Rob like Vonnegut
and so do I.
|
hell yeah. I re-read Fates Worse Than Death last week. insane thoughts crossed my mind. deep depression followed by deep joy at being alive and then sadness at having lost my hero...
I am going to read timequake again, to feel his bitterness and hilarity again. (in timequake, the entire world is moved back in time one year and everone re-lives the entire year again without realizing it except for one man.) |
havent read TIMEQUAKE yet, though I own it.
I've read a big stack of his books, though. My favorites are probably Breakfast of Champions, and Cat's Cradle. |
I've never read any of his stuff, but I've heard a lot about it. Also, it just so happens that I just finished a book and haven't started a new one.
If I were to, say, start a Vonnegut book, where should I start? What book would you say is the quintessential Vonnegut? |
Slaughterhouse 5
Cat's Cradle Galapagos but they are all good. |
Good stuff - and he helped Dangerfield out in Back to School!

hahaha, yes he did.
|
Timequake is one of his best books. It's a shame it's not read more.
|
i've only read breakfast of champions, it's really good.
|
I intend to read him soon. I read a short story. Harrison Bergeron.
Didn't like it that much. It was alright. |
i found a couple of his at a thrift store and i've been looking for more but most places want too much money for them or don't have them
never listen to reviews people write about vonnegut, if you like one of his books you'll probably like all of them, everyone on the internet says "deadeye dick" sucks, but me,my mom, and the guy at the local bookstore all loved it |
not a big fan of "deadeye dick" or "bluebeard" - but i love:
cat's cradle breakfast of champions timequake the latest read was "a man without a country" - which flowed like a lazy sunday afternoon chat with your semi-deranged tipsy great uncle - the one that your mom probably tells you to spend less time with.. . |

I agree. There is some REAL sharp bitterness in that book hough, as if vonnegut was so far beyond thinking humanity was going to ever do the right thing by itself and the earth we live in...Maybe that bleakness gets to some people. |
some of his books are more "fantastical" and some are more about life in midwestern america, like deadeye dick, of god bless you mr rosewater.
I am a painter and bluebeard always has struck a deep chord with me. |
Has anyone ever read Venus on the Halfshell? Philip Jose Farmer pretended to be Kilgore Trout and actually wrote it.

Yes. I have a very awesome old paperback of it. It's OK. SIRENS OF TITAN is a good one, too. For fantastical. And MOTHER NIGHT is another excellent "realistic" one. |
mother night may be the single most fatalistic pessimistic of the bunch! the movie they made with Nick Nolte was amazingly well-done,a nd very good stuff.
|
Yes, the movie was incredible, I thought. It was a perfect transcription of the pages. Great.
The Slaughterhouse-5 film was meh. Breakfast of Champions film was pretty good, but the book is sooooooooo much better. I think that's it for Vonnegut films. Right? |
they did a really lame version of Harrison bergeron with sean astin
the slaughterhouse 5 film was so-so. It skipped over a lot of stuff to concentrate on the sci-fi aspects of the story. |
I think the book of Slaughterhouse-5 is too multi-dimensional to be a 90 film.
I think there was a teleplay of HAPPY BIRHTDAY WANDA JUNE. Maybe? |
I lost slaughter house 5 halfway through my read. It was a nice read.

i thought it was awful |
Quote:
Why? The book is my favorite Vonnegut book, so I certainly planned to be hard on this film. Surely it was EXACTLY how I pictured it in my mind, but it was far from awful in my mind. I thought it was a better adaptation than Slaughterhouse, but nowhere as good as Mother Night. |
all the actors were annoying except bruce willis, wayne hoobler and bunny and nick nolte were annoying, i didn't like the way they made the plot unfold,i wanted to see kilgore getting mugged in nyc and they made it into like a ten second scene and got rid of the suspense leading up to it
i pretty much thought every aspect of it was bad |
