The best THE FALL album
Hi dOOdz
I get to read a reference to the FALL in just about every thread on the board and i don't know much about them, What i've heard i didn't really get into... Here is yr mission: Recommend me THE album to own by THE FALL. not two, not three, not four don't give me the usual top 50 list, i'm too broke but i really want to own at least one, get used to the sound and maybe want to dive a little bit more later. That many boardies can't be wrong, so i need to investigate more. i said ONE only I really want my edgy indie rock riffs and really liked the batch of Fall SY covered if that's of any help. GOGOGOGO ;) |
grotesque (after the gramme)... it's as good as this:
![]() It's got all their best songs on it... how i wrote elastic man, the nwra, c'n'c's mithering, etc. Perverted by Language would be my favorite but I'm not a huge eat yourself fitter fan. |
I'm not sure, but I know enough to take Adam's word on The Fall.
|
The starters are 50,000 Fall fans and Hex...
Personally, I'd say Perverted by Language. I started with Levitate, which remains one of my favourites. |
You could do a lot worse that pick up "Imperial Wax Solvent", in me humble opinion - probably one of the better releases by the Gruppe this decade, and it does has the fabulous "50 Year Old Man" on it too...
|
Perverted by Language.
|
I'd go with Perverted by Language too, although This Nation's Saving Grace would be another good starting point.
Although I like it as an album, I don't think Imperial Wax Solvent would work all that well as an introduction. I'd stick with the classic Brix-era albums. So as you asked for only one: ![]() |
Wow. I've been posting here since 2001, and I think that's the first time that two whole people have agreed with me off the bat.
Yes. Perverted by Language. It's got enough murk and confusion, and enough silly, and enough things to melt the brave souls who take it on. |
hey there's consensus here.
will definitely check this one out! Cheers dOOdz [/end of thread] |
The Unutterable
|
My favourite is strangely Live At The Witch Trials. I don't know why but it just seems so much more interesting than other Fall records (though to call other Fall records uninteresting is a joke in itself).

You do still exist here! Huzzah! (I likely said that last time you posted and I was actually reading the thread). |
I've read through threads on here from when this new version of the board started. And everytime I see Hip Priest post, it ALWAYS seems to be about The Fall. Crazy. Man loves his Fall.
|
Dragnet or Live At The Witch Trials
|
Still think it's The Unutterable
|
This Nation's Saving Grace
Grotesque Perverted by Language Live at the Witch Trials Dragnet I love lots of things, but the Fall more than most. |
Hex Endunction Hour is stunning. Just amazing. One of the best of the 80s. Buy it. "The Classical" is THE Fall track at least.
|
If I absolutely had to pick only one, Live at the Witch Trials. However, This Nation's Saving Grace and Hex Enduction Hour are incredibly close.
|
Live at The Witch Trials or This Nation's Saving Grace - 50/50

Yeah, each represents one very positive extreme of the band. Witch Trials is significantly lower fidelity and closer to their punk roots (though I shudder to use that word to describe them) while This Nation's Saving Grace takes on the art/prog influences without losing their grounding. |
I posted some time ago that 'This Nation's Saving Grace' was the first Fall album I bought, then I remembered that I had bought 'Shiftwork' on cassette way before and totally forgotten. It has a few good tracks on it. It's difficult with The Fall 'cause they made so many records I haven't even heard, so those two are my favourite for now.
|
I'd vote for Perverted By Language. This album is perfect. Just because it has "Hexen Definitive / Strife Knot" and "Wings" on it means it's a classic
|
dragnet or grotesque, or slates.
everything they did from 1983 onwards becomes incrementally more shit |
Actually, yeah, Slates is technically my favorite, but it's so short I didn't want to reccomend it.
|
If yr a SY fan, I suppose getting the albums that have the songs that SY covered on 4 TUNNA BRIX is a good entry. Right?
|
This Nation's Saving Grace is a good starter album yeah.

