Why in the hell did I buy that album?

Do you ever go through your music collection and happen upon an album whose purchase, in retrospect, is totally inexplicable? You literally utter an inward groan of disgust at your own bad taste?

A few of mine:

Venus Hum
Pedro the Lion
Luscious Jackson
French Kicks
Jets to Brazil
Alkaline Trio
Far
Semisonic (this deserves self-flagellation)

There are surely many more, but I suspect I'm mentally repressing them.

EyeballGrowth 05.28.2006 04:26 PM

Ahahaha semisonic. Well yeah I got a stack of about 8 or 9 ones that I got in the early 90's that I wonder why I ever bought. Probably cause I was 11

Veruca salt
Sponge - Rotting Pinata
Metallica - Load

h8kurdt 05.28.2006 04:26 PM

Korn in general

To be honest their isn't many I regret buying.

Inhuman 05.28.2006 04:27 PM

I barely have any :). I just got really into music recently and I went through the whole pop punk phase pretty fast!

TATU
Backstreet Boys
Brittany Spears

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.28.2006 04:28 PM

I never listened to it.

Also, some live Black Sabbath album with some shitty singer, as well as every Rolling Stones album I have ever bought. Add Abbey Road to that list too, my little siblings have played the shit out of that album and I hate it now.

qprogeny79 05.28.2006 04:29 PM

temple of the dog? audioslave? local h? live?

all collecting dust from my formative years of taste.

acousticrock87 05.28.2006 04:30 PM

I thought about starting a thread like this but forgot about it.

I have so many CDs I regret buying. I have a ton of hardcore/metal stuff that I can't stand anymore. I have a Good Charlotte CD that I still don't think is that bad. Music is music.

h8kurdt 05.28.2006 04:30 PM

Nothing wrong with audioslaves first album or temple of the dog.

Hell, I'd keep that album just for its cover and title.

I won't comment on the Rolling Stones. You're wounding me.

truncated 05.28.2006 04:33 PM

I also own a live Steppenwolf.

*Hangs head in shame*

Alex's Trip 05.28.2006 04:35 PM

johnnywinternoshow 05.28.2006 04:53 PM

Oh dear I thought this was from around '95

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.28.2006 04:54 PM

BTW truncated, I love your new avatar

Savage Clone 05.28.2006 04:59 PM

I have an EP by Inspiral Carpets that I know is damaging my cred just by being in my house.
A few of Zappa's more cheesy efforts
Oho- Vitamin Oho

More recently, that Virgin Insanity reissue LP.

atari 2600 05.28.2006 05:15 PM

some in my cassette collection were purchased back in high school through the columbia house club, so there's a bunch of marginal '80s music there.

themawt71 05.28.2006 05:37 PM

all of the cds i would be embarassed about have been sold and new and better cds have taken their place.

iron butterfly
metal church
bel biv devoe(i was 9)
mili vanilli(9)
dinosaur jr-without a sound

Toilet & Bowels 05.28.2006 06:01 PM

i bought some singles by some shit bands back at the height of britpop. i had a single by each of these bands: menswear, ocean colour scene, cast, kula shaker. i can't remember which ones they were though. blame impressionable youth and naivety towards journalistic hyperbowl.
it's kind of a weird question though, because i could probably tell you exactly why i bought every single record i own, even the ones i don't like.
being an avid music buyer is often about taking calculated risks in the search for the gold.

i can't think of anything i was particularly into that now i find awful though. aside from that one summer (1992) that i was into guns n roses.

hey alex 05.28.2006 06:14 PM

most of the cure cds i have (i like some of tyhem, but sometimes I iwsh i didn't have so many of htem)
kiss-destroyer
super furry animals-phantom power
elliot smith, basemnet on a hill
every deatch cab album (some are good, but i bough tmost of them during 2 weeks when i was on a kick)
bright eyes, too much bright eyes

HaydenAsche 05.28.2006 06:16 PM

Alkaline Trio
Blood Brothers
Haste the Day

That's about it. I don't think I'd heard any of the bands when I bought the cds.

EMMAh 05.28.2006 06:17 PM

I actually like Alkaline Trio

Ramones Greatest Hits Live is a CRAP cd.

Inhuman 05.28.2006 06:19 PM

I used to be into death cab a lot, but not so much anymore. I gave my CD's away, but really I didn't mind "we have the facts and we're voting yes" that much. Ben Gibbard has a nice voice, but the style is way overdone and his lyrics aren't too good.

Calm down, calm down!It was only an album of theirs that i didnt like. They're hardly Broadcast though are they?

Toilet & Bowels 05.28.2006 06:51 PM

which add n to x record was it? i guess their last record sucked and their other ones were nothing like broadcast.

porkmarras 05.28.2006 07:05 PM

If memory doesn't fail me i think it might be the one that came out just after Avant Hard(wich i really like). It was a case of me thinking that they started sounding like a joke that outlasted its welcome.
''Little black rocks in the sun'' is still top notch though!

Toilet & Bowels 05.28.2006 07:08 PM

oh, ok. i was going to say if you haven't heard avant hard then you really should, and if you'd said that it was avant hard that you hadn't liked i would have called you an ambulance!
by the way, i tried to send you a PM but it got bounced back because your box is full.

CHOUT 05.28.2006 07:42 PM

Arcade Fire (Took a chance, hadn't even heard them before. Yawn. Sold it.)

atsonicpark 05.28.2006 07:46 PM

Wow, if you guys don't want those add n to x or jets to brazil records, I'll take em off your hands..

worst cd I ever bought was blood brothers - burn piano island burn. heard a song, thought it was cool, all my friends thought it was an awesome cd, saw it cheap, bought it, hated it.. really really listened to it a few times and picked up on a few cool things but the singers are just so goddamn awful. horrible album.

atsonicpark 05.28.2006 07:46 PM

Also, Inhuman, it's nice to see you like sigh.

Everyneurotic 05.28.2006 09:28 PM

i have a few:

*powderfinger, got it at a used store in ny and bought it because i read a good review, heard it twice, i wish i never heard it at all
*u2 - the joshua tree (no need to explain)
*finch - something with the word "burn" in the title, i heard a couple of songs from their ep and got the full lenght, crap.
*apartment 26; heard it was geezer butler's kid playing electronica, when it was just nu metal
*filter - title of record, would think it was a pirate copy
*every time i die - hot damn, only one song is good.
*children of bodom - follow the reaper, only one good song, too much wanking
*avenged sevenfold - waking the fallen, i heard one song, thought it was fun, then got the record, didn't make it to the whole record. saw a picture of them and realized why it sucked so much.
*molotov, a couple of songs are ok and barely funny but most of it is crap.

Everyneurotic 05.28.2006 09:28 PM

and sigh are fucking awesome!!!

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 05.28.2006 09:30 PM

usaully stuff i pick up at pawn shops for the shear cheap price. Ill buy cds, listen once, then thats it. They just make the collection look bigger.

HaydenAsche 05.28.2006 09:35 PM

I really like ETID - Hot Damn! They put on a fantastic show.

noisemachine 05.28.2006 09:40 PM

A few years back I bought a lot of random crap like Staind, Linkin Park and Deftones. Definitely regret those. Oh, and I just bought the new RHCP album. No idea why, it was just one of those stupid impulse purchases when I was in Costco one day. It must have been the strange combo of all the free samples getting to my head.
