green day appreciation thread

i've been listening to them a lot lately and i think they're just such a fun band, i don't get why so many people hate them. sure, a lot of their stuff suck. but songs like "she" and "i was there".. simply pop punk at its best.

al shabbray 01.12.2009 04:43 PM

yes, have to admit that I listened a lot to them a lot of years ago. pretty good memories are connected, while listening to them. but just to the albums BEFORE "warning"
some of the most easy and fun songs to cover with your band too

Sonic Youth 37 01.12.2009 04:46 PM

Hell no except for "Longview" about once every year.

demonrail666 01.12.2009 04:51 PM

I don't have any strong feelings either way. I quite like some of their songs when I hear them on the radio but would hardly consider myself a fan. I tend to think that they get a rough deal mostly from people who quite liked them at one point, but now feel that they've grown out of them. Either that or they went to a school full of Green Day fans. Otherwise why would they inspire such hatred?

al shabbray 01.12.2009 04:54 PM

I dont hate them.
and I just listened to them while beeing in my teens because I just liked them a lot, and that was the time where everybody was listening to that KoRn/limp Bozkit trash around me.
I was a lil bit dissapointed by their latest releases because they lacked this kinda "I dont care but still having fun" -energy of the early releases.

Sonic Youth 37 01.12.2009 04:58 PM

I must have heard that "Good Riddance" song about 10,000 times during my high school years, 7,500 of the times being in my senior year. Hence my extreme dislike.

sarramkrop 01.12.2009 05:02 PM

Them and Offspring = shit

Never liked their singing, their records, their jumping, their piercings, their clothes, their tatoos. Everything is just wrong about them. Wrong.

Haha, put like that it's hard to disagree.

acousticrock87 01.12.2009 05:29 PM

I don't like to bag on people's tastes, so it's cool that you can appreciate them. But I really, really can't. Anymore, that is.

On a side note, if I ever get a song of theirs stuck in my head, no matter what song, it inevitably evolves into "Happy Together" by the Turtles.

ZEROpumpkins 01.12.2009 05:34 PM

I just throw on some Superchunk instead. They do pop-punk better than many other bands.

Rob Instigator 01.12.2009 06:26 PM

I have hated them since time immemorial. I cannot stand fucking dipshit assholes singing in faux-british accents cuz it's so "punk". It makes me sick. fuck them and their goddamned ridiculous musical "legacy"

I hate them and I want them dead.

Rob Instigator 01.12.2009 06:27 PM

superchucnk, screeching weasel, descendents, all a million times better than green day,.

ZEROpumpkins 01.12.2009 06:33 PM

Oh yes, Descendents. Been digging them a lot lately.

While I hate green day I wouldn't say their accents are faux-british...though I know what you mean and I hate bands like that. I'd say the singer from greenday has more of a faux-drunk kinda manly valley girl accent fucked up on pills.

it's like half slur, half retarded, half drunk, and alot of trying to be cool/valley bullshit west coast crap.

are they even from the west coast?

yeah from the oakland area.

GeneticKiss 01.12.2009 09:01 PM

I would rather listen to the Offspring, and that's saying alot.

uhler 01.12.2009 09:40 PM

green day is actually the reason i started listening to music. i don't know why i picked "dookie" as the first album to really listen to, but i did. plus, both green day and nirvana are the reason i checked out bands that were lesser known in 1995.

DeadDiscoDildo 01.12.2009 09:59 PM

My first tape was nirvana inutero and my first cd was dookie

uhler 01.12.2009 10:08 PM

both my mom and dad bought "dookie" so i already it. same with all the nirvana cds.

i don't remember my first cd i bought (so it must have sucked), but my first tape was "damaged" and my first vinyl record was some old screamo record that i don't remember or an old hot water music record.

I don't think the accent thing is an attempt to be cool. It's just a way of singing in a certain range without sounding terrible. I think it's kind of the same as how David Bowie's voice completely changes when he gets into certain ranges--except Bowie sounds fucking awesome, and Armstrong sounds fucking obnoxious.

DeadDiscoDildo 01.12.2009 11:29 PM

True it's probably just to barely get to certain notes...completely untrained...

yeah that song is fucking terrible. my high school played that at the graduation before mine and at my graduation.

Sonic Youth 37 01.13.2009 01:29 AM

It was played a graduation, the graduation dinner, the end-of-the-year Senior awards/prediction thing, countless times during the year while people were working on that junk. Just urgh.

DeadDiscoDildo 01.13.2009 01:39 AM

Sonic Youth 37 01.13.2009 01:41 AM

I was friends with people that were on the staff and I pleaded with them to not use it. I said that I would provide alternative that would blow that away if only they gave me the chance, but my offer was met with scoffs and "This is the perfect song for such an occasion"

dionysusundone 01.13.2009 02:27 AM

I hate his and the guy from Offspring's voices equally.

atsonicpark 01.13.2009 05:46 AM

I first listened to Green Day a good 14 years ago. And they still suck.

_slavo_ 01.13.2009 05:58 AM

ha, a funny coincidence. I listened to the first Green Day album (1,039 smoothed out slappy hours) some 2 days ago .. first time after maybe 13 years. And still think those songs are great. Not music-wise, but memory-wise. Yeah, pre-pubescency years and all that jazz.

atsonicpark 01.13.2009 06:00 AM

I still love lots of music I loved when I was 12-14 years old, like KoRn and Deftones and Screeching Weasel and Slipknot and stuff... I have just always thought this band was... actually, they're pretty boring. Nothing to 'em.

The only thing I find slightly interesting is that their last album had, like, 10 minute songs on it. Of course, it was just 6 or 7 songs put together to make one song, and of course NOFX's "The Decline" already did that (with an 18 minute song) yeeeeeears ago.

_slavo_ 01.13.2009 06:03 AM

I don't know how about you Adam, but I did not evaluate or did not even think about music when i was 12 or 13. I lived with it, I listened to it with my friends, I played it at parties. But I know that wasn't your point.

atsonicpark 01.13.2009 06:08 AM

Well, I guess that was a bit off-topic anyway, since I was listening to Green Day when I was 7, not 12-14. And I certainly wasn't evaluating them at 7. But I have had to listen to them, in some form or another, at friend's house or on TV or on the radio or in movies or whatever, nearly my whole life. And I think they suck.

I don't think people are into bad music; I think they just haven't heard good music. So, when I say that I still like bands from a certain age, I guess I'm saying... even though I've heard all these amazing bands since then, these bands are still worth listening to .. to me. Green Day, however, was never worth listening to. To me.

I've always thought there was something fairly sinister about 40-something year olds with green spiky hair.
