see.

In the studio, some unusually creativity is more likely to be deployed. That has a lot to do with Woodhouse. You can read about some of the unique touches he put on the new Males LP by The Intelligence here...

atsonicpark 10.20.2010 08:24 PM

What band are you referring to, Dildo? Most of his stuff sounds like basic supertrebly guitar distortion, and his vocals are run through a telephone receiver or a guitar practice amp (both make the same sound), not unlike the guy from Japanther (I record nearly all my vocals through a telephone too; love that sound). In the Oh sees, sounds like he's using Fender Reverb sometimes. Anyway, usually sounds no-frills and simple, which is part of the appeal. Get in, set up quickly, rock out, and get out...

Man, BANGERS VERSUS FUCKERS is one of the loudest albums ever, isn't it? In the red. Also, a masterpiece.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.21.2010 01:38 PM

I found out some stuff just by trying to find every youtube video i could.

Seems like he uses green bullet mics in the early oh sees days, but lately just using sm57s (which i have) and basically swallowing them.

On guitar he's using some kind of delay, mixed with reverb. He also uses the burns 12 string electric guitar on some songs, and on other songs something that resembles a vintage gibson rip off, but im not sure exactly what guitar it is.

I was just wondering because at certain shows i've seen it's like he just walks up to his amp and it starts doing weird delay...i never see him tweaking knobs or anything or stepping on pedals, though now and then I do see him step on some pedals.

its just weird, i like the whole idea behind effects happening like you're conjuring them, rather than being a scientist about it.

Just didnt know if any of yall knew some tricks.

I'm gonna get the berringer vd400 analog delay pedal. i know its shitty berringer but its $26!!!!!!! my buddy who uses tons of awesome vintage equipment and who has tons of delays, space echos, etc etc said its the one he uses live...and you can get some of the sounds they are doing on it..

I'll get one for guitar and one for vocals.

atsonicpark 10.21.2010 01:52 PM

I use a behringer amop with 100 built in effects sometimes. Pretty fun. I mainly just use a fender amp and a fender guitar and that's it. Played SOMEWHAT distorted. I sing through a telephone. That's about it. I don't really like effects at all.

Behrinher is fucking awesome. So cheap and I've had the same amp for 6 years and have played it hundreds of hours and a hundred shows and never had a single problem with it. Was $200, the same amp size and style form Fender would be a couple grand.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.21.2010 02:38 PM

ya thats why im posting on here, I've never fucked with effects really, ever.

When i started my band i wanted it as dry as possible so i wouldnt rely on anything but our songwriting and ideas and skills..

but now I think its safe to fuck around with some effects, really just delay and reverb.

eventually id love to get a leslie for my vocals, thinkin about the hughs and kettner rotosphere but its like $550.

atsonicpark 10.21.2010 03:52 PM

Delay is cool. On my albums, I use digital delay, I also like to play a riff and then play the same riff slightly pitched up or down; makes for some cool walls of guitar..

I finger tap a lot which can kinda get lost in live setting.. gotta use a compressor... too distorted, it gets muddy.. too clean, it just ets lost...

loubarret 10.23.2010 04:51 AM

Delay is one of the coolest effects ever in mine book, even more when you also use rev-b over it.

Hazy shit.

ilduclo 10.23.2010 09:33 AM

some of the reverb sound he gets is from using 12 string.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.23.2010 09:38 AM

Ew digital delay though, I really only like analog delay. Heavy slapback, with reverb. mmm

So ilduclo, the reverb from the 12 string, do you mean like just from the sounds the extra strings bring? Like natural acoustics in the guitar? or just combining it?

I saw that 12 string he plays, it actually looks fucking awesome, I was thinking of saving up for one. It's only lke $900, about the same price as my current guitar...

its a burns 12 string, dark green, looks sludgy and monster-like...I love it.

ilduclo 10.23.2010 12:14 PM

not being a guitarist, I'm not sure, I know there's a lot of diff when he switches from the 12 to the 6.
