Should I go and see R.E.M. on Saturday?

So, my best friend keeps blasting me with his idea to travel to Budapest to see R.E.M. and stuff on Sziget festival. Never been into them, never even heard any complete album (with the exception of "Up" which I kinda liked), and my other option is to travel to Prague for the weekend and get shitfaced a couple of times within 48 hours.

So what would you recommend? Are R.E.M. currently worth travelling that far? (around 200 kms)

Get shitfaced a couple times while seeing REM?

MellySingsDoom 08.14.2008 08:34 AM

Go to Prague, _slavo_, REM bores the total shit out of me these days.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 08:55 AM

how much is it?

_slavo_ 08.14.2008 09:13 AM

30 Euro or so.
The money does not bother me that much.
The thing is just that I have the feeling that I need to break the cycle of endless weekend alcoholic city ramblings that have a been pretty stable part of my life in the recent time

Eyebaj 08.14.2008 04:33 PM

Then maybe doing something else would be good? I'd go see R.E.M. but that's me, make a pick and stick with it. Seeing R.e.m. myself within a month and I'm hoping for the best.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 04:37 PM

for 30 euro I would do it too, and if the money doesnt matter...I like road trips too and breaking the habit is, like weve all learned from linkin park, a good thing.
for the sake of linkin park: go watch R.E.M.

blunderbuss 08.14.2008 04:56 PM

R.E.M. haven't been particularly vital for quite some time. It's years since they recorded an album that I've wanted to listen to repeatedly.

I say spend the 30 euros on a couple of decent CDs, a bottle of wine, some bread, and some good cheese, and have a pleasant evening in.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 04:57 PM

I would go to see r.e.m. for their older ones too. the last couple of records sucked in comparison.

Merlot, a baguette and Brie > R.E.M.

I'd like to add some dark chocolate Lindor balls to that meal, as dessert. Dark chocolate + merlot = greatness.

No, it's not. There was some guy did a PhD thesis on it a few years ago (circa Monster, I think), and categorically proved that wine, bread and cheese was greater than R.E.M.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:11 PM

if it wouldnt be midnight and everything here is closed I would go out now and by me exactly that!

blunderbuss 08.14.2008 05:15 PM

Shit, I hadn't realised it was that late. I'm off to bed.

I hope all this has helped Slavo.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:16 PM

he just have to read between the lines...
-insert x-files theme here-

Dang. Just knowing this immediately changed my mind. Put my ticket up for sale already. Guess I'll have to go get some bread in the morning.

al shabbray 08.14.2008 05:19 PM

but monster is my favourite r.e.m. album, or at least top 3

Probably not, as the bread and wine thing wasn't put up as an option in the first place. He's still stuck with his impossible dilemma.

blunderbuss 08.15.2008 06:13 AM

No, I've put forward an alternative. He shouldn't go to see R.E.M., and he shouldn't go out and get hammered, instead he should stay in and have a cheese and wine party. It's what I'd do.

_slavo_ 08.15.2008 06:21 AM

Allright, decision made. I ain't doing shit. It's raining like crazy in this corner of Europe and I'm not in the right mood to be travelling to Prague.
I've cancelled the R.E.M. thing too, my girlfriend is not really keen on that and my friends decided to stay home.
So I'll probably choose the Brie and wine option. And I'll throw in one nice red Peter Wright CD-r in too that I've got for Christmas.
Thanks for advice blunderbuss.

blunderbuss 08.15.2008 06:55 AM

Good choice. Have a splendid evening.
