Post Some Internet Radio Stations

I tend to try different ones out while I'm at work, since I mostly listen to the albums I've got when I'm at home. So, post some stations you dig, so I can benefit from your impeccable musical taste.

I was down with Soma FM - Indie pop for a little while, but they get repetitive and, well, too poppy. However, another one of Soma's stations, Secret Agent, is pretty good. Plays some great jazz. Both of these can be found at http://www.somafm.com

Another one that's hit or miss, but mostly good, is http://www.woxy.com

Not a live station but all the songs are archived (all songs playable).

Check it out.

(that link is to my favorite playlist right now. just find archives on the left hand side for many many many more playlists)

www.wcsb.org - i think it's one of the best radio stations which you can hear on the Internet, they play every type of music from indie-rock, noise, jazz, folk to some freakout experiments, highly reccomended;
www.wfmu.org is also worth checking out

I know a few:

For a station that'll play Sonic Youth and stuff (email a request!), try out KEXP. They have excellent archived half-hour shows too, which comprise of interviews with a band and tracks played live in the studio. Need I say the Sonic Youth one is good?

If you like a bit of crazy hard DJ techno stylee, how about Samurai fm of Tokyo?

For New Orleans jazz and blues, there's the one and only WWOZ. A good bunch of people at this station, so check them out.

I've just put this on the shortwave radio thread, but here it is again: for serious spoken-word broadcasting from around the world, check out some of the stations at World Radio Network 1.

schizophrenicroom 03.23.2006 06:42 PM

Yeah, I listen to that on occasion too, great station.

I used to work at my university's radio station, and I'll never forget what a pain in the ass it was to wade through all the demos people submitted. You found diamonds in the rough on occasion, but man, was there a lot of shit. So to those who rake through the musical dungpile for our listening pleasure, I salute you.

WRCT is free form college radio from Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh. They have an mp3 and ogg stream. www.wrct.org

luxinterior 06.25.2006 01:32 AM

St. Louis community radio - http://www.kdhx.org

You can listen online and all of that stuff, I think. If you click on that link, there should be a button that says "Program Schedule" or something of the sort. Go to that. Each program is usually two hours long. Most of the rock-oriented programs will mention specific subgenres of rock, but only a few of them actually abide by that.

darthblav 06.26.2006 12:18 PM

in milwaukee, you can't beat it:
www.wmse.org

kind of bland station, that i have to listen to at work, but it does play some decent songs and you can upload songs to be on the playlist.
http://www.radioparadise.com/modules.php?name=Playlist

i am also fans of both kcrw, kexp and woxy.

DJ Rick 07.04.2006 11:20 PM

Thanks, Hayden, for the recommendation!

Others can listen from links within my blog below. Or keep watching the "Vinyl Archaeology" thread which I post to weekly with each new program. You have 70 days from the date of the program to download mp3s of the shows.

Here's my listening menu for internet radio...

Most weeks...

On KDVS...
Fuzzbox Flynn "Coexistance of Disparate Elements"
Flower Vato "Tripping With the Flower Vato"
Klinger "Live in the Warzone"
Tim Matranga "Kicksville 29 B.C."
Scott S "Rebel Kind"
& others

On WFMU...
Liz Berg
Brian Turner
Tony Rettman
& others

Time permitting...
"Psychoacoustic Soundclash" by Nozmo King on KFJC
"Breakthrough" by Jacob Heule on KUSF
"Giants of Jazz" on WPRB

Sometimes...
live bands on KBOO when there's a good one

WFMU and KDVS both have archived streams. If you wanna plumb the depths of the latter, email me for a secret portal...;)

To merely be better than commercial radio is not very difficult. To do great radio takes courage and tons of commitment, which I find lacking at KEXP, WOXY, and KCRW. I find their tastes very "catholic" (with a small "c") and programs rather predictable. For people who need predictable, I guess that's good. I like to talk shit...sorry!
