Record Collectors: Whats the rarest record on record?

Usually record collectors have a list mental or physical that they keep with them so when they go to a new city they can scour the bins in search.

I remember one time at Wax n Facts in Atlanta I found about 15 7"'s that were marked down to next to nothing that were like candy. Pavement, Freek itten, Sonic Y, all each 3 bucks.

I've had dreams in the past where I would find original Hank Williams LP's in the used bin for a buck only to wake up listening to "ur cheetin heart"

I'm just Saturday curious what's everyone's guess on the rarest LP out there.

atsonicpark 06.03.2006 07:46 PM

That boredoms record with eye singing karaoke that's limited to one copy.

golden child 06.03.2006 07:51 PM

the original cylinders edison used when testing out his phonograph

atsonicpark 06.03.2006 07:51 PM

I don't remember... look up the boredoms discography site.

CHOUT 06.03.2006 09:15 PM

A lot of Acetates are super rare and go for large sums, being pretty fragile and playing only a few times, like that Velvet Underground one from '66 that was found at a yard sale a couple years ago that's worth thousands.
Edit: I seem to recall something about the VU music being released?

Everyneurotic 06.03.2006 09:36 PM

the song atsonicpark is talking about, eye doing karaoke, is born to be wild.

that one is very rare, along with the boredoms album he pressed onto a new york dolls album he traded to masonna.

HaydenAsche 06.03.2006 11:22 PM

I have a KK Rampage 7" limited to 300 copies, a limited edition Animal Collective 7" limited to 300 copies, a 7" Danielson record that is limited edition(Again, I want to say 300 copies or something), and a Ghost Arcade 7" that is limited to 50.

SolidZach 06.03.2006 11:31 PM

I would also have to go with the Boredoms record.

Yes, fabulous..

The Ninth Sympothy fourth movement is amazing.
William Tell Overture
Country Lane

Walter Carlos is a master

HaydenAsche 06.04.2006 12:01 AM

I think the rarest record is probably Schizophrenicroom/HaydenAsche split 28" "Crips Niggas/Blood Niggas" limited to a mere 0 copies.

oh hale yeah! that's the one i produced right?

doctor dan 06.04.2006 06:37 AM

its a kinda impossible question to answer, as there'll be countless obscure records limited to tiny releases, altho the majority wil be worth nothing. in terms of value, the most expensive ive heard of is the velvet underground acetate, altho i think there was also a ridiculously valuable bob dylan acetate found (blonde on blonde?). however. its the velvets record thatll go down in the record buying hall of fame, cos it was sold to the guy for like 2 bucks or some shit.

Iain 06.04.2006 06:47 AM

The Merzedes has got to be pretty valuable if only for the fact that it's housed in a used Merc. Don't suppose it counts as a record though.

johnnywinternoshow 06.04.2006 07:34 AM

i remember seeing a cd by guided by voices (i think) on ebay going for $6,500+ If i remember correctly it was part of a limited edition of 200 and had a hand drawn cover by one of the band members

Savage Clone 06.04.2006 09:13 AM

That GBV one was the original Propeller LP.
http://popsike.com/php/detaildata.php?itemnr=4721830063

http://www.popsike.com is a great site to explore who has paid what ridiculous amount for which albums. Some surprises there, like the $8500.00 Misfits 45.

I have several albums limited to less than 100, and some lathe cuts in editions below 50 copies. For the kind of stuff I buy, 1000 copies is a pretty huge run in any case.
There is one super-rarity that I think someone could still theoretically run across at a garage sale; always be sure to look carefully at every copy of Bowie's "Diamond Dogs." If the David dog has genitals, it is worth thousands of dollars. That version was immediately recalled and the naughty bits were airbrushed out.

jon boy 06.04.2006 09:41 AM

love buzz by nirvana is quite rare. i only say because a friend had a bootleg copy and sold it to someone for £300.

sounds like the right album, but the one i saw was sold in the states and there was anews story on pitchfork about it going for over $6500

To me that;s just crazy, you could get well over 400-500 regular albums for that

Savage Clone 06.04.2006 10:21 AM

Whoops.
I posted the wrong link. That was a cheap one!
Here is the other one I meant to post:

jon boy 06.04.2006 10:57 AM

ralph & florean by kraftwerk is also quite rare and very expensive.

