Horror video games
I finally got Half-Life 2 because I found out that my computer can in fact run it, and I no I don't consider Half-Life to be a horror game, but the upcoming They Hunger: Lost Souls mod is impossible to ignore. For anyone lucky enough to play They Hunger 1 & 2, and the first half of 3 (the second half brought the series down), it was one of the best games I've ever played. (If you have Half-Life, you can find the mods free if you look.) But I'm stoked for the release, which is said to be the start of a new They Hunger series.
But anyway, there've been threads about horror movies, threads about video games, but I haven't seen a horror video game thread. I personally find them much scarier than movies (because of the need to react, probably) and I think they deserve a thread. Maybe there has been one, but not while I've been on the board, so I apologize if that's true. Evidently there are at least a few Silent Hill fans; probably quite a few have played Resident Evil or Fatal Frame. Some favorites? Experiences? Currently playing something? Upcoming games you're looking forward to? |
half-life 2 is great. the PC version is much better then the xbox one.
the silent hill series good. the game called f.e.a.r. looks fun and scary ![]() |
I'm a big fan of Resident Evil. I just love the whole hopelessness and tragedy of Raccoon City.
|
I'm a huge SH and RE fan. Fatal Frame kicks major ass too but what I really want right now is Rule of Rose. I'm not sure if it's getting a western release though. I've only played the first Half Life becuz I don't want an x-box and my pc is shit.

FATAL FRAME. Best modern video game.
Devil May Cry was really cool a long time ago. The original one. |
I found the japanese trailer for Rule of Rose. Check it out, this game looks amazing.
320 x 240 (8.8 MB) 640 x 480 (19.7 MB) And here's the setup: March, 1930. A young girl named Jennifer, whose parents were killed in a tragic airship accident, is taken to the Rose Garden Orphanage, located in a remote portion of the English countryside. What Jennifer discovers is a dilapidated building and a ragtag mob of children who call themselves the "Aristocracy of the Red Crayon." The demented residents of Rose Garden kidnap Jennifer and take her into the dark heart of an impossibly large zeppelin, on a meandering course for a distant land. Now, with the help of a canine companion named Brown, Jennifer has to find valuable gifts for the Aristocracy, or suffer a fatal punishment for her insolence... I am so excited about this game. Here are some screenshots. |
Ravenholme is sort of scary.

yeah snake and cloud are the greatest characters. The metal gear series is the greatest series of all time. |
Rule of Rose looks pretty good, but it's hard to tell what it actually is. The trailer seems like it tries to skip around the scary stuff, only hinting at it briefly. And you're right about the US release. IGN says August 29.
And ya, I forgot about Ravenholme. I watched my friend play through it and I do remember that part. I didn't like the guy, though. Those types of things are best to be kept lonely. I could have sworn F.E.A.R. got horrible reviews. I ignored it because of that. But now I'm looking and it got 9's. Huh...Maybe someone I know just told me that and I believed them. |

Nice. Retro horror. Haven't played that one but I just downloaded it.
This game scares me. I haven't really played it much and don't know where anything is, so everything startles me. Damn bathtub. ![]() |

Ha ha....yeah it's pretty fucking hard. It was kind of scary though when it first came out. All of a sudden you'd be walking along and Mr. Voorhees would come out of nowhere and fuck up yr world. |

No need to be so harsh there man. Yeah, I came across that information whilst posting the stuff. I had forgotten about the game until I saw this thread and had never looked up anything on it before. I had just read about and seen some pics in Play magazine's Japan section. |
Yeah i hate games on which you have to start all over.
Wasn't that with the first mario too? |
blood rayne

There is also Parasite Eve which SolidZach mentioned, those games are quite good, Clock Tower, Alone in the Dark, Eternal Darkness (which I haven't played but is supposed to be very good), Dino Crisis, House of the Dead is a fun shooter and another which I haven't played but looks great is Call of the Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth which is based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Some more lesser known/crappy games include Siren, The Suffering, Haunting Ground (which looks kind of good), Cold Fear, Nightmare Creatures etc. There's a game called Splatter House that has a sort cult status because of the over-the-top story and violence. Um, as rpgs go there is the Shin Megami Tensai series that look really rad but have eluded me since their release. There are three ps2 installments and a number of them on other consoles as well. There is another horror rpg but I can't think of the title right now. In it you would swap bodies and get new attributes and stuff, but whatever. And that's about all I know. |

I just got to Ravenholme in HL 2. It was a good idea to add the level - especially after that extremely long water-boat thing. Nice change of pace. I'm gonna wait 'til night though; I'm not feeling it right now.
A couple games that I've wanted to try are Siren and Clock Tower 3. I know Siren isn't supposed to be that good, but I've seen mixed reviews. It looks good, at least. Clock Tower is one of the kinds of games I have a hard time playing. I get way too anxious when I'm being chased. That's why I put SH4 on hold when trenchcoat started to become more frequent. When I need to keep running I get nervous and can't think quickly, and from what I've heard that's what Clock Tower 3 is. I've only played the first couple nights of Fatal Frame 1 when I rented it, so I'd like to finish that and check out the other two. It's just so hard to find for PS2. |

THAT BOAT LEVEL IS SO GAY. Ravenholme isnt even that great. Its just dark. |
You Posted Didn't You Zach?

What specs do you have? My computer isn't that good but it runs fine, even on medium settings. It just plays extremely slow when it's running on the battery. It actually runs better than Morrowind, though. Except that it takes forever to load.
