Favorite Stand-Up Comedians?

George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Dane Cook, Zack Galafinakis, David Cross, Sam Kinison, Bill Cosby, Jerry Sienfeld, Lewis Black, Denis Leary, Brian Posiene, Patton Oswalt, Steve Martin....

Anyway, I have many more favorites, but I just wanted to know who your favorites are.
I think that stand-up comedy has influenced me in a way like no other. It definately has gotten me through hard times.

So, who's your fave?

=================================

I would have made a poll, but there are too many to exclude.

!@#$%! 05.22.2006 06:35 PM

chris rock, haven't seen /heard much of his stuff, but what i saw was hilarious.
i don't know who else. denis leary is ok. funny but not mind-blowing funny.
robin williams i find kind of painful actually.
oh, and the sight of denis miller makes me want to puke bile and curse his mother for giving birth to such a shit.

I'm not a big fan of stand-up, but I like Rich Hall, Dave Gorman, Mark Thomas and Tim Vine.

There are a lot of stand-up comedians whom I'm not bothered about, but who I think are very funny when they are doing interviews or quiz show appearances.

The funniest people on British TV aren't really comedians.

Cotton Crown 05.22.2006 06:40 PM

Hmm, I think i like Mitch Hedberg. I haven't seen any of his stuff in awhile but i used to think he was funny.

Flen flyys 05.22.2006 06:48 PM

Richard Lewis
George Carlin
Steven Wright
Eddie Izzard
Jerry Seinfeld
Larry Miller
Andy Kaufman
Denis Leary

acousticrock87 05.22.2006 06:49 PM

Zach Galifianakis is one of my favorites, but he rarely makes me laugh. He's just a very likeable comedian. He's funnier in writing.

Anthony Jeselnik is hystarical. You sould be able to find him on YouTube; he's pretty new.

Mitch Fatel has a really interesting style.

Pablo Fransisco was funny the first few times. I don't like him anymore, but if you've never seen him he's good.

Mitch Hedberg is definitely great. I remember once he was on Conan, and they cut to a different angle for a second. He said something like, "Hey wait, what was that? What was that camera angle, where you saw my feet? Ya that. Don't ever do that again." Classic.

Andy Samberg is good but he doesn't do stand-up anymore because of SNL. TheLonelyIsland.com has some of the funniest amateur films in existance. They're now the makers of the SNL Digital Shorts.

YouTube always has stand-up. That's all I use it for.

Chappelle was the show to watch my junior year in high school. It's really all I remember about that entire year.

marleypumpkin 05.22.2006 06:56 PM

Dave Chappelle, definately another ALL-TIME great comedian!

HaydenAsche 05.22.2006 07:16 PM

Dave Chappelle is ace.

John Violence 05.22.2006 08:02 PM

My favorite of all time is Bill Burr. Watching him was the only time I have ever cried of laughter watching stand up.

marleypumpkin 05.22.2006 08:17 PM

Some great listings:

Richard Lewis
Redd Foxx
Mitch Hedberg
Chris Rock
Larry Miller

& let us not forget, Cheech & Chong did live acts as well. Not really stand-up as much as live skits, but I still love it.

jennthebenn 05.22.2006 08:24 PM

redd foxx is fucking great, any aspiring stand up needs to study him to learn about TIMING.

roseanne barr is still the best female stand up i've ever seen. margaret cho still a distant second.

lewis black, mitch hedburg, george carlin ("have you ever noticed that most of the women that are against abortion are women you wouldn't wanna fuck in the first place?"), sam kinison, i'm gonna go way out on a limb and admit that paula poundstone had a couple televised shows i liked. uh...steven wright too.

RdTv 05.22.2006 08:39 PM

Hell yes, Steven Wright!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.22.2006 09:02 PM

Did Woody Allen ever do stand-up? I think Albee Singer's stand up in Annie Hall is really funny.

