I'm Quitting My Job And Moving To Austin In 2 Weeks
so when my boss gets in in about an hour i'm giving him my 2 weeks notice and moving to austin. already got a new job down there that pays a good $3 more an hour and has benefits. just thought i'd share. :)
|
Schweeeeeeeeeeeet.
|
well done.
|
my new job is going to put me up in an apartment. that way i can still keep my place in fort worth for the weekends.
|
Many congrats, o'connor. That sounds like a great result for you.
|
f'sho. thank you all. as horrid as it's gonna sound, i've never been to austin. and i've lived in texas for a good number of years. what's fun down yonder?
|
it used to be a lot cooler than it is. gangstas now lurk outside of Emo's.
I was going to ask if you had a place too. with everyone in school, most of the affordable stuff will be already occupied. I think ACL is going on this weekend. there should be a lot of cool shows (even if you don't have tickets for "the main event"). |
If you like
Parks lakes nature trails roots rock Tex-Mex food drinking bars bars bars bars then you will enjoy austin if you hate rampant B.O. hippies burnouts gutterpunk runaways w/ $200 a day trust funds massive Yuppie influx segregation lack of restaurant variety. HEAT you may not enjoy austin I myself HATED and HATE IT, but that's just me. Asstown is not coducive to the Instigator. Good luck though. I do not drink and while I enjoy nature, I am not an avid seeker of nature experience (camping, kayaking, swimming in fetid lakes, etc), and these are the two MAIN things to do in Austin. |
damn, i fucking HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAte hippies and smelly people... but i love the sauce. i guess it'll be 50/50. either way it's cool. i plan on spending most of my time hold up in my apartment so as to save some scratch.
|
^^^ on the bright side, each bike-riding hippie that you run over is worth an extra 10 points.
|
I live in Austin and I dig it for the most part. A lot of locally owned businesses: a lot of locally owned record stores! If you're from Ft. Worth, I think you'll feel right at home in Austin. The traffic sucks and the lack of adequate public transportation is not anything you aren't used to. I would recommend getting a bike and moving in toward the city. If you don't smoke pot, prepare to feel left out in almost every social situation.
In my opinion, if you're going to live in Texas, live in Austin. Sure it's hot, but the surrounding landscape is surprisingly beautiful. The green belt and Barton Springs are great in the summer. I definitely wouldn't be reclusive while living here. And if you like wading through a see of hipsters, Jackalope on 6th has two dollar pints of anything and everything they have on tap (Bellhaven, Guiness, Franzikaner, New Castle, Real Ales). It's the only night where it's actually cheaper to drink at a bar. The music scene is way overrated. |
i indeed do puff on teh green so that's not a problem. i wont' have to worry about transportation (i've got my own car, and they send a guy to drive me to work). i dont' drink beer though so i may have to spend some $$$ on liquor. other than that it sounds alright. plus i've got a few friends down there already so i won't be completely alone.

lol i wish. i'm gonna be working for an electrical company. i'm tired of sitting in an offic eeveryday getting fat at my desk. i'm just gonna b eliving in teh same complex as the guy who owns the company so i'll ride to work w/ him. my little brother is good friends w/ him and got him to hire me.
|
ha ha yeah the way you said it, it sounded like they would send a freakin' LIMO to come and fetch you in the morning LIKE YOU'RE F***IN' CRYPTO or something.

<------ Former Austinite
Let's see, the green belt was my favorite part about Austin. If you wander off the trails and climb up the rock walls you can find a small colony of hobos to hang with. Some very fine folks live back there full time... Possibly my brother is one of them at the moment. The Cathedral of Junk in south Austin is amazing and is owned by wonderful people. Go have a beer with them when they're open. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/7816 This is a pretty important part of living in Austin: http://www.showlistaustin.com/ If you're interested at all in improvised experimental whatnots, the Salvage Vanguard Theater is important: http://www.salvagevanguard.org/index.php For food... Ruby's BBQ near the UT campus is good. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/201/4...e6bc9b.jpg?v=0 You can get some wicked bad ass Chinese food at Ding ho(sp?) in north Austin. I tended to stay away from sixth st., but if you must go Jackalope and that one place across the streetish from emo's with all the heavy metal dudes that I can't remember the name of are the places to be. I'll think of more stuff later. |
dude i gots to check out that junk cathedral! wonder if he'll let me burn one in it?

