Musical pleasures that are barely justifiable

I reckon that, as proud as we are of our varying musical tastes here, there's certain things we like that are so rubbish, they cna't be justified on even an ironic or funny sense. With that in mind, here's to place to confess your musical sins, and have the board pass judgement on you.

Well, I'll start - I have this liking for the Ting Tings which I can't really defend, but I can't help myself, I just really like them, in spite of their inherent annoyingness. In fact, I'm even tempted to go and see them play live later on this year.

Right, having lost whatever credibility I had (not much to start off with anyway), what's your musical shameful secret?

demonrail666 07.04.2008 10:19 AM

You're worried about losing credibility points by confessing a certain liking for the ting tings? Well I don't believe that your liking for them isn't at least slightly ironic, which only puts you amongst millions of others. Including i dare say, the ting Tings themselves. Now if you'd said Gary Moore. Then I'd be concerned.

Sonic Youth 37 07.04.2008 10:20 AM

The Sounds...every part of my musical soul tells me not to like them, but I do...a lot.

sarramkrop 07.04.2008 10:22 AM

I'm neither particularly proud nor particularly ashamed of anything I listen to.

Nah, I'm not worried about losing cred points. I'm just probably going through a mid-life crisis thingy - down wiv tha kids and all that. Either that, or I want to bum their drummer senseless.

gualbert 07.04.2008 10:24 AM

Most times I made people listen to SY , they hated them ( and probably therefore had a bad opinion on me).

I'm the same. I'm aware that some of my tastes are painfully hip (Pussy Galore, NNCK) while others might raise some hipster eyebrows (U2, Velvet Revolver). All I'll say is that I like them for reasons that I don't always fully understand, but I DO like them. And that's good enough for me.

MellySingsDoom 07.04.2008 10:28 AM

Ah yes, one more: Meat Loaf's "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" - in my pre-homo days, I was seeing this Irish girl, and this was "our" song. I even bought it on 7" single, too.

Ah, so now we're getting closer to the reality of the subject!;)

Hahahahahahaha

The idea that any couple, be they straight, homo, or whatever could have that as 'their song' is one of the funniest things i've read in a long time. Simon Bates would surely be very proud of you,

MellySingsDoom 07.04.2008 10:32 AM

Yes, my hands and unmentionable bits have a firm grip on the bottom-end of the Ting Tings. Actually, I bet a good few gayers end up going to that gig....hmm, maybe me going is not such a bad idea at all...

Meat Loaf could suit a post-homo person perfectly well too.:)

MellySingsDoom 07.04.2008 10:35 AM

Meat would do anything for love, I hear. Except rimming.

demonrail666 07.04.2008 10:49 AM

I like that Ting Tings song. I can't say that I harbour any kind of desire to bum their drummer though. Or their singer for that matter. Nor would I say that I like it enough to want to watch them live, or buy the single.

If it pops up on the wireless though, I'm not displeased.

terriblecanyons 07.04.2008 11:16 AM

Sometimes when I'm feeling unoriginal and like a prepubescent girl I'll put on some Paramore to make myself feel more important.

There's a few Manic Street Preachers songs I like on that basis. And I still think Gene are great. But it's just stuff and things, innit?

i'd never really thought about the concept of people taking pride in what they listen to, until now.

Well put.

atsonicpark 07.04.2008 11:39 AM

probably everything i like, i don't give a fuck.

SYRFox 07.04.2008 11:55 AM

I have some tastes that some/most people on here would find barely justifiable, like Simian Mobile Disco, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip, or The Rapture.
But I don't care, I like them anyway, and it doesn't forbid me to listen to Mouthus or Double Leopards or whatever

This Is Not Here 07.04.2008 12:22 PM

The thing is about this board, some really lame pop acts are acceptable for some ironic-retro-hipster-indiekid reasons I don't understand. Recent discussion topics have made it apparent that liking acts like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper are totally acceptable. However, everytime I've mentioned either PRIMAL SCREAM or THE STONE ROSES I've been shot down everytime. Maybe it's because they're too Northern and grim, not prentious enough, or just all-out too much fun for this board. But there we have it, I fucking love PRIMAL SCREAM and THE STONE ROSES. Deal with it kids!!

atsonicpark 07.04.2008 12:37 PM

who shot you down over primal scream?

that's kinda odd.. they're not a band i ever listen to or anything but they're certainly.. um.. acceptable.

SYRFox 07.04.2008 12:47 PM

I actually dislike Bobby Gillepsie and everything he's done with Primal Scream. Well, everything, except XTRMNTR, which I consider a masterpiece, a perfect album, a classic, smoething you need in your life, etc.
But they're certainly acceptable.

pbradley 07.04.2008 03:15 PM

I have no justifications for why I dislike some music, either.

Yeah but on the other hand one of the good things about the internet compared to real life is that you can disregard good manners and tell people what you really think about their favourite music that is actually shit.

demonrail666 07.04.2008 03:37 PM

If someone here told me my taste was shit, I'd be crushed.

Pookie 07.04.2008 03:38 PM

You're taste is half shit.

acousticrock87 07.04.2008 03:50 PM

I'll listen to John Mayer and Keiji Haino on the same day, and I know people that look down on me for both. Depends who I'm talking to.

Here, I'd probably be unable to justify liking Jimmy Eat World and R.E.M., but down the street Jandek and Acid Mothers Temple are quite unforgivable. My justifcation is that if I enjoy it then there's something non-shitty about it, even if I don't know what it is.

atsonicpark 07.04.2008 03:50 PM

jimmy eat world isn't embarassingly bad.

Pookie 07.04.2008 03:52 PM

Who's down the street? Do you go down there often? IS IT SAFE!

acousticrock87 07.04.2008 03:57 PM

Down the street is probably 95% of the people I know in real life. I know maybe 3 or 4 people who are into underground/subculture music, but most of my friends don't get atonal/noise music of any kind. That may be the reason I like so much pop stuff.

The only reason I got into other kinds of music is because my ex specifically hated SY, and when we broke up it was all I listened to, for freedom. Then I actually started loving it, and followed the yellow brick road to the real music world.

demonrail666 07.04.2008 03:58 PM

I was just about to type something related to this topic, but Johnny Thunders' 'Blame it on Mom' just came on my iTunes, and I came to realise how a saxophone can so easily capsize a perfectly reasonable song.

Sorry, as you were.

I won't deny that I love the Preachers, if anything, the first 3 albums and the singles from Everything Must Go. Newer stuff doesn't float my boat as well.

The Exploited

This Is Not Here 07.04.2008 05:13 PM

I also really enjoy Bjork and Kate Bush, which hasn't earnt me many points here before...

Haha. I still have my copy of Olympian. It's a genuine guilty pleasure in that really, it is a load of old crap, but there's a strange charm about it isn't there. The lyrics are absolutely woeful, but there's this really odd sincerity about the whole thing. It's like they were so desperate to be The Smiths, but had based their entire worship of them on reading Morrissey interviews rather than listening to the albums. I have a strange fascination with Gene that could easily see me rambling on about them forever. So I'll stop now ... for everyone's benefit. Although I could find myself referring to the topic again quite soon.

Yes your right, XTRMNTR is a killer album and essential listening. However, I've never understood why Gillespie being a dick, (which yes, he is) is a problem at all. All good rock-stars are twats as we've so throughly discovered recently, and he flies the ever-so wilting flag of rockn'roll high which few acts do these days. I feel people expect profoundity and coherant sense out of such a long-lived and prolific band, but PS are good-time music, something to drink beer too with mates and get with chicks.
