The official SY Gossip Ten Greatest Albums of All-Time
OK, seeing as how we all have amazing taste compared to everyone else, here's how it can work.
1. PM me your top five 'greatest' albums, in order. 2. I'll give them points accordingly: 8 points for no.1; 6 for no.2; 3 for no.3; 2 for no.4; and 1 for number 5. 3. I'll add them all up and then post the final top ten here, say next friday. I'm off work right now so it's no big deal for me to do this, and it could be interesting. The only rule is that it has to be albums (no singles). Oh, and no resubmitting or amending. Once it's in, it's in. |
done, good sir
|
done as well.
I'm guessing everyone's favorites will be spiderland and daydream nation and kid a and double nickels on the dime and.. uh.. I dunno, BUG or something.. I hope I'm not right. I want to be shocked! |
done. kid a included in my list as well.
|
I'll keep bumping the thread from time to time just so everyone knows about it.
|
Oh I didn't put Kid A in mine. I was just guessing the overall top 5. But then I realized this is going to be a top 10 overall. So nevermind what I said.
|
I've had six in so far. surprised at how many of you still listen to Gish!
SEND MORE! |
Done and done.

you probably picked 5 unlistenable lathe cut platters |
As I mentioned in my PM, I went for records that are in my all-time list, but also records that other people may vote for. I'm not going to try and influence anyone, but if Herrs Neurotic and Park don't vote for ATR, I will slash the arteries in their thighs.
|
haha.
START THE RIOT! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
1. captain beefheart-trout mask replica
2. sun ra-supersonic jazz 3. the velvet underground-white light white heat 4. iannis xenakis-metastasis 5. john fahey-the transfiguration of blind joe death 6. the stooges-fun house 7. albert ayler-spiritual unity 8. can-ege bamyasi 9. magma-mekanik kommandoh 10. black flag-damaged/sun city girls-torch of the mystics my top 10 changes all the time though |
In all seriousness, we're not gonna get too far with this if people pick ultra obscure records (which thankfully most of you haven't).
Keep 'em coming ladies and gents. |
o shit sorry didnt even read the guidelines
|
Right, I purposefully left out some of my obscure favorites. Also, as I was telling demonrail, I picked Trout Mask, even though it's by far not my favorite Beefheart... but it is probably the greatest. I tried to look at this as slightly different than my "personal top 5" and more as a "what is the BEST top 5".. if that makes sense. Oh, it doesn't? Okay.
|
I'm struggling with this. Top five artists would be easier for me.
Maybe I'll pick my top five artists and then pick my favourite album of their's. Thanks for listening. |
Well, it's all looking very interesting at the moment and so far looks like a fairly credible list.
Keep them coming in though. |

I also predict a list not disimilar to the NME one. I really should stop thinking about this so much. |
Well, on one hand, not choosing things because they're too obscure might defeat the point of this list. On the other hand, this isn't really us saying "these are 10 greatest albums of all time" (despite what the title of the thread says), this is us saying "These are 10 albums almost all of us can all agree are great".. so that's how I tried to look at it.
|
The danger is that we just get a load of albums with one vote, which would just mean nothing. i will say that so far the top five atleast is fairly representative of the general taste of members here. Some of you may not like it but it certainly reflects what I think is the taste of a majority of posters here. I think you need to be realistic when posting your top five, but aslo honest. There's no point in choosing stuff you think is gonna figure highly if you don't think it ought to, then it really will be a waste of time. But like i say, the way it's looking so far is surprisingly coherent.
BUT WE NEED MORE LISTS. |
Right.
There's no point in being too obscure... because even when not being obscure that leaves hundreds of albums that are still great. If something's really honestly without a shadow of a doubt your favorite album and it's pretty obscure then I'd say to list it, but I tried to look at as, "Okay, I like GASTR DEL SOL's 'upgrade and afterlife' better than Spiderland -- but Spiderland was probably a 'greater' album." So, yea. |
Remember To Pm Me Your Top Five 'greatest' Albums Of All Time If You Haven't Already Done So.
|
pm Demonrail666 Your Top 5:)
|
I've done mine. For the record, I've left out my actual favourite album of all time because there is nil chance of anybody else voting for it. So it's four white rock bands and a token jazz artist from me.
|
what's your favorite album of all time?
|
out of interest Pookie, include your fave of all time. I'm gonna do an 'honourary mention' list after posting the top ten.
|
Done !
|
oh, hey, my favorite of all time is john fahey - god, time, and casualty then
if you're doing honorary mentions |
My favourite of all time:
![]() And I should have put the Slits in:( . |
Hrm. Five?
Let me see if I can throw something together real quick. I'll probably be pissed at my 2-5 choices later, but my #1 is very secure. |
Fin. :7)

You might have been surprised. I know one poster so far who included it on their list. |
Done dun...
|
my cigarette died when i washed my face
|
Excellent thread. Well done, sir.

Totally seconded... |
My favorite album is the first one in my sig, but I didn't put it in my top five.
|
I don't see any reason why the results have to wait as late as next Friday. I'll see how many responses I get over the weekend and maybe post them up on Tuesday or something. Then I'm going to the union for a pay rise. This is far harder work than I envisaged!
Anyway, KEEP PM-ING ME THOSE TOP FIVES, (unless you want 'It's a Shame About Ray' sneaking in via the back door!) |
You should have asked people to pay in order to contribute.
