new sunn O)))
i had no idea this was coming, just stumbled across it on the southern lord website...thought some of you would like to know...
Last year sunn 0))) was invivted to perform at a ancient cathedral in Bergen Norway . The performance was captured via 24 track mobile recording and the resuluts were pressed onto double 180 gram vinyl. This recording will be available exclusively on vinyl only. There will not be a digital release (cd or downloads). Pure analog! The 0))) lineup for this performance includes Attila Csihar (Mayhem) on vocals, Steve Moore (Earth, Ascend) on the churchs' legendary pipe organ and Norwegian native Lasse Marhaug on electronics. The packaging for "Dømkirke" was designed with the utmost attention to detail and quality that perfectly compliments the audio content. Each 180 gram vinyl comes in a heavy stock, full color inner sleeve that features stunning photographs from the performance. The cover of the gatefold jackets feature exclusive art by Tanya Stene (Burzum, Ulver, Darkthrone). The jackets themselves are ultra-durable extra thick cardboard stock with thick, luxurious lamination. These were modeled after the Impulse! labels' LP jackets from the ‘60s. This package is durable, built to last and serves as the perfect shelter for this archival release. Behold the glory! Nicholas Mollerhaug, the festival curator, wrote these liner notes for the album: "Our idea behind this concert was to commission a piece of music from Sunn O))) referring to the gothic gregorian hymns of the Late Middle Ages. Hymns that flourished Bergen Cathedral in its earliest years: The age of the Great Famine and The Black Plague. The gregorian hymns of this time reflected the despair, the terrors and darkness of the world. Musically the hymns consisted of long slow lines of unison melodies. The unisonity, the dark mood and the slow melodic development are all elements that also can be traced back to Sunn O)))'s musical universe. These parallells between Sunn O))) and the medieval times gave birth to this commission - premiered at the grand final of Borealis Festival 2007. The Bergen Domkirke is dedicated to the Norwegian king and patron saint Olav (995-1030). The church was built around 1150. In the 1240s it was given to Fransiscan beggar munks. After fires in 1248 and 1270 the building was extended. With the financial help of king Magnus Lagabøte (1263-1280) the church got its present form and was finished in 1301. The very same king is buried in the chansel of the church. After the reformation the church became the cathedral of Bergen. It was then again struck by fire in 1463 and 1702. A cannon ball in the the church tower is a reminisence of the Battle of Bergen Bay in 1665. This record documents what happens when aesthetic openness and lack of prejudice rules in a medieval cathedral. Without these values inhabited in the legendary kantor of Bergen Cathedral- Magnar Mangersnes - this concert would never have been possible. - Nicholas Mollerhaug" SUNN O))) "Dømkirke" Live in Bergen Cathedral 031807 1) Why dost thou hide thyself in clouds? I had heard they were recording a new "studio" album, a follow up to black one, but details on that seem to have disappeared in light of this.
Either way, thanks for this! |
|
hooray for everything! i do love sunn o)))
|
ha damn...didn't know attila could belt it out like that...im still kinda hesitant to purchase this...i thought oracle was kind of weak so i dont know if im about to cough up some loot for a mediocre live drone record...maybe if its cheap at the knitting factory show in a couple weeks...
|
long live Sunn
|
Yeah, I'd rather have a new studio recording definitely.
|
Seeing them with Earth in a church in a few weeks. Should be nothing short of epic, I'm sure.
I heard something about them playing material exclusively from their Grimmrobe Demos on the tour they're doing now. Is that true? That one and Oracle are the only two "major" Sunn O))) releases I haven't heard yet. |
o'malley and anderson have been so busy with so many different great projects, i wonder if theyre done with sunn o))). i mean, niehter have stuck to the same project for very long, and sunn o))) has definitley been thier longest. it also seems that they, o'malley especially, are kinda done with the metal thing, and into more wierd and extreme and experimental stuff (not than sunn o))) isnt those things, but yknow what im saying)

I really need to listen to this band more. Today I was blasting Black One on my way work. Good stuff, especially at 5:15am in empty streets.
|
you're going to work at 5:15 am?
why the hell would one want a job like that? |
I work at the post office and my job starts around 5:45am. I usually get home by noon. so it's a fair deal.
"It Took The Night To Believe" is eerie. |

Haha... oh, you mean they're playing the 0-0-0-2-3 riff for an hour instead of the 0-4-4-5-6 riff for an hour on this tour? |
Does it still sounds like Earth 2 or did they come up with a different idea to rip off to play in their cool outfits.?
|
Hahaha.

