sonic youth made nearly $500,000 for playing three shows in 2007

what? is that true? how does one know?
i really hope it is! go on youth!
its on pitchfork, in the article about syr 8 (it got praised btw).
here it is

al shabbray 08.16.2008 10:37 AM

wtf?
I dont think so, but maybe I should read it first

al shabbray 08.16.2008 10:39 AM

aaaah Ive already read this. but really did not recognize this huge sum of money. but somehow I dont think so. maybe the whole thing went around that sum, minus all organisation etc.

atsonicpark 08.16.2008 10:39 AM

"yeah! So Don't Download Their Muzak They Need Da Moneyzzz"

Derek 08.16.2008 11:20 AM

In Goodbye 20th Century it said they made $500,000 off the Daydream Nation shows so yes.

al shabbray 08.16.2008 11:22 AM

damn I am short before DDN in goodbUY

Rob Instigator 08.16.2008 11:59 AM

more powerto the youth
remember it probably cost them upwards of 100,000 to get all their gear and themselvesand their families and their crew to the shows across the ocean

al shabbray 08.16.2008 12:02 PM

eah maybe they made 500000 bucks, but what is that in comparison to some real huge bands, like the stones or something...nothing???
also they are 4 people that makes 125000 for everyone

Derek 08.16.2008 12:12 PM

I'm sure Kim and Thurston would share their money, so 250,000 to them

al shabbray 08.16.2008 12:13 PM

but thurston will spend everything for records. so after all nothing for them

SonicBebs 08.16.2008 12:32 PM

maybe he can afford a haircut now then? scruffy git.

or not?

al shabbray 08.16.2008 01:08 PM

do you mean his first or the custom edition made by exhumed enzo personally?

mil_pl 08.16.2008 06:11 PM

his first, he said some time ago that he will buy it. or consider buying it:p

SYRFox 08.16.2008 06:29 PM

Do I give a fuck about what my idols win, no.

reginald 08.16.2008 08:08 PM

It may not be much compared to what the Stones make, as al shabbray mentioned, but holy hell SY only charges about $30-$35 per ticket vs. the Stones $350-$450 price tag !!! RIPOFF !!!!!

I'm so proud that SY can keep their prices so low in this day and age of $80 - $100 tickets !!!!

Weeza goin' to Sizzla.

top 40 squeeze 08.16.2008 08:24 PM

sweet. rock on youth. glad to see they are doing well. now if only we all didn't get boned by ticketmaster to buy tickets. wow, this charge is so convenient!

clever name 08.17.2008 08:35 AM

we no wanty pay, they might consider retiring?

setting up a tour costs money.

al shabbray 08.17.2008 08:56 AM

and even, at least in germany, they keep the venues at a great size of 1000-2000 people. which would be a reason to spend more for a smaller venue. but not neccessary when it comes to the yoof

me too.
But no money to invest= no money to tour outside USA, methinks. shipping tons of equipment over the ocean is no joke.
that said, I'll buy my ticket for Bolzano in 3 days :D

Savage Clone 08.17.2008 01:10 PM

Good for them. They more than deserve to be paid handsomely for their work, especially after so long.

al shabbray 08.17.2008 02:59 PM

SY are the shit!
even if they will poop gold and puke diamonds

mil_pl 08.17.2008 03:57 PM

fucking lickspittle's .

radarmaker 08.17.2008 04:22 PM

I assume it'll be the 3 London DDN shows that they're referring to, no?

Chris Lawrence 08.17.2008 04:57 PM

nope. this article claims it was for the 2 (?) berkeley shows + brooklyn. i assume they mean berkeley and LA DDN shows.

http://www.businesssheet.com/2008/8/...lay-old-albums

i assumed this was the article linked to when i first read the thread. now i see that article doesn't explore the angle that this one does, which is that the DDN shows raked in way more cash than their usual gigs.

nice link, thanks for that

This Is Not Here 08.17.2008 05:06 PM

To be honest I expected they might have made more from the shows. I think the sum refers to the Roundhouse London shows, its a 3000+ venue, so for 3 sold out nights they would make an awful lot really. Roundhouse tickets are always around 20-25, so they weren't exactly ripping people off. Just think how much MBV made, same venue, but 5 sold out nights.

terminal pharmacy 08.17.2008 08:10 PM

$500,000 minus production costs probably leaves them with about $50 each

yeah if we're talking about the overproduced piece of dogshit that is rather ripped.

Chris Lawrence 08.18.2008 12:49 AM

which we're not.

Cantankerous 08.18.2008 12:54 AM

if you break it down probably half that money didn't even go into their (meaning the band members) pockets. which is to be expected, even major label bands don't make shit. or at least it's not nearly all it's cracked up to be.

Three DDN shows at the Roundhouse in London last year. If they all sold out, that's 9,000 tickets. How much did tickets cost? And how much of that did SY get to keep? There's also T-shirt sales to be considered.
