What's all the fuss over High Places?

It's quaint and atmospheric. I'm not saying they're bad. But every song on the album pretty much sounds the same. Why are critics going nuts over this?

al shabbray 08.11.2008 09:04 AM

high places?
whats that?

gmku 08.11.2008 09:07 AM

Apparently there isn't any fuss? I've never heard of them either.

drrrtyboots 08.11.2008 09:22 AM

They're one of the "hype brooklyn" bands getting a lot of attention, starting with Pitchfork which causes a lot of other internet sites to hype them up which then leads to the magazines etc. They're a fun band, pretty decent live but probably not worth the hype.

noisereductions 08.11.2008 09:58 AM

Well they were first hyped by eMusic when eMu released their singles collection as part of their new series of hype-worthy bands. THEN pfork gave them the BEST NEW MUSIC tag. Most reviews that followed praised them, including an EDITORS PICK tag from Allmusic. Etc etc.

thanks for clearing that up. I havent received the hype yet

noisereductions 08.11.2008 10:17 AM

Be on the lookout.

batreleaser 08.11.2008 11:20 AM

all these fucking bands, high places, fleet foxes, all jumping onto the 'new wierd america' whatever fuckin scene about 7 years too late. and they all are boring as fuck. these type of bands bug me so much; pitchfork says theyre cool and then every nerdy fucking hipster sees them in the best new music section and claims to love them. it seems like all these bands are trying to be animal collective, only problem is, the animal collective is great, these bands suck hard hard hard. fuck em.

Alex's Trip 08.11.2008 12:39 PM

You guys are way too concerned with reviews, hype, etc...

I like this band. But I don't know about their review status. I clicked around through bands friend lists and wound up on their site.

Derek 08.11.2008 12:40 PM

it's okay to like them but generally most music hyped up is extremely mediocre.

Rob Instigator 08.11.2008 12:42 PM

animal collective is pretty humdrum as well man

every spin that their records get at casa instigator is less enjoyable by the week.

me duermo!!!!

what happened to ROCK?????

gmku 08.11.2008 12:45 PM

I bought Feels because I gave in to all the hype, and yeah, I never got it, even after a lot of spins, and it still leaves me cold. They just make me go, "wtf...."

It has some pretty farout artwork, though.

noisereductions 08.11.2008 12:57 PM

I dont CARE about hype at all. What I'm asking is, WHY are High Places getting attention? And since brought up, why are Fleet Foxes getting attention? I just don't hear a quality in their music that makes me want to replay the record.

noisereductions 08.11.2008 01:00 PM

And Animal Collective actually is really really great.

Derek 08.11.2008 01:56 PM

yeah Animal Collective rule, they deserve the hype

noisereductions 08.11.2008 01:59 PM

The reason being that Animal Collective actually make interesting records, that have incredible melodies, and each album sounds different! They explore everything from noise, to folk to electronics to whatever.

Back to what I originally said about High Places-- every song on the album (or singles collection, whatever) sounds like the same song to me!

SYRFox 08.11.2008 02:33 PM

Animal Collective are great great great
Fleet Foxes suck hard

About High Places... yeah, they certainly do not deserve all this fuss (and they're now signed on Thrill Jockey, WHAT?). Their single compilations was not bad, it had a few very good tunes, but it mostly sounded all the same and the instrumentations were not very interesting. I hope their new album will be better, that "Golden" track is really good.

SuperCreep 08.11.2008 02:42 PM

Animal Collective are alright. I do agree with batreleaser that all of these derivative bands are very dull.

I've never heard High Places (yet), but if they're anything like Fleet Foxes, I'm staying the fuck away.

SYRFox 08.11.2008 02:50 PM

No, High Places have nothing to do with Fleet Foxes. They're more in a kind of uh, electronic thingy, with female vocals.

noisereductions 08.11.2008 03:14 PM

Yeah, 2 totally different sounding bands.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 08.11.2008 03:32 PM

Animal Collective is amazing

batreleaser 08.11.2008 08:04 PM

i cant wait for the new record. in some interview they said its very influenced by panda's record, that can only be good.

Rob Instigator 08.11.2008 09:03 PM

i wanna hear different emotions than what they put in my ears

dionysusundone 08.11.2008 11:37 PM

I remember listening to High Places when Bradford Cox was hyping them months ago, I wasn't impressed then and I'm not interested enough to check them out again now.
I thought Fleet Foxes were a My Morning Jacket type ripoff band, not so?

Whatever.

All those 13/14 new songs they played live were really good. I'm particulary fan of Song For Ariel, Grace, I hope they'll be on the record. Of course Bearhug and Brother Sport are obvious singles. But I read an interview were they said there will only be 10 tracks on it :( it probably means they'll have an EP after that, like Water Curses for Strawberry Jam

SYRFox 08.12.2008 04:27 AM

And Fleet Foxes is more a rip off of hippie folk shitty sauce.

noisereductions 08.12.2008 07:13 AM

I think My Morning Jacket is crap too.

thats awesome. i havnt seen them since october, and all they played was 'strawberry jam' stuff and the classics. still a great show though. panda and avey tare have two of the most beautiful dude voices in the whole world.

noisereductions 08.12.2008 02:04 PM

I've been listening to the PEOPLE EP over and over this week. Sooo good.

noisereductions 08.12.2008 02:05 PM

I wonder if that LP boxset of unreleased shiz is really gonna come out this year?

SYRFox 08.12.2008 02:41 PM

I don't know. I'm lurkyin' a lot on the Collected Animals board (sometimes posting too) and there's no news at all. - btw it's actually a live boxset!-

Someone mentionned an Australian interview sayin' the new album would be out by December 10th, though! We don't know if it's legit yet...

Well, January apparently...

This Is Not Here 08.12.2008 02:55 PM

I beleive I saw High Places open for Liars a few monthes ago. Not particularly impressive I have to say. Another hype we can thank Pitchfork for.

hoppy poppy 08.12.2008 06:17 PM

Ok, I am new and looking thorough here, and I am totally blown away.

High Places is not hyped, they tour constantly, and play a lot in NY when they are home. They only put our impossible to find 7" records, which only recently was put out by Thrill Jockey. They were local faves before pfork ever found them. AND.... If all these other highly aclaimed musicians/labels dig them, maybe there is something there. Plus they are the most humble and non-pompous people ever. They are basically little kids making pretty out there music, and working very hard at it.

Whether you like them or not, neither High Places or Fleet Foxes sound like AC. Ok so maybe there is delay, or unrecognizable sounds, which AC uses. HP is WAY more rhythm based, almost dance hall at times too. I don't know, backlash is inevitalble, but they don't deserve it IMHO.

SYRFox 10.15.2008 11:03 AM

Okay, I finally checked their first real album yesterday, and I must say I found it really good. Not deserving all that hype but still good. Their single compilation was mostly meh, but this self titled album is good stuff really

Really? Maybe I'll check it. I never said I thought HP was bad or antying. Just the singles comp didnt hold my interest by the midpoint.

Decayed Rhapsody 10.15.2008 08:49 PM

They're nice to listen to on trains. Same thing with Burial's last album, I find that they're only palatable when I'm on some form of public transport.

dionysusundone 10.15.2008 10:24 PM

...I'm embarassed to say I quite enjoy them now. Take that, me of a few months ago!

Yeah the singles comp was mostly boring (Freaked Flight was pretty cool but that's all)

The Burial album took time, but grew on me.
