On the contrary it is working with porn and I can't put it in my portfolio. Good idea?

But yeah, that's one thing I was skeptical about with the work atmosphere. I work in the restaurant industry now and my coworkers are terrible, I could only imagine how bad the adult industry would be.

the "restaurant industry" is worse. it's all failed and struggling actors on a coke habit. at least in porn the "actors" have acting work. plus working as a busboy sucks.

i'd take the job. but if you're thinking you might bail, save your paychecks and do NOT get into debt so you have some "fuck you" money.

fuck you money is the money you have when you tell your boss "fuck you" and walk away from a shitty job. 6 months worth of living expenses is nice. more is even better.

so if you dont let the move go to your head & you stick with your current standard of living while you stash the money away, you can look for a new job later.

of course there are GOBS of money in porn, but the assholes also-- eh... you'll only know when you get there.

anyway, sounds like a risky move, but if you don't get trapped (by buying a new car, taking up debts, renting a pricey apartment or acquiring a drug habit), you'll have the freedom to reconsider later on.

web design is done by "freaks and weirdos" anyway and I do not think that it should be too much of a problem for you to move on from that. like a model, you work where the job is, and if it is porn then do your best and make it the best webpage design and such and enjoy your earnings.

Porn is not illegal. porn is a regulated industry. I doubt anyone else hiring you in a year or more would do anything more than give a smirk when they see your resume listing this gig. You may not get web design pay from the Vatican after this but most businesses know that work is work.

Nearly everyone, but it depends what district you live in. My brother just moved to NDG - the area outside of the British seperatist enclave known as Westmount (just down the street from Leonard Cohen) and English is far more common.

Thanks for the input Rob and !@#$%!. I just don't want to come off as a 'porn' type of person in the future. Design is oversaturated right now and it will be for a while and all the jobs either require experience or are too low a salary to live decently

I've had two friends do exactly this type of work now, and mostly it's just a job. Neither of them strike me as the types who would even care about porn if they weren't getting paid, and the companies don't mind that at all.

My friend who's doing it currently up in Seattle says it's a very professional atmosphere and the only weird thing is that your computer screen often has something on it for work reasons that you would get fired for having on it at any other job.

I don't see why you couldn't put it on your portfolio either. Of course you'd take it pretty easy on the samples and probably make it removable if clients were conservative. But otherwise, it would just show lots of clients you can be paid to do work that goes outside the mainstream. A lot of non-porn customers might appreciate that.

So the objections you've listed don't really hold water. The thing you have to ask yourself, and this would keep me from wanting to take such a job, can you stand to be inundated with a lot of visual images of potentially gross sexual stuff all day long that you are not choosing for yourself at all? Many people can handle that fine, and if they have programming or design skills, I say go make the bucks. You are not necessarily a prude if you think it would make you nauseated to be exposed to that sort of thing all the time. A lot of porn is plain ugly, and you don't get to choose if you're getting paid to work with it.

When I was at my aunts wedding about 5 years ago, this guy that did web design for pron sites was talking to me a lot (not about the porn, I was too young then), he seemed pretty happy. And I overheard that he loved his job.

That's definitely helpful to know, especially as there tends to be a decent amount of openings for this kind of stuff. I'll keep this in mind in case of any future openings, the one I applied for drastically lowered their compensation to $35/website (what???). Generally speaking most of these jobs pay very well though and it's good to know it's a professional atmosphere.

What absolute fucking cheap-skates! There are definitely going to be some sketchy fuckers in the porn industry, but then web design in general is a magnet for those types, isn't it? I'd say, look for a company that offers compensation that sounds reasonable in real world terms. My friend in Seattle's job has a 401K plan.
