Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

I've never owned this album but I just found it at GoodWill for 2 bucks. I'm enjoying it. I've never been much of a Malkmus fan.

Rob Instigator 08.06.2008 05:04 PM

malkmus alone is boring pseudo country clap trap

alkmus and spiral stairs and the other fellas of pavement on crooked rain? BIG WIN!!!!!

Rob Instigator 08.06.2008 05:05 PM

I'd like to invite you to taste of my chalice
it's a special one
it's made of gold....

batreleaser 08.06.2008 05:05 PM

this is actually one of my least favorite pavement albums. its very mainstream sounding, and ive always like my pavement lo fi (slanted and enchanted) and sorta stoned (wowee zowee) out likes.

HaydenAsche 08.06.2008 05:07 PM

Slanted and Enchanted I listened to like 3 times and never put on again. It just wasn't something I thought was that great. I'm enjoying this much more, though.

evollove 08.06.2008 06:28 PM

No no no. It's: a career. Careera. Coreera. KOREA.

Love this album.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 08.06.2008 06:44 PM

Gold Soundz was an instant favorite.

i know, i just couldn't be bothered remembering the many different words he sings with those syllables

Everyneurotic 08.06.2008 07:09 PM

i love it, pop rock awesomeness.

dazedcola 08.06.2008 07:27 PM

Before getting this record i was fed hype that this is their best, most mature album where Pavement really stepped into their own light.

After hearing it i was kinda let down. It's got some goods on it "silence kit", "range life", "cut your hair" and "unfair" but Slanted and Enchanted will always remain my favorite.

Crooked Rain's great. Every song is different and awesome. Pretty much perfect songwriting; "Gold Soundz" is one of the best songs ever written. The last minutes of "Stop Breathing" are perfect too.

So many great moments on this album...

I need to sleep...
I NEED TO SLEEP
WHY WON'T YOU LET ME

Of course, my favorite song (and probably the best Pavement song) is "Neward Wilder".

Definitely essential.

atari 2600 08.06.2008 09:25 PM

As an album, it's probably their best one in my mind. Wowee Zowee is right up there neck-and-neck with it. I also like Slanted & Enchanted and Brighten the Corners a good bit. I like the L.A. Desert Origins reissue of it lots.

atsonicpark 08.06.2008 09:57 PM

I love Westing, Slanted, this, and Wowee. The other two bore me.

!@#$%! 08.06.2008 10:51 PM

i hate pavement. it's true.

Rob Instigator 08.07.2008 08:42 AM

starlings in the slipstream fucking rules all

and it is JUST ROCK people! melodies do not make it POP! shit!

_slavo_ 08.07.2008 08:49 AM

go back
to the GOLD SOUNDZ

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 08:50 AM

Nah, the early stuff definitely doesn't rock at all; it's definitely noise pop.

I think they kinda have "country rock" vibes sometimes.

But yeah they are the kings of good melody either way.

Danny Himself 08.07.2008 08:52 AM

NEWARK WILDER IS THE BEST PAVEMENT SONG
fuck

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 08:54 AM

I already said that.

Danny Himself 08.07.2008 08:55 AM

Oh. Well, still.

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 08:56 AM

I'd also like to say that "Gold Soundz" is one of those songs I've put on every mix tape I ever made for a girl...

I also put "Car" by Built to Spill on many mix tapes. That song's awesome.

Rob Instigator 08.07.2008 09:25 AM

car is awesome.

I love texas never whispers by the pavement

don;t hold yr breath too long, this tunnel is a texas mile

plus I love gangsters and pranksters!!!

I got all this harvard LSD why won't anybody touch me?

and as far as the whole pop/rock thing, if you think pavement even at their most melodic is pop and not rock you shoudl play it for people who actually only listen to radio friendly rock and pop and they will tell you, as they have told me countless of times, that they find nothing POP in pave, ent at all, and frankly cannot stand it cuz it is so NOT poppy!

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 09:27 AM

Eh?

It has all the characteristics of pop.... and it definitely doesn't ever rock out, that's all I'm saying. So, it's more pop than rock if there's any argument here. But sure I see what you're saying.

HECKLER SPRAY 08.07.2008 09:28 AM

Yeah, Gold Soundz is their best.
The guitar solo is simply... magical.
The video clip is awesome too.

HECKLER SPRAY 08.07.2008 09:33 AM

Why do you say it doesn't rock out ? Because the guitars don't sound that heavy ? Because of the singing ?
Well, I don't know. They're still a rock band for me.

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 09:39 AM

I guess you're right, it is "alternative rock" of course. I was just responding to Rob who said it's "JUST ROCK people" or whatever. I guess I do generally equate rock music in general with heavy guitars and such, yeah.

Like, I wouldn't really describe.. oh... My Bloody Valentine (for a lack of a better example)... as a rock band. But they have all the elements that Pavement has I guess. I dunno.

Fuck it, it doesn't matter.

Danny Himself 08.07.2008 09:53 AM

JMC Retro is the second best Pavement song ever.

HECKLER SPRAY 08.07.2008 09:59 AM

Ah ah ah, are you sure, Danny ? It 's not really a song, no ?

Danny Himself 08.07.2008 10:00 AM

I am sure!

atsonicpark 08.07.2008 10:02 AM

My second favorite is probably "You're Killing Me".

Rob Instigator 08.07.2008 12:32 PM

elevate me later goddamnit!!!!

the ikara cult 08.07.2008 02:37 PM

The 2cd version of this is very worth paying the money for.

Wow, that was amazingly bad grammar, so bad im leaving it in.

Danny Himself 08.07.2008 02:37 PM

Dudes its clearly "Pueblo (Beach Boys)". :D

It's now a competition to name the most esoteric Pavement track out there!