I don't know, but I'm sure they're gonna do a 2LP/2CD version of it 3 months after the original release.... preferably a different US and Japanese version. |
Each limited to 5000 copies.
Before they release another version "by popular demand". With alternate artwork. |
Sunn O))) is like the Pokémon of doom drone. Gotta catch 'em all!
...or just keep the cool looking ones at least. |

..... in 5 different vinyl colours. With fold out poster. God, it must suck so hard to be a die-hard collector of all that shit. |
Don't forget the signed limited $1000 edition special edition glow-in-the-dark tri-fold lathe with glow in the dark ink blots that spell "sunn o)))", with diamond encrusted sunn guitar pick, "grimm robe" sunn o))) halloween costume, and a copy of the sheet music for the album!
|
Does everybody on here love Sunn o))))))))))?
|
i doubt it

It actually works as well with Nadja. There are a lot of contenders in the noise category |

I love old the old Sunn stuff... Grimm Robe, 00 Void, Flight of the Behemoth. I think they lust their luster but I still really enjoy them.. they're easy to make fun of though. A lot of people don't realize that I make fun of things I love as much as things I hate.
Anyway, my band robe. (www.myspace.com/robetheband) started as a sunn tribute band so... |
sunn o))) are kiss for the new millennium.
at first i was like "another overpriced bootleg?" but then i read that lasse marhaug is involved, and the artwork sounds nice. i'm not buying it from the southern lord website, though; fuck them. and where the fuck is the new studio album? yeah, they are touring the grimmrobe shit and it's only soma and anderson; fuckers should have invited g stuart dahlquist. nadja have most of their dicography in print and the bigger releases are now available in multiple formats, plus they have never repackaged a single release a thousand different times. |
whats wrong with the southern lord website?
|
im actually quiote convinced that o'malley is something like a metal genius. he has a very unique take on heavy music. i love sunn o))) a lot, favorites being flight of the behemoth, altar (which is both boris and sunn 0))) at the top of thier game) and black. only thing i hate by them is white 2, which is kinda pointless sounding, white 1 with the spoken word by julian cope is awesome though, "greg anderson purveyor of sonic doom". i like khanate and burning witch better though i think, much more rhythmic and the vocals are great.
i also really love the last KTL album. im not even into pita really but his shit with o'malley is great, wonderful mix of really intelligent experimental noise and more brutish metal. ive also heard people refer to stephen o'malley as an ironic metal dude. fuck that, the guy is a metalhead to the core, he even ran that amazing black metal zine back in the day. he just is influenced by stuff like sun ra, la monte young, and stockhausen as he is earth, mayhem, etc.. the SOMA stuff is cool too. |

their shipping and handling rates are quite high and they are known to not send orders. |
hmmm i did wait a while for my burial chamber trio/boris+merzbow order but then again they did chuck in a bunch of free stuff so they're ok by me
|
southern lord has consistently put out great records for years now, ive never ordered anything by them so i cant complain in that area. from the best in classic brutal as fuck doom like the grief re-release, and truly experimental music like oren ambarchi. i wonder if theyll re-release any of the phlem stuff, ambarchi's scum noise band with robbie avenaim. ive heard some stuff by them and its truly ear destroying.

i'm still waiting for the boris+merzbow lp. |

(hey, are you a mailman?! i was thinking about doing that...whats the word?) srry back to sunn |
Damn, looked to buy this at the record shop yesterday but the order hasn't come in yet.
All of the KTL material was magnificent, and Black 1 still stands as one of my favorite metal albums. Check out the "Asunder/Graves at Sea" album for some gruesome sludge. |
graves at sea rule.