Good for you!
Benefits are very important :D |
There are good recrd stores and great places to see tourring shows and nearly all bands of all sizes stop in austin, so that is a plus. There are some good people too, don;t let me make the mistake of not adding that.
If you already know some people there it is better, but if you ove there cold it is kind of a harsh cliquish experience, and it can take a long time to get to know anyone. oh, and Austin is the capital of Texas in one other respect, nowhere else will you find so many athletic-bodied Butterfaces. There are some doozies!!!!! |
lol i haven't heard butterfaces in a loooong time lol. that sucks. i'm not a huge fan of ugly chicks.

actually, it seems as if the new trend is the belly-pooch. I've never seen so many girls who look pregnant drinking as I did the last time I was there. it really was bizarre. and I'm not talking about girls who just aren't skinny. they are skinny girls WITH belly pooches. maybe it's all the beer. |
that's why i don't drink beer, that shit'll give you a gut.
|
Congratulationssss!!!
I agree with rob Austin is okay to visit But I would never live there It's too "laid back" (stoner central) for my taste |
i like laid back. not lazy though, just laid back.
|
Congrats, I know how it feels to direly need change. What brings you to austin though?
I'm doing practically the same thing...in two weeks as well. I'm quitting my job and moving to Montreal. Scouting out for a Montreal job next week. |
eh not really change. just more money lol
|
any more words of wisdom?
|
stay away from the heroin crowd
and the meth crowd and the cokeheads that is around 80% of the scene. be careful |
Don't forget the bats !!!
Bat Season is Mid-March to Early November
![]() About Congress Bridge Bats
The Congress Avenue Bridge spans Town Lake in downtown Austin and is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. The colony is estimated at 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats. Each night from mid-March to November, the bats emerge from under the bridge at dusk to blanket the sky as they head out to forage for food. This event has become one of the most spectacular and unusual tourist attractions in Texas. The most spectacular bat flights are during hot, dry August nights, when multiple columns of bats emerge. There are several points from which to view the event, and an information kiosk is located on the north bank of the river, just east of the bridge.
|
eat breakfast at the Magnolia Cafe. I suggest the T-Rex omelette.
|
![]() omg, how i hate these little shits. They really scare me. yes i'm a pussy. |
yeah! the bats are cool! I like the fractal nature of the swarm, as it winds and coils upon itself.
Waterloo records is a must-visit, at 6th and lamar I think. Sound on Sound, if it is still there, is kick ass. You'll have to ask someone how o get there. The Whole Foods home ofice is there along with the goddamn largest fucking whole foods supermarket in the fuckin world. The Austin Record covention is this weekend. it is twice a year, the Fall one being the biggest. HUGE record convention. I went a few years ago with $150 to spend and got some choice fucking albums. Came back with like 20 Jazz, punk, indie, classsical, blues albums. There is a lot of BBQ, but if you like RIBS, pork ribs, then go to Texas Rib Kings, on the northern side of austin. (hope they are still there) FUCK the ribs are amazing wonderful. |
In all the time I lived in Austin I don't think I ever managed to see the bats. I guess I never crossed the bridge at the right time.
Some other stuff... End of An Ear Records: By far the best record store in Austin. South 1st St. Caves! Enter the greenbelt from the far west side, cross the river, and walk towards the big hill with the rock wall. There are a bunch of wicked bad ass caves over there. Cathedral of Junk video on youtube: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=FTWMFBOKiRA ooooh. There's good and cheap Vietnamese food to be had on the east side of Oltorf. 888 and Hai KY. |
I somehow missed this thread. My sister lives in Austin. I think all she ever does is go to class and go bowling. She's pretty boring, but I bet there's lots of neat stuff for you to do.
|
