So I just saw Portishead live.

Just got back in the last hour, absolutely fucking incredible gig, the best this year (and I've seen The Jesus and Mary Chain, so its saying something). I'm not sure if we have any fans here, to be honest they're a bit of a marmite band, but they were shockingly loud, dark and depressing live. I hugged Beth Gibbons, and don't feel like washing for a while now. I never thought today would come and they'd finally come back after a decade, I'd been expecting the new album since 2005, but hell will it be worth the wait - They played alot of tracks from it, and all I'll say is theres some instant Portishead classics on Third. Though they're the most depressing band I can think of, after seeing them live I will die a happy man...

pbradley 04.17.2008 08:24 PM

I would love to see "Plastic" live.

avantgarde1 04.17.2008 08:24 PM

fuckign a. a buddy burned me a copy of 3... it's awesome. and i shall be purchasing it when it drops as well.

batreleaser 04.17.2008 08:28 PM

im definitley stoked for the new record. i read an interview and it sounds like theyve really been influenced a lot by sunn o))) and a lot of drone doom, they said the first time they heard sun o))) it reminded them of the first time they heard sonic youth and public enemy. just blown away. i think a drone influence could have an amazing effect on their sound.

avantgarde1 04.17.2008 08:39 PM

batrelease, who's those goofy looking dudes in yr signature? and right on w/ yr above statement!

It does it really does, though it's alot more overt live than on the record.

those "goofy lookin dudes" are stephen o malley from sun O))), keigi haino, and oren ambarchi, mr avantgarde.

ZEROpumpkins 04.17.2008 08:42 PM

Seeing Portishead live would be alright, I haven't slept in ages.

This Is Not Here 04.17.2008 08:46 PM

Are you calling them BORING zero, eh? Your heading the right way for a slapped bum.

ZEROpumpkins 04.17.2008 08:57 PM

They bore me at least. That album Dummy is just a total snooze fest. Massive Attack bore me more though. I got those albums under the impression that "Trip Hop" all sounded like DJ Shadow. Sadly, that is not the case.

ZEROpumpkins 04.17.2008 09:02 PM

Note to boardies who don't like them:
Don't call them Portishit, you'll make a lot of enemies.

Amen. If anything, go for a surrealist touch with Porti-Shed.

ZEROpumpkins 04.17.2008 09:10 PM

I used to pronounce it like that :D

You can pre-order it here... http://www.insound.com/Portishead/ar...rtist/INS24578

It also comes in a vinyl box set, w/ USB stick of the album, & artwork. I went ahead & snagged one up.

pbradley 04.17.2008 09:28 PM

The new album is far less chillax than their previous albums.

3 is probably their best.

Green Magnesium 04.18.2008 12:16 AM

Really like that new song in the YouTube link.

Half-Day Closing is my favorite song of theirs. Spooky.

Florya 04.18.2008 01:52 AM

Saw them perform 'Machine Gun' on Jools Hollands show the other day.
A bit of a departure from their older stuff, but a killer song nonetheless.
Can't wait for the new album.

Some of the stuff on the new record sounds like it's been produced by Broadcast or Can. I'm totally liking what they are doing and what they have done in the past.

Do you know the above album? There's some beautiful songs on it.

i enjoyed their set at atp, they've got better with every record, even if it does take 10 years

fwiw, keiji haino wouldn't fit into sunn o))) at all. which is sunn o)))'s loss.

PAULYBEE2656 04.18.2008 05:41 AM

I saw them in dublin in1994 and they were great. they are rumoured to play electric picnic this year hopefully they will because third is an awesome album

Which, Third?, I've downloaded it and yes it is an extremely beautiful suite of music. I've preordered the vinyl, can't wait to get it.

Ah yes, I'm aware of this, heard a few tracks, it all seems very nice, but Beth's voice sounds best with Portishead if you ask me. But hey, I may buy it if I can find it going cheap anywhere...

sunn o))) are a fun live band and good business men and everything, but keiji haino is out of their league as a player.

batreleaser 04.18.2008 11:15 AM

ooooookkkkkk, yeah keiji is fucking great. but oren is actually probably as good or even better a a player as him. anyways, they both added amazing things to sunn o))). you obviously havnt heard any of the stuff with sunn o))) and keigi, so why bother arguing?

Toilet & Bowels 04.18.2008 12:02 PM

there's no way on earth that oren ambarchi is as good as or better than haino, that's just silly talk. i've seen him play solo twice, and seen haino play 3 times, oren ambarchi is good don't get me wrong, but there's nothing i've heard from him that is comparable to haino's best work. and stephen o'malley & greg anderson... it's just ridiculous to even compare them to haino.

luckynumber9 04.19.2008 11:57 PM

For anyone that missed it or doesn't get CurrentTV, here's the video of Portishead doing a bunch of songs from the new album. It has sort of a Kid A vibe to it, so I think this album will be good.
