Apart from the Krautrock bands (who are very often discussed here):

The Notwist
To Rococo Rot

SYRFox 04.04.2008 05:38 AM

Yeah I almost only know krautrock German bands... And Atari Teenage Riot, too

Toilet & Bowels 04.04.2008 05:46 AM

Katharsis
Wuhling
Amon Duul - Psychedelic Underground
Klaus Schulze

Gogogonorrhea 04.04.2008 07:36 AM

Being german I can tell you that german music all in all is horrible. That is music that is part of pop culture in the broadest sence. There are only a few good bands, most of them already mentioned. Otherwise:

Mutter
Camping Sex
Die Tödliche Doris
Blumfeld
Tocotronic

Destroyed 04.04.2008 07:51 AM

Cluster

_slavo_ 04.04.2008 07:55 AM

Oval
Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto)
Kante

nicfit 04.04.2008 07:57 AM

Nico :D

_slavo_ 04.04.2008 07:59 AM

And yes, Lali Puna used to be a pretty neat band too.

Florya 04.04.2008 08:14 AM

X-mal Deutschland
Scorpions
David Hasselhof :)

Floh de Cologne are too silly for me. Great cover art though!
Cool to see a mention of Xmal Deutschland too; I enjoyed them a lot.

A few (there are a lot of German bands I love)

Necronomicon
Der Plan
Pyrolator (though come to think of it, Pyrolator might be Swiss)
Guru Guru
Der Moderne Man
Gila
Popol Vuh
E.N.
Kraftwerk
Neu!
La Düsseldorf
Embryo
Faust
Can
Agitation Free

etc
etc
etc

PAULYBEE2656 04.04.2008 09:40 AM

einsturzende neubauten,

LittlePuppetBoy 04.04.2008 11:06 AM

Neu!
Can

batreleaser 04.04.2008 11:14 AM

every good band has been mentioned

MellySingsDoom 04.04.2008 11:39 AM

Any here like Ton Steine Sterben? Their "Keine Macht Fuer Niemend" LP is pretty fine pre-punk anarcho rock agit-prop fun. Also mentions to Mutter, the band that can go from Swans-style crushingness to sleazy pop without missing a beat.

Ton Steine Scherben are anarchic and wonderful.
There are so many good German bands

I highly recommend Julian Cope's "Krautrocksampler" to all you Kraut fans. Nice book with information about the most important bands and records from that era.
"The Crack in the cosmic egg" is a nice one too.

Gogogonorrhea 04.04.2008 05:36 PM

Heino

Could it be that almost every American knows Heino? I often come across American artists mentioning Heino in interviews with german media.

Accion Mutante

frades 04.07.2008 09:36 AM

not much to do with this thread but i've got a book describing the band "the who" and it is written in german. If anyone wants it (I give it and send it free, das ist ein geschenck) write me a PM

Coca Koma 04.14.2008 05:52 AM

Madsen (in my opinion the best german band at the moment)
Tocotronic
Die Ärzte
Pohlmann (well, not a band, but a pretty good singer/songwriter)

sarramkrop 04.14.2008 06:59 AM

I have a Tocotronic ep but it isn't that good. I think that it was one of those 'single of the week' on the nme a few years ago.
