All things Sludge.

Sometimes, nothing but a smoke and a listen to Oddfellow's Rest quite does the job. Am i right, or am I right?

batreleaser 06.23.2008 11:58 AM

eyehategod rules all.

carolina sludge is the best though, as those bands have lots of punk influences (for the most part anyways). corrosion of conformity, weedeater (listened to god luck and goddspeed earlier, brutal), antiseen (pushing the term 'sludge', but they got that grimey southern brutal edge), buzzov*en, etc..

sludge is indeed very very awesome, combining hardcore with doom metal was a fucking brilliant idea.

other greats:
dystopia
grief
acid bath
crowbar
cavity
down (first album)
bongzilla
early electric wizard

and then of course theres the neurosis atmospheric sludge, but thats for another thread, eh.

note:
i hope to christ youre taking about sludge metal, otherwise i just wasted a dicload of time.

batreleaser 06.23.2008 12:02 PM

oh, and yeah, that album rules (i spaced out and thought oddfellow's rest was some sludge band ive never heard, then looked at my itunes and saw the crowbar record, hah).

MellySingsDoom 06.23.2008 12:13 PM

For 1980's sludge, Dutch funsters Gore can't be beat. They did a Peel Session in 1988, which consisted of one 25-minute "song". Wish I still had the tape of that.

demonrail666 06.23.2008 12:16 PM

Yeah, it's a frame of mind thing. Eyehategod are one of the few bands i know of that I can love on pretty much every level. When all else is said and done, Eyehategod just ARE.

And this is what I call a RIFF!

Everyneurotic 06.23.2008 11:19 PM

it always puzzled me the sludge tag, i love ehg, in the top ten bands of all time for me probably, but is it heavy shit that's not as fast as stoner but not as slow as doom?

really, can't see much difference between grief and khanate or kyuss and down's first album (as mentioned by release the bats).

but yeah, fucking a.

Onani Nic 06.23.2008 11:50 PM

Is this sludge or doom?
http://www.myspace.com/getonthehorse

vulva 06.23.2008 11:54 PM

picking between sludge and doom is really picking at pubes after awhile. If you can't tell which it is, it's probably both.

Anyways I basically came in here to talk about how great Soilent Green are

Everyneurotic 06.23.2008 11:56 PM

whitehorse are good but sometimes sound too much like khanate, innit?

Onani Nic 06.24.2008 08:07 AM

I dunno Whitehorse makes me wanna grab a beer and do some really slow headbangin' where as Khanate make me want to cry or puke. Although I can hear the musical similarities and love both, to me they're a pretty different listening experience.

demonrail666 06.24.2008 08:14 AM

Agreed on the greatness of Soilent Green. I missed them last time they came over with Crowbar and don't even know if they still exist anymore. I'm not sure how much of the old NOLA scene was destroyed by the Katrina thing, but I'm sure a significant part of it was.

Toilet & Bowels 06.24.2008 08:28 AM

eyehategod are a band that i don't like as much as i want to

demonrail666 06.24.2008 08:36 AM

Personally I think Eyehategod are one of those bands that transcends any genre they're associated with. I was obsessed with them for about two years and would rarely listen to anything else. I was in a very bad state of mind at the time and actually had to stop listening to them because they reinforced that state of mind to a degree where it was becoming counterproductive. Listening to Crimes Against Skin on a loop is not a healthy way to live your life.

I watched a Pantera DVD the other day and found a similarly obsessive underpinning with their fans too. I'm not a huge Pantera fan myself, but can see how easy it would be for someone to become totally obsessed with them.

batreleaser 06.24.2008 09:01 AM

sludge=doom metal + hardcore and/or crust punk. which to me sounds like the perfect music. like eyehategod, you can eithr lay back, light a blunt, and space out with the amazing riffs going through your head. or you can get piss drunk, get in the pit, and get fucking wild. when i was doing a lot of drugs (mainly opiates like oxycontin or heroin, and lots and lots of weed) eyehategod was the band i was listening to more than any other. they really are one of the best drug bands ever.

pantera's 'far beyond driven' and 'the great southern trendkill' are two of the heaviest records ever to sell a million albums.

demonrail666 06.24.2008 09:13 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't pretend to be a big Pantera fan, but can certainly appreciate that they had something. I was listening to VDoP last night and have to admit that for an album that sold as many copies as it did, that is one heavy fucking record.

batreleaser 06.24.2008 10:16 AM

i cant stand cowboys from hell, and id say vulgar is only ok, but theyre one of the few bands to actually get heavier as they got more popular. metallica shoulda learned a thing or two from thos boys. i love far beyon driven. i like downs first record a lot too, nola.

demonrail666 06.24.2008 10:23 AM

I've never been able to get into Down. Considering whose in them, I always think they should be far better than they actually are.

batreleaser 06.24.2008 10:38 AM

true, but their first record is cool, really relaxed, but still heavy. 'stone the crow' is the best southern rock anthem ever, forget free bird.

and who was talkin about khanate and whitehorse? i dunno if id call them sludge in the traditional eyehategod sense. maybe 'atmospheric sludge' in the vein of neurosis.

