NHL playoffs

I'm excited. I predict the finals will either be the Wings, Sharks, or Ducks against the Penguins.

Lurker 04.03.2008 07:18 PM

No way man! It's gonna be the gazelles and the badgers!

uhler 04.03.2008 07:22 PM

are the lightening in the playoffs? i haven't payed much attention to anything lately.

Lurker 04.03.2008 07:25 PM

Man-U are the bookies favourite.

No. They're last in the conference. They traded for a better goaltender though and alieved their salary structure a bit, so they should be good again soon.

pantophobia 04.04.2008 12:43 AM

Jennthebenn and I are heading to the final Capitals game on Saturday, hoping they get atleast an 8 seed, maybe luck out and get the 3 seed if Carolina falters, hottest team in the league and has the best player in the league in Alex Ovechkin who has now scored 65 goals on the year

I think Pittsburgh is a great team, and the Hossa deal is turning out well for them, but i just don't think they are ready enough for the cup this year, I think right now Montreal is too strong a unit and Carey Price has stepped up in net while my Caps have benefited from getting Huet

my thought is the Sharks (who have been just blazing hot lately) vs Montreal in the finals

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.04.2008 01:09 AM

I don't think Montreal is going to make it past the 1st round. Price is unproven and they aren't as deep as other teams. They've got a good coach and they've played well this season, but I just don't see them making the finals.

The Pens are totally ready. They've struggled with tons of injuries this season and they are number 1 in the East right now.

Going into the playoffs they'll be totally healthy and ready to kick butt. There defense has really been solid as of late and they are really starting to show themselves as an offensive juggernaut. They had 3 seven goal games in March, all of which without Crosby, and 2 of which without Hossa.

The Pens have more firepower than any other team in the league, their defense has solidified this year with the additions of Letang and Gill and the improved play of Scuderi, Gonchar, and Orpik, and Fleury is a phenomenal goalie, and a solid backup goalie in Conklin.

jennthebenn 04.04.2008 11:42 AM

San Jose will represent the West, either Montreal or Pittsburgh from the
East. If the Caps make it as the number 8 in the East, likely they would
face the Pens, which is undesirable for a number of reasons, namely the
level the Pens are playing at and the convergence of black-and-gold supporters that will befoul the air at Verizon Center. After several years of
non-stop suckage, however, a playoff appearance period would be a
fantastic achievement.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.04.2008 11:55 AM

I'll be happy if the Caps make the playoffs. If the Flyers lose tonight all they'll have to do is win their last game.

But against the Pens, they'll send either Orpik and Gonchar or Scuderi and Gill out against Ovechkin, and they'll be able to shut him down. The Capitals defense isn't good enough to shut down Malkin, Crosby, Hossa, Sykora, and Malone. And if they somehow do, the Pens still have a pretty good 3rd line in Roberts-Staal-Kennedy.

looking glass spectacle 04.04.2008 03:48 PM

i'm not really a huge sports person, but i like watching devils hockey.

jennthebenn 04.06.2008 12:14 AM

Well...yeah. That was the greatest sporting event I've ever attended,
and makes me rather glad I have a blog.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS, SOUTHEAST DIVISION CHAMPIONS.

Unbelievable. Pantophobia and I were in Section 100, directly behind
the Cap bench...his mom taped it and said we were pretty prominent
in the broadcast. I hope somewhere someone saw Pantos' red
Sleater-Kinney shirt and felt a twinge of pride.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.06.2008 12:19 AM

i'm glad that the Caps got in, and I'm glad they aren't playing the Penguins so I don't immediately have to root against them ;)

krastian 04.06.2008 09:37 PM

You see, when it comes to hockey, I really have no clue about predictions. The Caps have sucked since I was in like high school, so I haven't been paying much attention.

But the Caps were my fucking TEAM back in the Bondra days.....that's why the Penguins make me puke;)

Imagine if Crosby would have fell to the Caps??! I was watching that Draft Lottery a few years back with my fingers crossed. That goal he add the other night between his legs was rediculous, I have to say.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.06.2008 10:11 PM

I feel no ill-will towards the Caps because the Pens usually beat them in the playoffs :)

krastian 04.06.2008 10:20 PM

That's-a-why-I hate them:(

jennthebenn 04.07.2008 01:26 AM

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.07.2008 10:26 AM

I think Montreal took a huge gamble betting on their rookie goaltender, and they're not going deep.

jennthebenn 04.07.2008 01:06 PM

My anti-Pens, pro-Habs bias may wreak havoc on my predictions, however I
can't resist a Habitants team with a 100+ point season. Wonder how much
they'll come to regret getting rid of Huet.

