Late Night TV Hosts
I looked but didn't see a topic like this, so sorry if it's been done. It's late at night and this is the only TV I really think is worth watching anymore (and even that's disputable).
I don't really know any non-American hosts for the poll, but they're obviously welcome in the discussion. |
gilbert godfried
|
i watched that colbert report for the first time the other day.. i smirked for a bit and turned it off..... he aint no chris morris as i was led to believe!
|
i like conan.
|
Rove McManus is the closest I know to a late night TV host, so I'll go with him.
|
as for non us hosts... jonathon ross is always good for a laugh if you can get over his sex jokes....
the friday night project is ok. us irish had the longest running tv chat show host for decades.. he is a national institution and an amazing interviewer, he could literally get blood out of a stone and never ever stopped short on asking probing questions.. he was brilliant.. mr gay byrne ![]() the virgin prunes on gay byrnes late late show its hard to finsd any great interviews like the gerry adams one and the ian paisley one..legends... he retired in 1999 and we got pat the plank kenny..... this classic clip from a couple of years ago sums him up.. one of the funniest things ive evr seen on live irish telly pat the plank kenny gets interrupted |
I chose Craig Ferguson, because he's scottish and I like scottish people because my grandma is scottish and reminds me of her, even though she's not really a very nice woman.
|
They're a dying breed. Seriously, in another 5 years, there will be no more late night talk shows.
Mark my words. |

Maybe not in the US. In the UK, I think the Jonathan Ross show will be going on for decades more. People can swear freely on British TV and talk about more interesting things. |
There are also less of them in the UK, and they're on less frequently so there's less barrel scraping going on. Jonathan Ross is a twat though and it's a shame he's pretty much got the only talk show on TV at the moment.
|
I am always partial to letterman. I like that he does not care.

I couldn't agree more. |

and he manages and runs a damn fine proffessional racing team with bobby rahal ![]() |

You have to be a twat, really. I love how he blatantly takes the piss out of all of his guests, to their faces. Yes, he can be self-indulgent, but he has to be to fill up an hour-long show when his guests are cunts like Adele and Agyness Deyn. Oh, and The Graham Norton Show has some good guests! He had John Waters on the other week, and Harry Shearer. |
Jonathan Ross has been hosting chat shows for about 20 years now, and he never used to be a twat.
Somebody made the mistake of telling him he was funny and he believed them...because he's a twat. |
I don't mind Graham Norton so much. He does have some good guest.
|
Ah, whatever floats your boat. I'm not saying he isn't a twat, I'm saying TV turns you into one and it's sort of unavoidable in the end. He's a nice twat.
|
the charlie rose show is my favorite and only "talk show", if that qualifies.
of course he's an annoying prick but he's got the best guests-- smart people who know a lot about what they are talking about. and no soundbytes. which is always refreshing. like look at this geek: ![]() lots of good shit archived: http://www.charlierose.com/home |
i like letterman cause he's an asshole, but i don't usually watch tv.

Ah, classing up the thread...(ah, !@#$%! too) suppose you've heard about the recent Top Gear shake-up (not necessarily a talk show)...it's a shame http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2247815/Top-Gear's-James-May-and-Richard-Hammond-%22may-leave%22-BBC-motoring-show.html |
Actually, I have seen quite a bit of Jonathan Ross on YouTube and he's much better than any of the Americans. Forgot about him. He doesn't seem like he's actually a twat, though, beyond it being part of his job.
I think Ferguson is pretty underrated, though. He's good at letting things fall into place naturally. If a skit goes badly but still turns out funny at his own expense, he'll air it. And a good deal of his monologues seem improvised. |

Gee, I hope it qulifies. Since there is a lot more actual talking. Look at the geek here: ![]() ![]() Lou & Laurie on Charlie Rose (a must!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol-AcKzRcc4 |
I always respected Steven Colbert but not as much until after his Charlie Rose interview.

yeah that's when they caught bill gates in albuquerque driving too fast. what he says about falling to catch his computer, i think it's probably a load of balls-- more likely an angry girlfriend socked him good! cos pavement is flat, and that would have to be some weirdass shaped pavement to hit him like that! |
Craig Ferguson, hands down.
|
I love late night shows.
I usually choose between Leno and lettermen depending on what segments each is having/what guests. I always watch Leno on Mondays for headlines. And tehn I watch conan (his timeslot is roughly uncotnested) and anything after that is up in the air. Leno is great when you want to know what you are getting. And i've always liked Kevin Eubanks. But Letterman has a spontaneous and uncaring quality that you just don't see too often, not to mention paul schafer is a crack up. You know who sucks? Jimmy Kimmel. He sucks the same way as bob saget... you just can't help but look at him and think: douchebag |
So they take you to jail in New Mexico for speeding like they do in Louisiana?
I suppose it is so, or used to be... qualifies...oops, I made a typo earlier today shit like that^ really bugs me more than it probably should... Letterman may have lost a lot of zip, but he still has his moments of zenith par excellence... all in all though, Conan's show is the most entertaining...it is more like the show Letterman had on NBC than Dave's current CBS show. I don't like the occasional jokes about religion, however... and who would have known Conan would fare so well? he was fairly dreadful for the first few years... a deer caught in the headlights... |
Hhaa I was too young but my dad told me he wasn't always very good.
I'm looking forward to his hosting the tonight show next year... Any thoughts on conan's old slot being taken by Jimmy Fallon? |
david letterman has amused me on more than one occasion, though generally speaking "i don't watch that shit"
in fact i don't watch much television at all. jonathon ross is alright. |
Quote:
yes but you have to see bog saget in "the aristocrats" and you're gonna be WHO THE FUCK IS THAT????? ![]() |

As has been discussed before in years past, I watched Letterman from the very first show on a b&w tv in my bedroom as a young teen...
True, Dave didn't hit his stride for the first few years, but his off-kilter guests used to be just the best...he was really doing a Steve Allen thing early on...and of course he innovated as well... |

"running a stop sign and driving without a license" http://crime.about.com/od/famousdidu.../gatesbill.htm running a stop sign! what a spaz, ha ha ha. i hope he has a chauffeur now. |
bill gates ttly would get arrested for something like running a stop sign.
what a badass. |
![]() look at this sexy beast |
white collar crime paid off in his case...good that he's being charitable nowadays though...
Redmond is extemely dull and boring and as cookie-cutter as any place I've ever visited Quote:
I can't imagine it being very good, just as I can't imagine Conan being as good hosting The Tonight Show... seems just wrong that Dave won't get to host The Tonight Show ever... seems like Dave might be trying to groom Adam Sandler as his eventual replacement, but then again Sandler still has a movie career... as we know, Fallon's never took off (& perhaps rightfully so) |