Not really, at least not as an assumption. I actually like "The Frenz Experiment" myself, but it's far from their best work, and represents the pop side of the band rather than the more experimental and noise rock sides. Some SY fans might like it, but others tend to hate it. Which I think is why they chose to cover "Victoria" at that Peel session, to fuck shit up. |
I'd go with hex..... Or perverted if you ignore "eat y'self fitter" really fucking annoying song.
|
slates !!!!
|
I always go Perverted, but theres just something about Dragnet that keeps pulling me back to it. I dont even know what it is, the production is unseemly, half the songs are simplistic jingles (Printhead, ChocStock, Flat of Angles, Dice Man) but i still love it.
Hex, of course, is the no.1 for most people with good reason. Imperial Wax Solvent was a load of cack though and dont let anyone tell you that youre a philistine for knowing it. |
I need to replace my copy of grotesque it is so worn down. I love the shimmery overchorused guitar on the first 2 albums, and the songs are extremely hummable and lyrics super clever.
he took a bluey and he called Totale. |

Theres a live version of NWRA on "Totally Wired: The best of The Fall" which is well worth checking out and far better than the original. Another point; Infotainment Scan is only to be bought once youve become a Fall fan, it doesnt really make sense without a whole lot of context. |

Uh, I note no shimmery overchroused guitar effects on "Live At The Witch Trials" or "Dragnet". Shorely shome mishtake? |

Oh, I dunno. I really like that set, though of course they were just fucking around. In the context of showing up at the Peel session as the ultimate hyped band of the day and knowing it and deciding to do all covers of then band Peel featured most often(instead of alternate takes of their own songs as was pretty much the tradition) it was a stroke of brilliance. And they're fun versions, particularly "My New House" with Thurston adding the line "I've got Steve Shelley in the basement!" The only one that I don't really like is "Victoria" and that's a Kinks cover to begin with. |
Dragnet is another favorite of mine... "Before the Moon Falls" is in my top 5 fall songs.
REAL NEW FALL is really good, too, don't think anyone's mentioned that one yet... it's their best since their first 10 albums... |

Nah, I actually really enjoyed that Peel session. Weird hearing one of my favourite rock bands covering another of my favourite rock bands. |
Yeah, that SY covering The Fall session is okay....
The Fall covered Beefheart on a peel session. That was pretty crazy. The Necessity of Swallowing - The Sin of Spilling Seed Most of us are familiar with the Biblical story of Onan, whose sin against God was that of spilling his seed on the ground: And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. (Genesis 38:9)This scriptural passage has traditionally been used as an injunction against masturbation. However, upon closer reading, it becomes apparent that this scenario has nothing to do with masturbation at all. Onan was not masturbating; he was copulating with his brother’s wife (and there was a good reason for that, in God’s plan). His sin was pulling out (coitus interruptus) and ejaculating on the ground rather than into the woman. He did so in order to avoid impregnating her. However, he could have easily avoided God’s wrath (and the penalty of death), by simply having the woman fellate him and then swallow his semen. This would have kept him from impregnating her, as well as completely prevented the spilling of seed that was an offense in God’s eyes. The extreme case of Onan aside, how bad is it in general to spill semen? The Old Testament ranks it with other acts of uncleanliness that meet with God’s disapproval: And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even. 17 And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even. (Leviticus 15:16-17) Getting ejaculate on oneself or one’s clothing results in uncleanness that requires extensive reparations and atonement. Obviously one simple way to prevent the spillage of semen is to have your partner perform fellatio and swallow the emission. In fact, in light of these scriptures, performing fellatio to completion and then spitting out the resulting emission seems almost unthinkable. The Benefits of Swallowing - Drink of the Living Water Aside from swallowing semen as a measure to prevent the waste and spillage of seed, ingesting ejaculate can have spiritual benefits, as we will see. Although the Old Testament makes reference to the bitterness of semen (And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water. [Numbers 5:24]), the New Testament casts the act of consuming ejaculate in a much more affirming light, as in the following passage, where Jesus speaks to the woman of Samaria about the gift of “living water”: Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?...15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." (John 4:10-16)“Living water” in this context refers to semen, which literally is the liquid of life. As Christ indicates, drinking of the “living water” provides a spiritual replenishment for the soul. When the woman asks Jesus where she can get this “water”, he tells her to fetch her husband, clearly with the intention of instructing her on how to fellate him and swallow his semen. Oral Sex in Christ In summary, we can say that the Scripture supports and even encourages the act of oral sex between loving heterosexual partners. Moreover, the Bible specifically encourages fellatio to completion (orgasm) with the female partner consuming or swallowing the ejaculate. This prevents spilling seed, which is an affront to the Lord, and also provides spiritual benefit to the receiving partner. Oral sex has the added benefits of preventing unwanted pregnancies and helping couples satisfy their sexual urges while preserving their chastity until marriage. For these reasons, all Christian men and women should feel confident and comfortable including oral sex as part of their sexual life in accordance with God’s will. |
perverted by klanguage and hex enduction hour....
myu vote goes to perverted because it has garden on it.. close call! |