Savage Clone 06.04.2006 11:02 AM

That's not all that expensive really; the American pressing goes for less than 30 dollars and the German one is usually less than 100. Comparatively speaking, not too bad. I got mine for 20 dollars, which was a steal. Then one of my cats sharpened his claws on the spine. Bastard!
I sold a copy of the first edition of the first Can LP for a good chunk (this was for work, not from my personal collection):

jon boy 06.04.2006 11:10 AM

i got metal machine music at a car boot sale for £2.50. the guy said it was just noise and he hated it and wanted more walk on the wild side.

I remember that. You have the coolest job ever.

porkmarras 06.04.2006 11:16 AM

Not sure if they are the rarest but they are certainly rare:

silverfreepress (sdasher) 06.04.2006 11:35 AM

I know almost nothing about how the Carter Family did their record buisness but is there an record label listed? They were extremely popular and they probably didn't release limited editions too often but you have to account time and time can make records rare.

"your the girl of my drems but it seems that my dreams never come true"

the Carter Family, ahhhhhh

Everyneurotic 06.04.2006 12:10 PM

the diamond dogs reminds me of two rare records:

1) guns n' roses appetite for destruction with the original cover, even though it's not that super rare (i've seen it a couple of times), it calls for a lot of money and it's seeked by many

2) the single disc lp version of metallica's master of puppets, which was recalled because the grooves were too close to each other, they caused the songs to skip“, so they reedited it into a 2xlp set. i don't remember if it was the elektra (u.s.) or music for nations (u.k. and europe) version that was the case. anyway, very rare since most of the records were recalled.

stirling 06.04.2006 12:23 PM

Negativland's U2 comes to mind.
It kills me because I saw it in the store when it came out, but didn't buy it.

Really? I'm sure I've seen that somewhere. Maybe not.

Don Cherry - Organic Society (Caprice Records, 2001) x 2 lp

This ultra-rare Don Cherry was recorded live in concert way back in 1972. It's an incredibly difficult to find Holy Grail of a spiritual free jazz LP & was conceived while Don Cherry was living in a commune in Sweden & has a very tribal feel throughout.

atari 2600 06.04.2006 01:44 PM

One can only find Lennie Trisano & Warne Marsh - Intuition. The original record is Crosscurrent (1948) & is both the true birth of the cool & improvisational free jazz.

atari 2600 06.04.2006 01:52 PM

Charlie Parker - Rebeboppers

Miles Davis (tp -2,13) Charlie Parker (as) Sadik Hakim (p -11,13) Dizzy Gillespie (p -1,10,16, tp, p -14,15) Curly Russell (b) Max Roach (d) WOR Studios, Broadway, NYC, November 26, 1945

1. Warming Up a Riff (orig.-take 1)
2. Billie's Bounce (new-take 1)
3. Billie's Bounce (short-take 2)
4. Billie's Bounce (new-take 3)
5. Billie's Bounce (new-take 4)
6. Billie's Bounce (orig.-take 5)
7. Now's the Time (short-take 1)
8. Now's the Time (short-take 2)
9. Now's the Time (new-take 3)
10. Now's the Time (orig.-take 4)
11. Thriving on a Riff (new-take 1)
12. Thriving on a Riff (short-take 2)
13. Thriving on a Riff (orig.-take 3)
14. Ko-ko (short-take 1)
15. Ko-ko (orig.-take 2)
16. Meandering (new-take 1)

This is the double album that was beloved by Jean Michel-Basquait. His tracklist is slightly out-of-order as Warming Up on a Riff is the first & Meandering is the last track.

For the movie, they couldn't even find the recording apparently & substituted snippets from introduction of The Metronome Jazz All-Stars from NYC, January 10, 1950.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 06.04.2006 01:52 PM

Jazz Collectors are the wildest.
Some apartments in New York are practically dangerours due to crazy shelving.
The WFMU record fare is always full of these freaks.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 06.04.2006 02:15 PM

I think my rarest record would be The Fire Escape- Psychotic Reaction. I've also got the original Clash US release with the free 7" inside. I'm not sure how rare that is, but it is cool that it has the original stuff with it.

I got a cool record from Switzerland with a bunch of Swiss bands doing covers of the ABBA song S.O.S. Every cover is very different though, I didn't even realize it at first.
