lechaoscestmoi 10.16.2008 03:34 PM

Beefheart is worse

lechaoscestmoi 10.16.2008 03:34 PM

LOL j/k

atsonicpark 10.16.2008 03:36 PM

haha.

Beefheart is a genius. But Zappa is decent.

Derek 10.16.2008 04:20 PM

Zappa is creative... so is Beefheart. I like Beefheart's ideas more.

batreleaser 10.16.2008 06:49 PM

Zappa is a fuckhead. I know this is unrelated, but people say a band like Wolf Eyes sucks because they're inconsistent and release too much shit (but 75 percent of thier rehersal 3 inch cdr's are more worth a listen than anything by Zappa to these ears), well Zappa was like the original culperate of this. In fact, the only people influenced besides acid fried idiots are people who too believe that their perennial internal genius makes it justified to release every bodily function sound they can muster. Zappa was totally inconsistent, totally pretentious, and totally lame. He's like Patton; no talent at anything other than getting amazing backup bands (Fantomas=The Mothers of Invention).

the ikara cult 10.16.2008 06:49 PM

I hate to conform to internet messageboard consensus, but ive never really loved old Franks work, but he doubtless treated his mum and his dog with the upmost respect etc.

Green Magnesium 10.16.2008 10:44 PM

Me no likey either.

I would likely listen to the solo work of Paul McCartney before I willingly took Zappa for a spin. Mind you, I have no love for McCartney...... lesser of two evils

I was always a Lennon dude. I mean, McCartney has a handful I'll go for. But Lennon was far more interesting.

Green Magnesium 10.17.2008 01:34 PM

I prefer Harrison overall.

I do like Lennon though :)

eduveloper 10.17.2008 02:43 PM

Zappa intended to be a pain in the ass.

alteredcourse 10.17.2008 02:50 PM

Whats a good Zappa record, and anyones favorite Beefheart?

noisereductions 10.17.2008 03:03 PM

My favorite Zappa is WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY. It's a great satire of hippy culture. But also it's great music.

Also, I really like SHIP ARRIVING TOO LATE TO SAVE A DROWNING WITCH, one of his 80's albums that makes great use of the synclavier. You MIGHT know this album as "the one that has 'Valley Girl'," but it's a really interesting record throughtout.

Um. I dnt know. You might also try a Zappa comp, so that you can hear his different styles (rock, doo-wop, jazz, classical, etc), though I can't say either of the CHEAP THRILLS ones are that solid. Maybe STRICTLY COMMERCIAL?

lechaoscestmoi 10.17.2008 03:04 PM

everybody knows the best thing zappa has ever done in his career was producing tmr.

greedrex 10.17.2008 03:51 PM

me not likey! :-(

Yeah, Strictly Commercial is not bad for a compilation.

Derek 10.17.2008 04:42 PM

We're Only In It For The Money is the only album of Zappa's worth owning.

PAULYBEE2656 10.17.2008 05:55 PM

Which leaves two more spots for a top ten. I suppose I'll go with The Grand Wazoo and Joe's Garage.

Great jams on Chunga's Revenge.

Green Magnesium 10.20.2008 11:22 PM

My boyfriend (in a drunken stupor) got talked into buying some $8.00 commemorative Zappa beer this past weekend in a Philly bar. It tasted like metallic shit. Everyone else thought the label was so cool. I sat there biting my lip the whole time.

jonathan 10.21.2008 12:09 AM

No one can say that hate Frank Zappa until they've heard We're Only in it for the Money. Great record.
