No Age - any good?

They're being compared to SY and MBV.
Anyone heard them?

█████████ 05.06.2008 10:22 AM

no i haven't, but now i'm a bit curious/skeptical.

Derek 05.06.2008 10:26 AM

I'm curious as well.

Everyneurotic 05.06.2008 10:55 AM

dudes that used to be in wives, wives were good.

uhler 05.06.2008 11:03 AM

i think they are really good.

pokkeherrie 05.06.2008 11:34 AM

Better reply to this thread now before khchris shows up and starts fighting someone.

I haven't heard a lot yet, but from what I have listened I don't hear the SY and MBV comparisons... but then SY and MBV (like Mogwai and a few others) are typically the kind of bands to get namechecked in about every other review of whatever non-mainstream random guitar band, especially from the likes of Pitchfork, etc.
I also haven't seen them live, so who knows it's more obvious then.

Anyway, I liked what I heard. They seem to get a lot of buzz at the moment, just like their fellow LA citizens Health. Both bands are touring Europe this month and I'm curious enough to go check them out.

All I've heard is their new album Nouns which I found to be incredibly mediocre.

batreleaser 05.06.2008 11:37 AM

theyre good, but nothing like sonic youth or mbv. basically, they make slightly experimental slightly noisy power pop/pop punk. they make some wicked good tunes that are easy on the ears and pretty fun, i was suprised how much i dig them, i have wierdo rippers and its great, but i still have yet to hear nouns, check out these songs:

every artist needs a tragedy
i wanna sleep
everybody's down
sun spots
boy void

Pax Americana 05.06.2008 12:03 PM

I really like Weirdo Rippers. Haven't heard Nouns yet, but I plan on picking it up soon.

raging_nelly 05.06.2008 12:43 PM

theyre shit...

sound like the beach boys or something

oh wait... someone just hit the fuzz pedal litterally as i was writing this... its gotten better

but still meh,,,

batreleaser 05.06.2008 01:23 PM

since when is sounding like the beach boys bad? have you heard pet sounds? or panda bear's person pitch for that matter?

batreleaser 05.06.2008 01:24 PM

even though, they sound nothing like the beach boys other than the fact they make interesting music in pop song format.

Trasher02 05.06.2008 02:15 PM

Discovered them recently, they're a bit mediocre in my opinion but good nonetheless.

atsonicpark 05.06.2008 03:16 PM

They're very, very average. They have some arty shit that is alright and then some moments that "Rock" more and it's all just kind of there, pretty boring actually. They actually attempt to occassionally do something different and interesting, so they'll probably be worshipped by people cuz they're so "forward-thinking, dude!!!!" So, yeah, it's not really anything awful to listen to but it's nothing to get excited about either. I don't see the fuss. Oh, and they sound NOTHING -- NOTHING!!!!!!!!! -- like MBV and barely like Sonic Youth. They're just some lofi rock group making occassionally interesting sounds but usually not doing anything noteworthy or special in any way.

SYRFox 05.06.2008 03:24 PM

I think they're great. To take "BOODY MESS"'s expression, Weirdo Rippers is really a blast! I can totally enjoy it, 30 minutes of great punk rock, lofi, sometimes shoegaze. I don't know if they're forward-thinking, but I think they rock. When the songs explode it's really great, as in Every Artist Needs A Tragedy, My Life's Alright Without You, Neck Escaper.
I also listened to Nouns, but for the moment I don't get all the worshipping it gets. It's a good one for sure but I don't think it's better than Weirdo Rippers. Maybe I'll have to listen to it more, it's only been out for a couple of days really. And on each listen it seems to grow... so maybe it's as good as people tell (I mean, it got 4.5 out of 5 on Tiny Mix Tapes)

pretty much sums it up as im concerned. theyre ok but a bit boring.

atsonicpark 05.06.2008 03:32 PM

Right, I can see people liking it, and I don't mind music that doesn't really do anything new, I just think only artists who are doing something different (or at least just writing AMAZING songs, which this band isn't very good at) are worthy of this kind of rabid praise. Again, it's just, they're doing like one slightly different thing and people will worship it because of that, which is ridiculous.

