Bleakest album ever?

John Frusciante - Smile From The Streets You Hold

Go listen to it :)

Might as well download it, you can't get it anymore...

atsonicpark 07.15.2008 05:14 PM

i'll check it out.

jandek's bass albums are pretty bleak...

Danny Himself 07.15.2008 05:21 PM

"I prayed heaven today bring it's hammer down on me".

OR

"I am completely alone at a table of friends. I feel nothing for them. Nothing."

This is beyond bleak, this is "I'm so depressed and strung out on drugs, and the only thing I have left is a guitar" bleak.

It's just so amazing how he's able to portray his feelings so accurately. A lot of people think the album is a joke though.

wigrid - die asche eines lebens

DJ Rick 07.15.2008 07:12 PM

There was a band called Bleak who made an album of gothy coldwave about 14 years ago called "The Weather Vane" which is actually kinda cool despite being gothy coldwave and rather overbearing.

But I don't think anything can really hold a candle so devoid of light that it could be bleaker than the latest Brainbombs singles collection. That song "Stinking Memory" is so filthy and scarring.

Dead-Air 07.15.2008 11:10 PM

I still think Berlin by Lou Reed holds up perfectly. I absolutely love that records, and yet can only listen to it through once every couple of years.

Yeah that whole album is pretty depressing. I think Fevers & Mirrors is sadder, though.

"And they made me a necklace, hanging beads of sweat on a string of my regrets, and placed it round my neck and they were singing, 'Don’t you do what you’ve wanted to. Don’t destroy yourself like those cowards do. And maybe the sun keeps coming up because it has gotten used to you and your constant need for proof.'”

Everything - Teenage Jesus and the Jerks

Sonic Youth 37 07.15.2008 11:21 PM

Both the Joy Division albums might go here. Bright Eyes is right.

Okay, I've found my winner. Chorus by lovesliescrushing. The album sounds like the howling wind in the pitch black and frigid Arctic with no one around for a thousand miles. All you have is your thoughts.
This album honestly never gets beyond a crawl, all the songs sound almost the same, the vocals are nearly inaudible and totally indecipherable, and the instrumentation is just shy of being the literal embodiment of a tidal-wave of sound.

Rob Instigator 07.15.2008 11:44 PM

I will go with

CODEINE
FRIGID STARS LP

i think the universe is ending when I listen to it

Death & the Maiden 07.16.2008 01:12 AM

The Cure - Pornography
Everyone says Disintegration is so depressing, but it has so many nice, uplifting melodies.

In addition to that..

Frusciante's Niandra La Des and Usually Just a T-Shirt, Elliott Smith's From A Basement on the Hill, maybe In Utero as well.

Albums that sound like someone going downhill.

acousticrock87 07.16.2008 02:10 AM

I got F#A# pretty recently, about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I've listened to it twice, both times in my car, and passed an ambulence at the exact same part both times (somewhere around the Drugs in Tokyo section). That album scares me.

_slavo_ 07.16.2008 02:13 AM

I don't see Godspeed as being bleak and all that. To me, their music has always been filled with hope.

acousticrock87 07.16.2008 02:15 AM

I can definitely see that. But for the most part, it's a very lonely path.

Ohh nice one.

pantophobia 07.16.2008 04:15 AM

i find that Cat Power's Moon Pix extremely bleak, while at the same time kinda encouraging

Alice in Chains' Dirt is ultra bleak, the sound of heroin

atsonicpark 07.16.2008 04:22 AM

frigid stars by codeine is so good.

greedrex 07.16.2008 06:55 AM

bleaker than bleak
here is an excerpt :
"EVERYBODY DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES"

powerful, yet fucking bleak, to say the least.
musically excellent
i don't listen to this anymore
i was a great Sepultura and Obituary fan back in the early 90's though.
killer
might spin this nasty gonzo laters today

Bleakest album of them all. Puts your Jandeks, Sunns, and Godpspeeds to shame in that department.

Derek 07.16.2008 07:18 AM

You guys haven't obviously heard the album I talked about in the first post ;)

super_charger 07.16.2008 07:24 AM

Songs: Ohia 'Ghost Tropic' is pretty much a downer as well.

True. In 'A Spindle, A Darkness, A Fever And A Necklace' the recording of that kid trying to read the storybook is sometimes too suffocatingly sad to even listen to.

noisereductions 07.16.2008 09:07 AM

sarramkrop 07.16.2008 09:08 AM

Beck is suffocatingly sad and depressing for all the wrong reasons.

Well I can hear hope on Lift Yr Skinny... and Yanqui UXO, but not on F#A#. I think that album is a perfectly describing a pre or post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

Hmm... it may sound dull but I think it would fit perfectly in the second part of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, you know when you get out of the temple and you see the mountain surrounded by a big red ring behind you...

i agree on the bleakness, however i find it quite listenable and play it somewhat often

johnnywinternoshow 07.16.2008 09:43 AM

Cat Power's covers album. Such a dirge, massively depressing.

these two i endorse.

---

codeine i like a lot but i don't find them bleak at all.

are we talking about albums with bleak lyrical themes or bleak music or bleak everything? because most of the albums on this list don't seem bleak at all to me.

Glice 07.16.2008 11:00 AM

Down from Dover

Though I could name a million country songs...

batreleaser 07.16.2008 03:07 PM

i wonder is pantophobia has done heroin to know what it sounds like. as someone who has done it, i will tell you what it sounds like, nothing. thats the best description of the drug i can give you, it feels like absolutley nothing.

MellySingsDoom 07.16.2008 03:10 PM

Skip Spence's "Oar" I find pretty harrowing - a great album too.
