Yeah, cause usually when anything punk has horns, it just ends up sounding ska, even if they didn't want it to, but I love the subtle blend here...

Just bought that one a couple of weeks ago. Such a great band, they influenced Refused and made me rediscover Rites of Spring

Derek 10.23.2008 10:41 AM

I'm not talking about Beatles songs
played 100 years before I was born

uhler 10.23.2008 02:46 PM

yes one of the best bands ever.

atsonicpark 10.23.2008 03:12 PM

Didn't we already have a thread about them? Or like 5?

Pretty good band... ocassionally even brilliant.

afterthefact 10.23.2008 03:16 PM

I don't know... I'm sure most bands that people start threads about already have a thread about them.

This thread is the illegitimate child of my love for this band and my being too lazy to see if there was already a thread for them.

atsonicpark 10.23.2008 03:18 PM

Sure. I just don't see why so many people enjoy repeating themselves. Wait, I've said that before. OHHH!

afterthefact 10.23.2008 03:29 PM

Burn!!! On yourself!!!!

uhler 10.23.2008 04:17 PM

1 2 3 repeater!

Derek 10.23.2008 04:21 PM

Yeah, Fugazi are better.

Both amazing bands though!

lechaoscestmoi 10.23.2008 04:23 PM

destroyed my post before someone gets pissed haha

yep i prefer fugazi!

atsonicpark 10.23.2008 04:26 PM

P-U-gazi.

Poogazi.

Fuckazi.

I don't know why I'm saying all that.

uhler 10.23.2008 04:29 PM

i like fugazi better. i think all their albums are perfect, but that's what i think of NOU too. it's just that fugazi has released more of a bulk of perfect records than NOU. plus, i prefer guy over ian s., even though they are both great.

cuz you hate them of course

atsonicpark 10.23.2008 04:30 PM

I like the argument.

lechaoscestmoi 10.23.2008 04:31 PM

top 3 fugazi albums:
1. the argument
2. repeater
3. 13 songs

great line.

that is incredibly false. the flying luttenbachers, the contortions, brainbombs, the silver daggers, etc.. are all bands who use horns and end up coming off as free jazz infused punk way more than fucking ska. the only people "who just end up sounding ska" are very poor and misfortunate and misguided morons. a horn section is just a great way to add an immediate element of free jazz or improv to the sound. nation of ulysses did this well.

batreleaser 10.23.2008 04:35 PM

if fugazi never made the arguement, then nation of ulysses would be better.

lechaoscestmoi 10.23.2008 04:36 PM

if fugazi never formed then nou would be better, yes

uhler 10.23.2008 04:38 PM

the only time punk bands who use horns sound like ska is if they use the ska rhythm and "upside down rnb" guitar chords.

i mean the jam also used horns in their later songs but they used them for more of a soul sound.

thatt's what i think too.

the arguement could quite possibly could be their best album, but red medicine and repeater are still better than anything NOU did and that's a strong statement to make since 13 point program to destroy america is one of my favorite albums of all time.

batreleaser 10.23.2008 04:46 PM

nah, ulysses is way more unique sounding to me. that is except for the arguement, which sounds like nothing else.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 10.23.2008 07:24 PM

I love the song Aspirin Kid by Nation of Ulysses.

No other band sounds like Fugazi.

NOU are fantastic. haven't listened to them for ages, I may have to.

yeah i have to agree with you. bands try to sound fugazi, but fugazi doesn't sound like anyone. ian even said when they work out ideas for songs that if the song sounds like something they have already did or like anyone else they keep reworking the song until it sounds like nothing they originally came up with.

atsonicpark 10.24.2008 04:37 AM

fugazi sound like bloodthirsty butchers.

It's not incredibly false.

I'm not saying that bands try not to sound ska but end up doing so, I'm saying that most of the time when horns and punk meet, they go ska.

Sure there are a lot of bands that don't sound ska, but for everyone that you can name, there are like 20 that didn't see anything other than ska as an option.

atsonicpark 10.24.2008 01:21 PM

I completely disagree. LOTS of bands use horns -- even bands like Rocket from the Crypt, McLusky, Boredoms (!), etc. -- and the word "ska" never comes to mind. Ska has a very defined sound, especially that stupid guitar sound and the uptempo rhythms... so I'd say most punk and related bands with horns sound nothing like and remind me nothing of ska. In fact, I haven't even THOUGHT of ska since accidentally seeing a ska concert about 6 years ago.

Anyway, I maybe am not understanding your point... a lot of bands with horns make ska... yeah, okay.. what does that have to do with this thread exactly?

afterthefact 10.24.2008 02:52 PM

I was just bringing it up. What's with all the aggression here?

We all have different reference points when it comes to music. The music you grew up on, the music you listen to most, the music that is around you, what have you. For you, obviously, horns don't automatically bring ska to mind. As you mentioned, you haven't even thought of ska for a long time. You obviously don't hear much ska.

I, on the other hand, while not being a huge fan of ska, have probably listened to ska more than you. Also, I have a lot of friends that like ska. Therefore, when I hear horns in music, I have more of a tendency to reference ska than you because I have more involvement with it. So when it's NOT ska, I think "Hey, it has horns but it's not ska, that's cool." Obviously ska is low on your list of references, so you aren't going to think that.

So THAT'S what I was talking about, and THAT'S why I brought it up.

Good god, the stupid crap you have to explain to people on this board...

atsonicpark 10.24.2008 03:23 PM

How is that stupid crap? I just was wondering what your point was, since this discussion has absolutely nothing to do with anything related to ska. I'm not being agressive, you're the one who gets defensive over the "stupid crap" that you have to explain.

Also, capitalizing THAT constantly doesn't make your original point any less pointless. Haha.

But I get where you were going with that now, so thanks for explaining the stupid crap.

afterthefact 10.24.2008 03:27 PM

Sorry, I'm just in such a pissed off mood today, I went a little crazy.

Not an excuse, just a reason :)

atsonicpark 10.24.2008 03:42 PM

No problem, I've been pretty edgy as of late too.

afterthefact 10.24.2008 03:50 PM

I don't know why today is so bad, I think it has to do with the fact that I was up until 2 last night scrubbing grease off the kitchen floor in our new condo, then I was so tired this morning I forgot to put my contacts before work, so everything's been blurry all day.

"who's got the real/ Anti parent culture sound?" The answer to this rhetorical question being 'no-one', which is precisely the lie that NOU perpetuate; being aware of it makes them worth more than any other hardcore/ punk band. I've always hated Fugazi.

uhler 10.25.2008 11:26 PM

like moentioned nefore horns doesn't make ska. the uptempo beat and the "upside down r'n'b" guitar make ska more than any horns do. also, i grew up in my early to mid teens in the "3rd wave" of ska and most of my peers loved that shit and i love the specials and 2 tone ska as well as the original ska artists and groups. aside from 2 tone and some clash songs (and a few other bands) ska and punk do not mix at all.

Sonic Youth 37 10.25.2008 11:29 PM

Nation Of Ulysses is da shizz.

I won't touch ska punk hardly at all. Can't get into it other than the occasional Leftover Crack or Choking Victim