Glad you like it, syrfox, it seems like something you'd dig, and it's not really... BAD... But to the original poster, again: it really really sounds nothing like MBV or SY..

I was flipping through the channels today and I saw No Age on MTV2 being interviewed because apparently No Age is part of some new "lofi music movement" as MTV2 was calling it. You can read more about this new lofi music scene at mtvnews.com!!

cryptowonderdruginvogue 05.06.2008 03:47 PM

they are one of my favorite bands at the moment
scope them out

Florya 05.06.2008 04:58 PM

Thanks for the input gentlemen.:)

ha!

batreleaser 05.06.2008 06:10 PM

i dont think theyre trying to do anything amazing, they just make pop punk cool again. thats why i like them, fast fuzzy pop songs with cool power chords. not to be taken very seriously at all, im sure anyone could put on weirdo rippers and dig it and hum along with it, just good ol melodies and power chords.

uhler 05.06.2008 06:28 PM

probably my favorite band right now. now mika miko needs to come out with a new record.

super_charger 05.06.2008 06:47 PM

Punk with ambient interludes. Its nothing I'm going to piss my pants over but I do like it.

atsonicpark 05.07.2008 02:15 AM

Heh. PISSED JEANS.

The sad thing is, I wasn't joking in the slightest about MTV2 doing a feature on this band as part of the "lo fi movement". There were some other bands interviewed but I had never heard of them. One had a cute chick in it.

drrrtyboots 05.07.2008 05:23 AM

Pissed Jeans rule.

This new record of theirs has them sounding a whole lot like Japanther with a little less reliance on the ultra-pop sound that Japanther seems to do pretty well.

SYRFox 05.07.2008 05:48 AM

Ha! Now I'm shocked! Adam Cooley watching MTV2?? That's just like if Sonic Youth were doing a best of for Starbucks. Sellout! :D

atsonicpark 05.07.2008 09:31 AM

Oh, never heard of 'em, except Times New Viking. And like I said, syrfox, I was flippin through the channels and I saw two hipsters in pink shirts and sunglasses that said NO AGE LO-FI MOVEMENT and was like the fuck.

Once again I completely agree with you. My friend recommended them to me and said they sounded like MBV while they sound nothing like them. They're not bad but certainly not interesting.

uhler 05.07.2008 03:19 PM

i don't care what anyone says i think they're amazing just like a nice tuna sub. i should get one those right now while listening to no age.

i heard them live opening for liars and bought a couple of their records.

they were good, but i think people make too much of how good they are-- they aren't mind blowing. they are fun rocknroll with a good punk energy. but they aren't doing anyting new or revolutionary as far as i could tell.

--

ps - after reading the thread, i realize that people made these same points here already. so just count this as another vote.

atsonicpark 05.08.2008 07:27 AM

Trasher, that always SICKENS me, when people compare anything to MBV. Not that MBV are my godhead or anything, but there are so many bands that get compared to them, it's ridiculous. "Oh, you have a bunch of guitar layers on your record and a decent hook in the chorus, you're just like MBV!" They're like the go-to band if you want to compare a band to them and automatically make that band seem interesting or different. No Age sounds NOTHING like MBV, not in the slightest.

Certainly, there are bands with definite similarities to MBV -- Fleeting Joys, Swirlies, etc -- but too many bands get compared to them that sound nothing like them. It's really silly. "Over-distorted guitars and a person who hits notes when they sing! JUST LIKE MBV!" Fuck that.

Last time I bought the NME I've counted something like 10 Sonic Youth mentions on that issue alone.

PAULYBEE2656 05.08.2008 10:37 AM

marcos, yeah, i checked today is the day out and its damn sweet! thanks for that!!!

Everyneurotic 05.12.2008 12:32 AM

i finally listened to it and i have to say i think it's pretty awesome, there's parts of them that remind me of white heaven.

and it's pretty impressive considering wives musical style.