And the millions who bought the album were probably Southerners or 13 year olds with emotional problems.

That's harsh though, I won't deny that I really enjoyed Pantera when I started to listen to heavier music. "Floods" is awesome.

batreleaser 06.24.2008 10:49 AM

top 10 sludge metal records (just traditional or stoner sludge, so no neurosis or isis can be included):
1. eyehategod-dopesick
2. corrosion of conformity-animosity
3. crowbar-obediense through suffering
4. dystopia-human=garbage
5. eyehategod-take as needed for pain
6. grief-miserably ever after
7. weedeater-god luck and good speed
8. buzzov*en-to a frown
9. electric wizard-dopethrone (way more doom than sludge obviously, but the sludge is there and this record is just too good to ignore, i was also considering putting sleep's holy mountain here, but theyre not sludge at all, so fuck it)
10. antiseen-noise for the sake of noise

Derek 06.24.2008 10:55 AM

Electric Wizard are too good.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.24.2008 11:06 AM

I'm just getting into it so I don't know many bands, but I do enjoy Weedeater and eyehategod.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.24.2008 11:14 AM

I just found a pretty good looking comp. for download.
http://sludgeswamp.blogspot.com/search?q=crowbar

And I just listened to some crowbar, very fucking excelent.

demonrail666 06.24.2008 03:05 PM

Yeah, like eyehategod, crowbar are one of those bands its easy to get sort of obsessed with. there's a seriousness there that goes beyond the mere need to smoke yourself silly. not that that isn't a major part of them either, of course.

i know the formulas, but in reality, it's not such a radically different kind of shit than doom or stoner. it's something for the really anal, you know? "see how they stop and let the guitar feedback? that's doom but hear how they pick up the speed at minute 1:37? that's sludge".

seriously, speaking of something that they use as a point of reference, the crusty vocals (influenced by amebix and nausea, etc.) don't sound too dissimilar to some black metal folk which is in itself a point of reference of many doom bands.

i really don't see the point in differenciating grief from monarch, for example, besides song lenghts.

----

weedeater are ok but they always seemed like ehg junior, for some reason.

---

and pantera, i love them but can see why people don't like them; they were a very important band for me growing up. i'd be hijacking the thread if a started talking about them...also, the great southern trendkill debuted at like number 3 on the billboard charts and sold millions, this is an album featuring SETH PUTNAM from ANAL CUNT in it.

----

anyway, anyone else into kylesa?

thanks for the link

viewtiful_alan 06.24.2008 06:16 PM

Earth 2 is currently blowing my mind.
And I'm listening to it while sober.

Thanks for the link, listening now.

batreleaser 06.24.2008 09:14 PM

the great southern trendkill is fucking amazing.

Yeah, that's sort of true. I think certain bands associated with the NOLA scene, particularly Crowbar and EHG seperate themselves though, as well as the old UK band Iron Monkey. But yeah, there are times when the 'differences' between Stoner, Doom and Sludge seem quite negligable.

thats an amazing record but its dirge, not sludge.

and no one mentioned UpsideDown Cross who were making heavy dirge when many of you were still in pampers. Damn I'm old.

Onani Nic 06.25.2008 09:14 AM

I didn't know dirge was even a term. I always described Earth 2 as drone. I'd probably even say Earth 2 is the drone record.

Toilet & Bowels 06.25.2008 09:28 AM

so what about pigfuck?

demonrail666 06.25.2008 09:30 AM

Ahhh, my beloved Pigfuck ... swoons ... and then shuffles off to find copy of Soul Crusher.

Everyneurotic 06.25.2008 11:12 AM

can we just talk about down tempo heavy shit and stop with the sub sub sub genreing?

---

so no one else likes kylesa, eh? good band, not mindblowing but they are decent.

Er, you sold your copy of "Soul Crusher" to me a few years ago, and very nice it is too. ;)

Everyneurotic 06.25.2008 11:51 AM

i wish i could buy that one.

jonathan 06.26.2008 02:05 AM

I'm listening to Electric Wizard's Dopethrone right now, and I'll probably burn a copy of Take as Needed for Pain here in a bit. I had heard Witchcult Today by EW, but I'm only on track three of Dopethrone and this record is obviously waaay better.

I also really enjoy Dystopia.

I've been slowly been getting into the genre and related genres for the passed few months. It might become my new obsession.

Not totally related, but somewhat related... Pentagram.

demonrail666 06.26.2008 02:09 AM

Pentagram are awesome. Not really Sludge, but who gives a fuck about that? Great band.