pantophobia 04.07.2008 06:49 PM

i now regret not taking a sign that said "The Caps are Indie Rock" sign:rolleyes:

my picks
Quarters
1 Montreal Canadiens Vs 8 Boston Bruins- Montreal in 5
2 Pittsburgh Penguins Vs 7 Ottawa Senators- Pittsburgh in 4 (sorry Emmah, another year of complaining sens fans)
3 Washington Capitals Vs 6 Philadelphia Flyers- Washington in 6
4 New Jersey Devils vs 5 New York Rangers- Rangers in 6
1 Detroit Red Wings vs 8 Nashville Predators- Red Wings in 5
2 San Jose Sharks vs 7 Calgary Flames- San Jose in 6
3 Minnesota Wild vs 6 Colorado Avalanche- Colorado in 6
4 Anaheim Ducks vs 5 Dallas Stars- Anaheim in 7

Semis
1 Montreal vs 5 NYR- Montreal in 4
2 Pittsburgh vs 3 Washington- Washington in 6 (i really think this Caps team with Huet can finally match them)
1 Detroit vs 6 Colorado- Colorado in 7 (in a massive upset)
2 San Jose vs 4 Anaheim - San Jose in 5

Finals
1 Montreal vs 3 Washington- Montreal in 5
2 San Jose vs 6 Colorado- San Jose in 5

Stanley Cup
Montreal vs San Jose- San Jose in 7

thinking for the 4th cup in a row an expansion team to non traditional market will beat another Canadian team

krastian 04.07.2008 08:41 PM

All hail Coach Boudreau!!! SERIOUSLY!!

I'm liking those picks in the semis, Patrick:D

Nice blog entry, Jenn. Loved the Large Marge reference and all the pics!! Must have been a blast.

As much as I love Kovalev, I just don't think he can lead a team to the Cup Finals. In 2000-2001 when he had his best career season, Mario was back, Jagr had one of his best seasons, Lang and Straka had great seasons, and they had a hot rookie goaltender in Johan Hedberg they couldn't make the finals.

The Canadiens best weapon is their powerplay. If they play a disciplined team like the Rangers or the Devils, they just won't get a lot of opportunities and they will have to rely solely on their defense and Carey Price.

If they play the Penguins, the Pens depth is going to kill them.

pantophobia 04.09.2008 04:53 PM

starts tonight, should be a good slate

my vid from the final minute of the caps game

mvi_0439.avi - 61.67MB

krastian 04.09.2008 04:59 PM

I'll be peeking in during baseball commercials.

Waiting for your Caps vid to load.......

jennthebenn 04.09.2008 05:03 PM

Pardon my doofiness during the latter part of that video. Oy. I thought
I'd entered some alternate universe.

krastian 04.09.2008 05:05 PM

Ha ha ha.....it's not loading for me.

EDIT-Just downloaded the file.....sick seats indeed!!

krastian 04.11.2008 09:22 PM

Don't fuck with a Cap!!

jennthebenn 04.11.2008 09:28 PM

krastian 04.11.2008 09:31 PM

All day.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.17.2008 10:23 PM

Yay Penguins!

Boo Flyers!

:( Capitals

jennthebenn 04.17.2008 11:51 PM

I called Panto at at the beach today 'round 5 PM (two hours before the first drop of the puck) and he said, "Call me after the game."

"What about overtime?"

"Um, okay, call me before the second overtime."

Oh what a laugh we had!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.18.2008 12:02 AM

So I picked Montreal, Pittsburgh, Washington, New York, Dallas, San Jose, Colorado, and Detroit for the 1st round.

So far one of my picks won its series, one is losing, one is tied, and five are winning.

jennthebenn 04.23.2008 11:10 AM

Let's see how I did...

Montreal Vs Boston- Montreal in 5...Disgusting this went to 7 games; I'd riot, too.

Pittsburgh Vs Ottawa- Pittsburgh in 5...I was being nice giving Ottawa a game.

Washington Vs Philly- Washington in 6...Heartbreaker.

NJD vs NYR- Rangers in 6...Close here too

Detroit vs Nashville- Detroit in 4...I shoulda known better, Detroit's no powerhouse

San Jose vs Calgary- San Jose in 7...Yessir!

Minnesota vs Colorado- Minnesota in 5...Ugh

Anaheim vs Dallas- Dallas in 6...Ding ding!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.23.2008 11:25 AM

I got 7/8 of the winners right. I picked Caps over Flyers.

pantophobia 04.23.2008 11:58 AM

got 6 of the winners right and able to predict the number of games of the aves and pens

much easier then a ncaa bracket for sure
