Pumpkins 20th Anniversary Tour

To be honest, I'm pretty over the whole "hey! It's not REALLY the Smashing Pumpkins" thing. And yeah, ZEITGEIST was weak. But I liked it more than the Zwan album anyway. But the point is I'm actually feeling slightly excited about this new tour, mostly cuz they'll be focusing on older material it would seem. Y'know, playing a career overview. Think I might consider tickets. Anyone else feeling it? Or do you all think I'm that much lamer for this post?

greedrex 10.03.2008 07:51 AM

the Pumpkins used to be good.
The annoying voice, you know ...
I like Siamese and Mellon.
I like quite a few songs off Adore and Pisces.

ZEROpumpkins 10.03.2008 07:54 AM

I missed them last time because I thought they were gonna be playing stuff of Sheitgeist. Maybe this will be worth attending if they come to Australia.

o'connor 10.03.2008 07:55 AM

there a pretty good band. you know thsoe tix are gonna be overpriced as fuck though, so i'd have to say hells the the nah.

noisereductions 10.03.2008 07:57 AM

Siamese/Pisces are my favorites.
Adore is actually very, very up there for me.
Then Mellon Collie.

But y'know it's funny. People get all bent out of shape that James and D'arcy are gone. And yeah, I get it. But at the same time, SIAMESE is pretty much the pinacle of their work, and that was basically a Billy solo LP in a way.

word. Maybe there's a contest I can win. Haha.

auto-aim 10.03.2008 08:03 AM

american gothic wasn't terrible - but I think almost everything else they've done since the reunion has been. (zeitgeist - the song - was quite good.) They're one of those band for me now that I don't think I'd get into but because they caught me at the right moment in my life they're very important to me and a huge influence. They just need to come back down to earth and stop recording nonsense.

noisereductions 10.03.2008 08:17 AM

I havent picked up AMERICAN GOTHIC yet, though it's been on my To Get List since it's release.

auto-aim 10.03.2008 08:22 AM

like i said it's not terrible... I might go as far as saying it almost captures a bit of the old pumpkin charm. however I think it's full of bad production decisions which ruin it... Like over-doing things and corgans voice has to fill like every gap in the music which disappoints me. I would have much prefered an album of american gothic to zeitgeist though.

noisereductions 10.03.2008 08:25 AM

I want to pick up EARPHORIA as well. Never did. But man, did I love the VIEWPHORIA video back in the day!

o'connor 10.03.2008 08:40 AM

i do wish james was gonna be playing w/ em, but i could care less about d'arcy. besides, she only played bass, and we all know how un-important bass is :p

auto-aim 10.03.2008 08:40 AM

yeah i wish they were still that band - some of the performances and lightyears away from what they are now.

un-important like a fox!

o'connor 10.03.2008 08:54 AM

bwahahahahahahaha!

punkaspoo 10.03.2008 09:11 AM

Oh man I was heavily into them like 7 years ago, it was all about the Pumpkins. I remember seeing them in 2000, the fake farewell tour. I saw them again this year and it was a dissapointment. There was lacking something and the sound was not good. I haven't yet picked up Zeitgeist or American Ghotic and I'm really not interested.
Lets put the records on order:

1. Siamese Dream
2. MC&IS
3. Machina
4. Adore
5. Gish

gmku 10.03.2008 09:21 AM

Love Gish and Siamese Dream. Hate the rest.

I also have a great bubblegum-pink 45 of Tristessa on the SubPop label with picture sleeve.

pedestrian 10.03.2008 09:32 AM

I seem to recall LOVING this band in the 90s. I wore out my Siamese Dream and Gish tapes. Over the years our tastes change and/or mature and some bands stay with you and others do not. For whatever reason, Smashing Pumpkins did not.

batreleaser 10.03.2008 09:41 AM

i had no idea people still liked the smashing pumpkins.

like someone else said above, some bands stay with you. The Pumpkins always have for some reason. Loved em in Jr. High. Still love em now. It's like I can't help but have a soft spot for them.

batreleaser 10.03.2008 01:05 PM

hey yeah whatever man, dig what you dig.

gmku 10.03.2008 01:11 PM

I still listen to Gish and SD. Great albums.

samuel 10.03.2008 04:19 PM

I've been listening to "For Martha" and "Blank Page" nonstop lately. Adore is such a great album.

How I feel about the Pumpkins and Corgan:
Live At Caberet Metro 05/10/88 - 9/10
Gish - 7/10
Siamese Dream - 8/10
Pisces Iscariot - 7/10
MC&IS - 8/10
Adore - 9/10
MACHINA - 9/10
MACHINA II - 10/10
Mary Star of the Sea - 7/10
Djali Zwan (from what I've heard) - 8/10
TheFutureEmbrace - 6/10
Zeitgeist - 7/10
American Gothic - 8/10

I saw them two summers ago during there CD-release show in DC, and they were great. They somehow rearranged one of my favorite songs "Shame" and made it better... actually, I like both versions equally.

ZEROpumpkins 10.03.2008 08:24 PM

Only 8/10 for Siamese but 9/10 for Machina? C'mon!
Siamese Dream has some of the best production i've heard on it, whereas Machina goes too far with the whole "Wall of sound" thing.

terriblecanyons 10.03.2008 10:59 PM

FUCK I can't believe I missed them back in August.

Oh man, I love MACHINA. Siamese Dream has a couple weak tracks for me... like Geek USA, Quiet, and even Today.

atsonicpark 10.06.2008 07:12 AM

zero is a good song.

Otherwise, the pumpkins bore me and always have.

noisereductions 10.06.2008 07:15 AM

I think SD is ridiculously solid. (and I'm a big fan of that whole period, so PISCES and EARPHORIA etc.)

After that, I adore ADORE. The synths, the drum machines.

valid 10.06.2008 10:58 AM

run, fuck pumpkins.

Green Magnesium 10.09.2008 12:22 PM

I'm more interested in the GISH box-set that was mentioned a while back. Rights and legal issues may potentially be getting in the way of that, last I heard.

The tour I'm not too keen on.

p.s. ADORE is one of my fave albums by any band, ever. I would consider going to a Don't Look Back type show dedicated to that album. Def won't happen though.

noisereductions 10.09.2008 12:39 PM

Yeah ADORE is great.

The GISH box has me interested as well.

joe11121 01.03.2009 03:09 AM

i love them. and the tour was great i saw them in toronto

She's hot though, well she was, no idea what she looks like now. and she sang quite a bit too, she had a nice voice. and yeah james kicks ass at guitar, not a fan his singing though.

_slavo_ 01.03.2009 03:23 AM

Adore was a pretty important album for me when I was a whining, depressive teenager.

atsonicpark 01.03.2009 08:03 AM

Haha, someone at work told me that this tour was terrible and Pumpkins fans were disappointed that the Pumpkins played long, directionless noise jams and not their hits. That makes me kinda like the Pumpkins now! (not really)

Billy Corgan said, as members of the audience were leaving, "Sorry we're not playing the songs you lost your virginity to." And then went into a 30 minute feedback fest! THat's the shit!

Decayed Rhapsody 01.03.2009 10:18 AM

Billy's Tin Machine?
