classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 34: descendents - milo goes to college
![]() DESCENDENTS "MILO GOES TO COLLEGE" 1982, New Alliance If I were a professional music critic, I'd say, "Perfect pop punk portrait of pure teenage angst." But since I'm not, I'll just say this album makes me really happy. It's a perfect blend of poppy vocal hooks and speedy hardcore guitar thrashing. Says more in 22 minutes than most bands say in a whole discography -- and it's all delightfully fun and a bit lame, of course, which makes it even more fun. A very intelligent band making brilliant and complex punk with 15 songs, only one of which is over 2 minutes. Essential!! |

|
I'M A BOY AND NOT A TOY
I will kill and I will DESTROYYYYY |
the last couple of songs are kinda sappy but it's still a great album.
"i want to shit in the woods, in my cave hunt my prey, could be you, i want to have food". "i'm not a punk" has some of the best punk lyrics ever. |
I really like "statue of liberty". Great song... there's this instrumental part right after the choruses that always gets me.
Obviously, this band got worse and worse with each passing album, but they still have some decent stuff.. in fact, as I kinda noted above, some of their stuff is shockingly complex in a way... |
You think live is really hard when your daddy wont buy you a brand new car. Take a girl out, she wont fuck you. You just bought her a glamour coat SPENT ALL YOUR MONEY ON A SHITTY COAT!!!!
|
"I want to be stereotyped
I want to be classified" "I wanna be a statistic!" |
Quote:
coke, not coat. I dont think many punks could relate to buying a girl an expensive coat, but getting shitty coke? Man, thats universal. |
i have spent so much time trying to play bass fast enough to play noage.

i am ashamed to say, i have this album for years and listened to it once and never bothered to return to it.. i dont even know if i still have it or not.....
id actually forgotten about it until i saw this thread........ i will search in my boxes of cds in the attic that havent seen the light of day since the last time the light of day shone on them.... |
i like 'i dont want to grow up' as much as this
|
Milo Goes To College/Two Things at Once is easily in my top 10 favorite albums ever. It will forever be linked to the times when I was 14-15 and being beligerent with my friends.
Yeah, Statue of Liberty is great.....my band used to play that way back in the day. The "do do do do do do" part with the bass and drums is classic. "I've got enough fish on the back of my boat.....huh huh." |
yes.

Milo Goes to College is the epitome of pop punk. It also has some of the finest drum work in the history of the genre. Descendents were so underrated because quite honestly, they didn't write serious punk records about serious shit. In this way, they are a great precursor to Nirvana, who seemed to have more fun in music than any band in the past 30 years. Songs like "I am not a loser" and "I wanna be a bear" as well as "Suburban Home" and the epic street punk ballad "Hope" are all-time great tunes. Descendents were one of the first true punk bands I got into when I was a kid, and they heavily influenced what I like about punk (speed, drumwork, gutteral growls and shouting, a "who the fuck cares" attitude and approach) music... We'll miss you atsonicpark, and all the great discussions about actual music you started. |
the last four tracks or so on this album are the best shit ever.