"I was thrown out of N.Y.U. my freshman year for cheating on my metaphysics final, you know. I looked within the soul of the boy sitting next to me. When I was thrown out, my mother, who was an emotionally high-strung woman, locked herself in the bathroom and took an overdose of Mah-Jongg tiles. I was depressed at that time. I was in analysis. I was suicidal as a matter of fact and would have killed myself, but I was in analysis with a strict Freudian, and, if you kill yourself, they make you pay for the sessions you miss. "

I don't know that much about stand-up, but about half of the people on Comedy Central are pretty funny.

Fuck me, I just googled it and answered my own question.

Although he did help to give us The Young Ones, so he should never be totally dismissed.

because the behaviour of government - the lies, stealing, corruption and self-serving behaviour of government - has become much worse then any parody could suggest. There is nothing left for alternative comedians to do, and as a result their is no alternaive comedy. When/if we get a semi-reasonable govenment again, with at least some sense of right and wrong, of accountability and honesty, then they will re-appear.

Heard. Most of the time us here in America only have to turn on the news and watch Bush speak to get a great and uproarious laugh.

candymoan 05.23.2006 06:06 AM

alexie sayle?

there is a huge catalogue of innovative, counter-culture comedy out there..

Hip Priest 05.23.2006 06:15 AM

Well, by 'alternative' comedy, we (in the UK) would mean 1980's comedy that directly challenged government etc, and their failings.

The proper alternative comedians are either now very mainstream (eg Elton) or have stopped doing comedy (eg Alexei Sayle - very well-selling author now).

Like I say, it's becasue this power-crazed and dishonest, abusive government is beyond parody.

There's some great innovative comedy - but not in the stand-up style, and not with the same aim. We have a comedy series called The Mighty Boosh - unique, bizarre and the funniest thing ever written.

porkmarras 05.23.2006 06:18 AM

The mighty boosh is mighty.
Jam and The Armando Iannucci show are the funniest comedy shows i've ever seen since i came to Britain.Oh and i'd put Nighty Night on there too!

porkmarras 05.23.2006 06:18 AM

Has anyone ever watched 'Strangers with candies?'

bytheriver 05.23.2006 07:38 AM

Bill Hicks - Still my absolute favourite I spent about four years of my live talking solely in Hicks lines, it was probably really annoying - start with Dangerous or Rants in E minor, but pretty much anywhere is good.

Johnny Vegas is a close second

Chris Morris might be the funniest person alive but he's not stand up (Brass Eye is the greatest thing ever made though if only for the line 'I'm talking Nonce Sense').

Others I like:

Mighty Boosh
Dylan Moran
Peter Kay
Bill Bailey
Chris rock
Dave Chappelle
Rich Hall
Stewart Lee
Richard Herring
Alexie Sayle

Alternative Comedy refers to a specific comedy scene in the early eighties (Ben Elton, Alexie Sayle, Ade Edmondon and basically every one associated with the Young Ones and Not the Nine O Clock News) it was more 'anarchic' surreal, confrontational, and stupid than what went before with lots of jokes about Margaret Thatcher, or so I've read. It ended a long time ago. The last major thing as far as I can tell in Comedy was either the Simpsons, or The Day Today.

porkmarras 05.23.2006 07:42 AM

Stewart Lee
Richard Herring................Why did i forget them?bytheriver do you ever listen to Stewart Lee's radio show on Resonance fm?

bytheriver 05.23.2006 07:56 AM

No, I dont live in London any more, my little brother used to do a show on Resonance a few years back though. Is it Comedy or Music?
I've been trying to find some recordings of Fist of Fun or Sunday's With Richard not Judy though.

'Thatch' was a frequent target, it's true. t was a dood time for comedy, especially stand-up, but wha it inspired afterwards (and what it's practitioners went on to do) was more sketch (and sometimes sitcom) oriented.

The Young Ones, apart from being one of the all-time top three sitcoms, helped to give birth to so many comedy careers, it defies belief: Smith and Jones, Hale and PAce, Fry and Laurie (hurrah!), French and Saunders, Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondason, Ben Elton, Lenny Henry, Alexei Sayle, and many many more. The number of cameo appearances from people who went on to further success in the comedy world is astonishing.

alyasa 05.23.2006 07:58 AM

Micheal Moore
