I've been obsessed with them for a really long time.

A Promise and The Airforce are my fav albums. I haven't heard Women as lovers but I've heard some stuff from the album on myspace and it wasn't exactly mindblowing.

I think they get worse with every album and the last time I saw them live they were terrible. I really enjoyed knife play when it came out and LOVED a promise when it came out.. one of my favorites of that year... but they just really kind of bore me now.

Not a bad band but definitely an uninteresting one to me at this point. You could do worse.

I really need to get Knife Play ASAP to see what the fuzz is all about.

oh, and xiu xiu: the sent down girl is one of the best films I've ever seen.

Let me put it like this: Xiu Xiu will never write another song as good as "Hives Hives" (off of knife play) again.. which is perhaps why they're not that interesting to me anymore.

Okay this thread made me fall in love with Xiu Xiu once again.

I like everything they've done except for the last one, and I especially love the first two. I'm seeing them on my birthday next month. Real psyched for that.

women as lovers is pretty unmemorable, i think; that's the problem.

i have this theory, every two albums they do a good one like (from when i started listening to them) fabulous muscles is great, la foret not that much, then the air force is fucking fantastic and women as lovers is very mediocre.

i also think they have never done an excellent album, great stuff but all of their releases have duds and filler.

xiu xiu are FANTASTIC live and jamie stewart is both my husband and so sweet and funny in his emails.

personally, i like women as lovers because it's poppy (almost) and sometimes i just want to listen to xiu xiu without feeling like killing myself, you know? i know it's not amazing or mindblowing, but hey, greg saunier! i agree with every-e, though, for every "hives hives" there's that dreadful pussycat dolls cover.

What Xiu Xiu release should I check out after Knife Play?

i'm pretty sure he produced women as lovers as well, but my cd is in my suitcase and i can't get to it. the air force is a fun cd, one of my xiu xiu favorites.

I've never listened to Xiu Xiu. No reason, I just haven't picked up/downloaded any of there stuff. Perhaps I might, but I've said this a dozen times before.

Probably best to go in chronological order from there.

I love Xiu Xiu, but was pretty dissapointed in Women as Lovers. I just found it to be kinda boring. I couldn't get into it at all.

I was listening to IBOPA the other day. Haven't listened to much Xiu Xiu.

autistic daughters is a really good band if you want odd fractured melancholy avant poppy stuff that references noise and electronic and other sounds and genres..

what's a good place to start with them?

They're okay. Their "sensitive" stuff is a bit too quiet and sparse for me, but the noisy stuff is fine.

I have 4 or 5 albums and several 7" singles.

Their new one is great too, just a bit less cacophonic.

th new CD came (500 of them) with a DVD containing tour footage and about 15 xiu xiu videos!

live ive said before, i dont why people hate women as lvoers so much, i think its as great as anything theyve done. la foret is the ebst though. anyways, i love them. jamie stewart's lyrics are beautful, and i lvoe their noisy experimental avant garde meets the smiths sound. anyone gonna see them with prurient?

I've said it a million times, they're one of my favourite bands of all time. Knife Play is one of the best albums evereverever, I fucking love all off their albums, Air Force RUUULES, Women As Lovers was awesome, and like Jade said, it's great for Xiu Xiu without wanting to commit Xiuicide.

Well yeah. Xiu Xiu might be one of my favourite bands ever but also one of the ones how can get on my nerves. And the lyrics at times are just to attention seeking but on the other hand their sound is unique, Jamie's lyrics are mostly great and I think A Promise has to be one of my most played cd's.

I find Chapel of the Chimes horrible, it feels like a knife slowing going through my brain. It's the kind of stuff that makes me hate music, it just sounds horrible and Ceremony has to be the worst cover ever. It's a wonder I took the guess after that to listen to more of their stuff. But then I find Knife Play a great record even it took me a long time to get into it's 'vibe'.

A Promise has to my favourite release by it and I am 'lucky'(just look at the cover if your not familiar with it) that I own it on CD and Vinyl. From it's haunting start of the wonderful tearjerker Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl to the noisy emotion filled screamfest that is Ian Curtis Wishlist it's one of my favourite albums ever.

Fabulous Muscles is a bit overrated, but still a great record. I Luv the Valley OH! is mine all time favourite xiu xiu song but for the rest the album just misses the atmosphere A Promise had.

I feel bad because I still haven't heard La Forêt.

The Air Force is a bit more poppier album, which is a dangerous word in the context of Xiu Xiu. It's easy listing Xiu Xiu, the songs sound like their all finished(which isn't the case on their previous albums but still helped the charm of their earlier work). It's my second favorite record by them, lyric mostly.

I found Women as Lovers a great record and it was in my top ten of 2008. Again the sound is a bit more songbased/poppier but it's still the Xiu Xiu feeling all over again. The cover of Under Pressure isn't bad but should have been left off the album. It just doesn't fit so good on it. But still Black Keyboard is one of the most haunting songs I know and the cover art was/is again amazing.

I am really looking forward to Dear God, I Hate Myself(even the title is bloody awful) and might finally see them live.

I think this band keeps getting worse, especially live. I've seen them 3 times, and their last show was this total boring rock-fest with distorted guitars and crazy drums. What happened?... Also, didn't Jamie's cousin leave? Blah. She was amazing. I just think as their music gets "fuller" (and more "respectable" maybe?), it loses what attracted me to them in the first place. No problem with a band wanting to branch out, obviously, but they've lost something. Still has created some exceptional and genuinely unique and great songs. It's nice to see bands like this achieving any kind of success, so I will continue to support them in some way.

Yeah. If you look at footage wen she was still in the band(she is now in cold cave) it just sounds better/fuller. Even she still was on the latest album I don't know really, my favorites were A Promise/Air Force but Woman As Lovers remians a really strong album in my opion. But yeah, that's also a problem with having a band without a steady line up.

I've only heard Knife Play, but it's fantastic. Really really gucking good and easily one of the best records of that year. I've been meaning to listen to some other albums by them, but you all know how it is, it haven't happened yet. But I will! A Promise will probably be next.
