Rob Instigator 10.24.2008 09:00 AM

My fave smiths song is a Tie between

The Queen Is Dead

and

Sweet and Tender Hooligan

noisereductions 10.24.2008 09:02 AM

Probably one of the ones where he's upset about something.

lungfish 10.24.2008 09:13 AM

can't just pick one (or even three, for that matter:

headmaster's ritual

that joke isn't funny anymore

oscillate wildly

Decayed Rhapsody 10.24.2008 10:32 AM

The Queen Is Dead or Asleep

noisereductions 10.24.2008 10:47 AM

I never got into them that much. They're one of those bands that I got the singles collection and though I like a lot of it, I never felt I needed anything more.

Nearly the same for me

I would go

The Headmaster's Ritual
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

either Rubber Ring/What She Said off of Rank or Paint a Vulgar Picture from Strageways. I was pretty obsessed back in '85.

I don't think I have any Smiths converted to mp3 (they're all on old cassette tapes), and it's been almost 20 years since I've listened to them. a Morrissey show in Dallas ruined me on them for awhile. these days, if I want to feel depressed, I just have to play something by The Flaming Lips.

I miss The Smiths. :(

Signpost 10.24.2008 11:59 AM

either Suffer Little Children or I Know It's Over

jimbrim 10.24.2008 12:04 PM

I really love the version of Hand In Glove with Sandie Shaw singing.

narlus 10.24.2008 12:06 PM

rubber ring's a great song too. and name me a sadder song than 'this night has opened my eyes'.

say what you want about morrissey, but he's written some brilliant lyrics.

Rob Instigator 10.24.2008 12:10 PM

I forgot about

Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before

LOVE that fucking song.

Rob Instigator 10.24.2008 12:10 PM

Girlfriend In A Coma.

SuperCreep 10.24.2008 02:42 PM

They're one of those bands who don't have one song which stands out as my favourite.

StevOK 10.24.2008 10:21 PM

When I saw Morrissey, his version of "Panic" really really blew me away.

Dead-Air 10.24.2008 11:50 PM

As played out as "How Soon Is Now?" might be, that really is an incredible guitar sound.

"Shoplifters of the World Unite", "Girlfriend in a Coma", and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" are all incredibly infectious pop too.

I absolutely hated the Smiths in the '80s but by the end of the '90s I was making a living playing them and the fucking Cure too, and I ended up noticing many of the songs were really good after all.

[Sandbag] 10.25.2008 08:05 AM

the headmaster ritual or
the queen is dead

Torn Curtain 10.25.2008 09:42 AM

Reel Around The Fountain & Still Ill

alteredcourse 10.26.2008 11:59 PM

Now, there are some Smiths songs in the past that really got to me.
Some songs, especially played by ex boyfriends and the like, really had me clutching my hands up in longing.

Its been years since then but not that long really. Tonight for the first time Morrissey's voice sounds so overdone and overbearing that I cant enjoy the same songs at all!

Perhaps a real fan hears the over-ness of Morrissey and loves the smiths anyways, but for me..Maybe just tonight, anyway.....I couldnt get through a single song.

Sonic Youth 37 10.27.2008 12:03 AM

Panic. I can't help but like this song. Not sure why.

Death & the Maiden 10.27.2008 02:02 AM

I forgot Bigmouth Strikes Again.
