Bands whose albums you buy more out of habit these days.

I own all the Sonic Youth albums, but I keep up more out of habit these days. I'm the same with anything done by Jon Spencer. I got the last Heavy Trash album, aware that it'd probably be shit (I was right) but deep down I know that I'll get the next one, and the next. If that fucker had something like a loyalty card I'm sure I'd have enough airmiles to take me around the world a few times over.

batreleaser 08.02.2008 02:52 PM

i get what youre saying. i have some bands like that. wenever i see something by the fall i dont own, i buy it. same thing with all wu tang clan members.

acousticrock87 08.02.2008 03:03 PM

I can't think of any, but usually when I get really into a band for a few albums they've released I'll go out and try to get everything they've done. Usually I'll only get halfway through and then find something better to spend my money on, but it leaves me with a ton of albums I wouldn't normally buy.

demonrail666 08.02.2008 03:05 PM

i will be any new album by The Fall, but unlike with Jon Spencer or Sonic Youth, I do have a certain fascination to see what they'll do next.

pbradley 08.02.2008 03:12 PM

Tom Waits and R.E.M. come to mind for me.

radarmaker 08.02.2008 05:39 PM

Mudhoney are the first & only ones that spring to mind.

Yes. Definately.

Also:
Bright Eyes
Sonic Youth
Flaming Lips
Modest Mouse

I pretty much buy any new album I see buy a band I'm into without knowing anything about it.

acousticrock87 08.02.2008 06:12 PM

Bright Eyes, yes. But so far there haven't been any bad ones. Maybe Noise Floor.

Beck. Nine Inch Nails. Wilco.

drrrtyboots 08.02.2008 09:30 PM

Sonic Youth, Animal Collective and Yo La Tengo are all ones my wallet can never say no to.

viewtiful_alan 08.02.2008 09:33 PM

Nine Inch Nails always wind up in my collection on the day of release.
Luckily I haven't really been dissapointed yet, so it isn't a habit I need to break.

acousticrock87 08.02.2008 09:35 PM

I waited too long, and when I got to Best Buy today The Slip was back up to $22. Fuck.

viewtiful_alan 08.02.2008 09:36 PM

Haha sucks man. : /
The dvd it comes with is really good.
You can always go on ebay or amazon and pick up a used copy im sure..?

acousticrock87 08.02.2008 09:38 PM

I'll get it eventually one way or another. I think I just don't feel rushed cause I've had it for so long already. Ghosts I bought immediately before I heard it, but that wasn't even an option here.

viewtiful_alan 08.02.2008 09:47 PM

Ghosts was amazing.
ANd surprisingly enough it didn't feel bloated either.

Pookie 08.03.2008 05:04 AM

None anymore for me, but loads in the past: Sonic Youth, Ramones, Meat Puppets, and quite a few more.

I had every Ramones album at one point, but have whittled that down to oe now!

I had every Black Flag record, despite their quality deteriorating rapidly after Damaged.

PAULYBEE2656 08.03.2008 05:36 AM

Haha I have all ramones except for one or two live ones.
And I can find something I like about all the flag albums.

greedrex 08.03.2008 02:11 PM

I have to say, with the exception of perhaps the last couple of albums, there are at least two or three really good tracks on each Ramones record. Unfortunately for the majority of the post-Too Tough To Die albums, no more than two or three.

Same probably goes for Black Flag. But then again they released about eight albums in two years so quality was bound to fluctuate.

Semperet 08.03.2008 02:53 PM

Acid Mothers Temple. It's why I don't live in a freakin mansion with platinum taps on my alabaster sculpted, Yquem filled bathtubs.

sarramkrop 08.03.2008 02:56 PM

It used to be Sonic Youth but that's gone now. I'll be downlaoding them all illegally 'cause there are more chances that they will be rubbish. I'd rather spend my money on other records.

punkaspoo 08.04.2008 03:32 AM

pearl jam

Death & the Maiden 08.04.2008 04:36 AM

I think the closest I came to buying music out of habit, rather than because I genuinely expected to hear something worthwhole, was with the Ramones a few years ago. I was buying albums like Animal Boy and Loco Live because I could, not because I wanted to.

The thing for me with SY is that I stopped 'liking' what they were putting out a while ago - although Nurse and Rather Ripped were definite low points. Saying that, I'll keep buying their stuff, although from now on it'll be more out of an interest in how they see themselves at a given time. I think Rather Ripped is an awful album, but it sort of fascinates me nonetheless - in some ways more than those of theirs I like.

I have the same thing with Rolling Stones albums, which I always buy when they come out. A Different Light, for example, was never going to be a 'good' album, but what interests me is how they envisage themselves, and how they articulate that vision through their albums - however bad it may be. It's the exact same reason why I'm probably the only person in the world whose still vaguely excited about the eventual(?) release of Chinese Democracy.

hansjoakim 08.04.2008 04:59 AM

interesting thread!

although i'm not always enthralled by their latest records, i'd buy anything from the likes of sonic youth, malk & the jicks and modest mouse.

anything released by liars, joanna newsom, tom waits are also bought without blinking an eye. there are probably more!

leakyheadboy 08.04.2008 05:10 AM

i have every cure album to date and it is definitely a case of more bad then good... they haven't done anything interesting for a while... however i shall buy their 13th in october regardless..... this boy is a sucker

gmku 08.04.2008 04:52 PM

Not anymore but used to be I'd mindlessly buy the following whether I really wanted them or not: Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Stones (a long time ago including their solo releases).

Phlegmscope 08.04.2008 07:41 PM

SY, if there's one, but I don't go after out of print shit or feel obliged to buy every SYR album etc.
The lack of money is pretty defining factor with this sort of stuff.

Rob Instigator 08.04.2008 07:50 PM

i mindlessly buy anything my favorite bands put out
sonic youth
dinosaur
sebadoh

sarramkrop 08.04.2008 09:20 PM

Sabadoh put a record out every 10 years.

demonrail666 08.04.2008 09:27 PM

Is that to give people time to forget how awful the last one was?

HECKLER SPRAY 08.05.2008 05:54 AM

^^That's not very kind.^^
Have you ever listened to their albums ?

Absolutely not!

Exactly. But I'm willing to bet you never had to hear them to know that. I do admire your willingness to test the theory though.

Pookie 08.05.2008 06:26 AM

I had no choice. I used to live with a fan.

demonrail666 08.05.2008 06:28 AM

I was forced to buy a fan last week, as humidity levels reached silly levels. Never made me listen to Sebadoh though.

Kosako 08.05.2008 07:29 AM

I only buy Sonic Youth albums and is the only band that keeps me searching for rare stuff or SYR or bootleg. All others bands are just fine... and I don't buy anything, I download it all. There's a lot of info on the net, so I take advantage of it.
