PITCHFORK GIVES BIGFOOT'S CD A 8.7
Bigfoot: I Need A Bigfoot: Sasquatch Hits Are For Squares [Def Jam; 2008] Rating: 8.7 * Buy it from Insound * Download it from eMusic Yet another reunion, you might think, seeing indie-rock icon Thurston Moore's (Sonic Youth) face on that horrid MS Paint art cover. It's actually quite accurate: Bigfoot features Steve Albini on acoustic guitars, Steve Shelley on Fruity Loops and Steve Jobs on iPod. On top of that, Thurston and his Steves decided to collaborate with Merzbow, Wolf Eyes, Soulja Boy and other noise legends. Actually, only reading the cover you can easily think that this album isn't going to be worth more than a 3.8. But listening to the actual record kind of blows this instant impression away: this isn't your average noise record. As soon as you'll hear Shelley's 4 on the floor deflagrations (actually reminding more Kompakt records than Daydream Nation) on the opening tune, "Her Brother Thinks She's Just A Motherfucking Bitch, And You Know It's Right, Dude" (sic), you'll know that these Sasquatch Hits are going to blast off your dancefloor. We're talking about constantly surprising music (seriously, Steve Albini covering Dragonforce in a country version with Coco Gordon Moore and Xasthur screaming their lungs out over it is pretty much the freakiest musical experience you'll ever hear), challenging and innovative, yes, but always with a pop sensibility. The record's highlight is clearly "I Like 2 Move It, Do U Like 2 Move It Too?", the Reel 2 Real cover, which transforms the lyrics of the original europop hit into something more philosophical, which Socrate would've probably been proud of ("I like to move it move it, but do I actually know why I like to move it move it ? Is it because subconscious parts of my mind are compelling me to do it or just because it's a pleasant way to move my body? And if I find it a pleasant way to move it, is it because I have subconscious orders as well? Either way, you like to, MOVE IT"), while the demoniac bass is still incredibly compelling, pushing you to blast the dancefloor since the first notes. This is a nice collection of the finest dancefloor music you'll hear this week and of metaphysical landscapes, reminding you of airlock highways - or stuff like that. * MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/thafuckinbigfootizback * Video: Bigfoot: "I Like 2 Move It, Do U Like 2 Move It Too?" on Pitchfork.tv - Marc Hogan, October 28, 2008 |

CHEWBACCA ADMITS BEING A BIGFOOT FAN
![]() "MT: So what are your latest musical crushes? -Chewie: Bigfoot. I've always liked the fact that they mixed extreme harsh noise with 4/4 techno beats, but lately their tunes have really taken insane and epic proportions. Sasquatch Hits is 2009 album of the year" |
This thread made me smile.

BIGFOOT PERFORMED "NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP" LAST NIGHT WITH RICK ASTLEY
But the biggest surprise was still when, after playing a fired-up three seconds grindcore song, Steve Shelley suddenly pumped a psychedelic dub beat, while Moore suddenly played Never Gonna Give You Up's catchy melody in a deafening larsen. Rick Astley then came on stage, coming from the back of the crowd by slamming on the pit. From there on, everything became really crazy, like a fantastic hysteria. People were so on the song that they played it thrice. |
you made me laugh like 10 times ?
has big foot recorded 'the legend of blood yeti' ? :D ![]() |

PITCHFORK REVIEWS FUCK DA YOOF EP ![]() Bigfoot: Fuck Da Yoof EP [Geffen; 2008] Rating: 7.4 Bigfoot's debut album, the Pitchfork Best New Music's Sasquatch Hits Are For Squares, was a joyous and cacophonous mess of dancehall, harsh noise, europop, neo-acousmatic and happy hardcore. On this new EP, though, the band - and in particular his leader Thurston Moore -, sets the mood to something more violent, and, dare I say it, radical. This, you can actually guess only seeing the artwork for the album - Bigfoot has the ability to make things clear on first look. After the dramatic Sonic Youth split yesterday, Thurston decided to come and write a bunch of tracks about it. And though he shared a band with Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon (e.g.: his wife) for nearly 30 years, he isn't really tender about them on this record (he does not say anything mean about Steve Shelley though, because, according to the cover, he's cool. Yeah, Thurston). The EP begins with the seminal Fuck You, I'm Taller Than You, a one minute and a half hardcore punk song which involves a gospel choir and lyrics about Thurston's size and the power it gives him. The record continues with a bunch of tracks about his old bandmates: Lee gets the ragga one, Unlike What Lee Said, I've Got A Master-Dik (which follows a statement on Ranaldo's myspace) - featuring Sean Paul and Shaggy as special guests -, while Kim gets The Wife...: it begins with a dissonant version of John Cage's 4:33, but then comes a real reggae song about Gordon's overuse of bottox. Funny. Steve Shelley gets a 7 minutes pamphlet on how the donnuts he eats are actually symbol of corporate America, while Steve Albini cranks up the accordion. Finally, the epic title track comes: a 27-minute long post-punk song featuring Mark E. Smith, where the two indie icons, Mark and Thurston, keep rambling about how Sonic Youth suck - at the end of the track, Smith also adds that he hates his bandmembers as much as squirrels. Pretty awesome. At the end of the record, Justice tears up the dancefloor with a techno remix of the first song, which was strangely created before Sonic Youth split - and therefore, before Thurston wrote the song. Anyway, a statement of Fluo Kids Incorporation announced this morning that this remix had been voted as the new Fluo Kids hymn. Though Bigfoot doesn't reach the perfection of Sasquatch Hits there, this record is still a great proof that the band definitely has things to say. * Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thisisbigfootnofuckingyouth * MP3: Bigfoot - Fuck You, I'm Taller Than You - Nitsuh Abebe, October 31, 2008 |
