Acid Mothers Temple...
as you might have read in the "what are you listening to?" thread, ive become totally re-obsessed with AMT since yesterday. i had forgotten how absolutley insane they were when they wanted to be, and the fact that while they wear thier influences on their sleeves; stockhausen, pink floyd, ash ra tempel, hendrix, can, etc.. they always sound totally unique. anyways, what are your top AMT recodrings, any format.
for me: 1. electric heavyland (just one of the craziest thing ive ever heard, like i said in the other thread, a stockhausen obsessed jimi hendrix heading a krautorck band that feautres damo suzuki and other like minded individiuals, as well as keiji haino playing rhythm guitar. 2. absolutley freakout (4 long ass songs of exactly that, freaking out) 3. new geocentric world (their best full length i think, theyve always been a band who are best when releasing small eps and such at a time, their full lengths tend to drag, but this one is real good, flows well) 4. 41st century splendid man (prolly just love the king crimson reference) 5. hello acid brothers and sisters |
top? shit! there are so many and most are so different that i can't pick just one or even rank them.
there has been some dross stuff i've heard but those have been like tour only eps of them wanking around in the studio. |
WHISKEY GALS A GO-GO
RECURRING DREAM AND WE ARE ACID MOTHERS AFRIRAMPO AND SOME OF THE MAKOTO PRIVATE TAPES ARE AMONG MY FAVOURITES.... damn caps lock! |

see i agree, but when it comes to acid mothers, i actually LOVE hearing them wank. and theres only a few musicians who i can listen to noodle and show off on thier instruments/(usually) guitars for long periods of time (hendrix, eddie hazel who actually rivaled hendrix for playing ability and made maggot brain which is essentially one loing amazing noodle, john mclaughlin, fahey, bailey, miles davis, coltrane, etc..), but i could listen to kawabata and his band of merry fucking wierdos just jam and make wierd sounds and all sorts of psychedelic chaos for hours. literally, all i did yesterday was blow off a paper i have due soon, got stoned all day, and tried playing along with some of the AMT ep freakouts on my guitar. it was exhausting and exhilirating, then me cunt next door neighbor called the cops on a noise complaint, thats when i passed out for 12 hrs. have you heard the kawabata solo record? he does a jam with tatsuya that is just nutty. two of the best musicians to have ever graced japan/the earth just totally freaking the fuck out. i think AMT could be one of my favorite bands, but for some reaosn i always fail to include them on my best of lists and stuff, which again goes back to the fact that they havnt had one defining "record", like they havnt had thier 'fun house' or 'trout mask', but theyve had shit loads of great smaller records with amazing music scattered all over the place. in any case, they rival shit like smegma, hawkwind, cromagnon, and parliament as the most psychedelic band ever in my opinion. |
makoto and tatsuya played dublin recently.. i heard that the gig was mesmerising to say the least... or maybe makoto wasnt there...... he was ill or something...
anyhoo it was good.. if semperet was online he would clarify this... he was at it and an amt supporter he is |
Seen a bunch of them playing recently and they put on a party.
|
electric heavyland.
Also, some 4 disc set I heard once was amazing. |
Also, the tatsuya solo album "is it pencil or is it sheep" is worth looking into...
|
i used to be really into them until they started putting out 5 records a year and it became too difficult to keep up, plus i found them a bit samey live, and higashi hiroshi's synth playing is a bit corny.
i'm going to download a few of their recent albums to see what they're like though. |
Does anyone know the 4 disc set I'm talking about?
One of the discs was typical AMT, one of the dics was like nothing but keyboard noodling... I dunno. It was great. |

Love that Father Moo and the Black Sheep LP!
|
re: the noodling, sure, they are one of the top bands who can wank around and sound sometimes more interesting than in their songs, but some of those wanks are pretty uninspiring though.
|
I hate wanking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless I'm the one doing it!!!!!!!!!!
sorry if my post ssuck, I'm fucked up on jack danils. |

The Penultimate Galactic Bordello is the four disc one and it's not the place to start, even if it has some really nice stuff here and there.
Their latest incarnation with Pikachu from Aframpo is superb--she really adds something to their stage presence, namely hotpants and great chops both vocally and on drums. The trio gig Pauliebee refers to was cool but it was just Kawabata and the Ruins drummer Tatsuya, who was blistering. Their gigs are always captivating--ever the same but always different. It was meant to include the bassist but he didn't tour--this is what Paulie refers to when he mentions it above. For what it's worth I usually recommend In C, La Novia and Wild Gals to those who don't know much, but I think their strongest work (at least I think this today) is Iao Chant and Univers, both of which should be freely available. Lately Kawabata has discovered that it's alright to have a low end in the mix and their work has become even heavier. Finally, I welcome their decision to part with Cotton--she always annoyed the shite out of me despite her great work on Univers. Oh, finally finally, there's a great recording of their last show from the US Spring tour, in the Bottom of the Hill in SF, on archive.org. Nice! |

she doesn't strike me as being the most responsible person. and i can imagine that combined with higashi the likely result wouldn't be very good. but still, as bez type characters go she's pretty great.
|
I'm with toilet on this one.
Her post-AMT music project The Birds is awesome. Their CD on Important is one of my favorite AMT related recordings. |
![]() this one is my favorite that i've heard. i also have the dvd "hardcore uncle meat" which is cool |

Does The Cosmic Shepherd Dream Of Electric Tapirs? Have You seen The Other Side Of the Sky? Acid Mothers Temple (S/T) Wild Gals A Go-Go Stones, Women, Records Magical Powers From Mars |
Electric Heavyland and New Geocentric Worlds are tied for my favorite. Two such different directions I couldn't pick one over the other.
Have You Seen the Other Side of the Sky holds up really well to the older stuff. Magical Powers from Mars is another personal fave. For a long conceptual piece Mantra of Love is quite awesome too. Basically I love everything I've heard which is a lot, but not everything or even close. |
short vid clip of the reworked intro to "Pink Lady Lemonade" from last thursday night:
