So recommend me a movie. Also anyone can use this to ask for some advice on movies.

Not to be condescending to anyone else, but I probably watch more movies than most of this board, since I usually watch one to two a day, almost every week day..

Anyway, I have no idea what kind of shit you're into, and most things I've watched lately has sucked, but some of my recent favorites were...

If you haven't seen El Topo or Holy Mountain, those are required films to be watched...........

A woman under the influence.

Eyes wide shut sucks in my opinion (I'd recommend many Kubrick films but not that one). I agree on Mulholland drive.

Ironic appreciation of blaxploitation films is always cool.

The Virgin suicides and Lost in translation.

Brazil - We are living Gilliam's dystopian nightmare.

Fight Club - I am Jack's infected wound. A diatribe against consumerism.

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - Hope springs eternal. Capra gives you hope that one person CAN make a difference.

White Heat - The ultimate gangster film. Cagney ruthlessly almost climbs to the top of the criminal ladder during the time of prohibition.

Man, I'm the only person on earth who didn't think Brazil was all that.

I thought it would've been really great, except the main chick who acted in it was just terrible...

Oh fuck yeah, Rob, Bad Lieutenant is in my top 10 favorite films ever.

Re: Brazil - Kim Griest is definitely the weakest link in that flick, but Jonathan Price and the rest of the cast are so amazing that it makes up for it. Ian Holm is such a great weenie of a boss and Katherine Helmond is a nightmare of a manipulating mother.

brazil is in my top five movies. eveything about it except for KG is perfect. the acting, the script the characters

Great list! I love many of these don't know 2 of em (Maniac and 964 Pinnochio) and am puzzled by your inclusion of Izo.

Izo just seems like a marathon of violence - and that guy maniacally strumming on his guitar...
From what I've been told, a lot of the point of this film is lost in the west because most of us don't know the pop culture icons in this Japanese ensemble film and we don't know the historical figures they are portraying.
It ends up just being a long series of murders in a lot of varied settings.

Eyes Wide Shut, bored me when I watched it.

Amores Perros, I have seen it one too many times.

i think a lot of people missed the point in eyes wide shut

the point was not to shock or scandalize

the point was to present a bumbling moron way way out of his depth

and kubrick did just that

just like in barry lyndon, where another mediocre male actor portrays a similar case

which actually make it a good casting choice.

I thought that was the point of Tom Cruise in general?

I thought Eyes Wide Shut was very interesting. It was sold as one tghing but in actuallity it is a tale of one man, his relationship with his wife, a day full of nearly every type of temptation imaginable, from under age girl to whores, to orgies, to drugged decadence, and he does not take them. he plows his way through and finds himself back at home with his wife, without ever betraying her

Eyes Wide Shut is in my top 5 movies. This is how much I like it.

yes while i generally detest tits cruise i think he was properly cast in this movie. his inability to adopt any facial expressions other than boyish smile & brood-with-chin-forward certainly contributed to the characterization of the naive fool. kubrick was an evil mastermind putting him in that position, and cruise's then-wife blew poor tom out of the water both in acting chops and as a character in the film. funny thing, they divorced afterwards (she's too much woman for that asswad in my opinion).

but anyway. yes.

also watch barry lyndon & observe how ryan o'neil's mediocre performance actually serves the same purpose. very smart.
