U2 ripped off...

... Taylor Deupree with their new album cover.

US musician Taylor Deupree has alleged that the cover of U2’s forthcoming album is "an exact rip-off" of his own disc, ‘Specification. Fifteen’

The Irish rockers recently revealed the sleeve for "No Line On The Horizon", which is based on a photo by Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto.

In a online posting under the headline "U2 Album Cover…Have I Seen This Before?", Deupree admitted there was little chance of legal action saying "In the end, we all know who wins".

Outrageous!!!!

al shabbray 01.21.2009 01:54 PM

what?
maybe hiroshi sugimoto is to blame for selling it twice

Rob Instigator 01.21.2009 01:56 PM

I think it was also a 7" cover before.

either way, boring cover art

great photo, when seen in large context all big in yr face, but as a cover for a record?

!@#$%! 01.21.2009 01:57 PM

ive seen sugimoto's photographs and they are magnificent.

shouldn't the beef be between the photographer & taylor dupree, though? if u2 acknowledges sugimoto as a source-- who is the plagiarist?

sugimoto: "taylor dupree stole my photos!"

that would make more sense.

al shabbray 01.21.2009 01:57 PM

definately better on vinyl format then on cd (like almost every cover)
I wonder which market is the biggest for U2, CD or mp3?

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 02:03 PM

It's not like it's a radical, shocking, innovative image. Both of those boring, bland album covers suck. Fuck them both.

al shabbray 01.21.2009 02:04 PM

yes indeed...exact rip off, then shopped...would be more accurate

mangajunky 01.21.2009 02:11 PM

<sarcasm>yup - total ripoff - no one before these two had ever used images of a horizon in artwork and one obviously ripped off the other.</sarcasm>

_slavo_ 01.21.2009 02:37 PM

One of my alltime most favourite artists mentioned together with one of my least favourite ones, ALL IN ONE THREAD!

What a lucky day for me today.

That's true, and I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually turned into this. Maybe Sugimato was unaware TD used it, and TD was unaware that he needed the rights, assuming it was just a first come, first serve basis. It's possible that now Sugimato will, as you said, claim that he did give the rights to U2, and that TD will then be prosecuted.

By the way, I know nothing of this whole case, so everything I have said is uninformed speculation...

Rob Instigator 01.21.2009 04:30 PM

this image is the visual equivalent of how U2's "music" makes me feel.

greenlight 01.21.2009 05:05 PM

I would not call it exact, but yeah. so did you hear new U2 single? "put your boots on" or smth. like that. main riff sounds very familiar, that might be another rip-off, hehe, maybe not exact but very like. can't think which song exactly. it remind me something by RATM, or Soundgarden, or Stone Temple Pilots?

Toilet & Bowels 01.21.2009 05:44 PM

as if u2 have ever heard of taylor deupree anyway.

u2 aren't the first and they won't be the last.... just perhaps, and i'm playing devils advocate as i don't like u2, but, just perhaps it may be a homage....

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.21.2009 06:03 PM

Not a surprise, U2 is the most unoriginal band ever.

That one song a few years back was a total ripoff of Keep Me Hanging On

ZEROpumpkins 01.21.2009 08:00 PM

OMG ITS EXACTLY THE SAME HOLY SHIT WOWOWOW

This has never happened before

jon boy 01.21.2009 08:16 PM

they also ripped off themselves and aha and me.

pbradley 01.21.2009 08:20 PM

Everyone involved is ripping off a watercolor I did in high school.

atsonicpark 01.21.2009 08:27 PM

*cue someone saying U2 ripped off "Dirty Boots"*

Toilet & Bowels 01.21.2009 08:37 PM

it's interesting reading through the comments on the 12k blog and comparing the comments left between the 2 camps of fans and how strikingly different they are.

DeadDiscoDildo 01.22.2009 01:53 AM

a more appropriate title, the one I was hoping for?

"U2 ripped off the face of the planet"

acousticrock87 01.22.2009 03:56 AM

Sigh.

pbradley 01.22.2009 04:14 AM

Bono ripped off his face during the inaugural celebration.

PAULYBEE2656 01.22.2009 08:09 AM

new u2 single sounds like a queens of the stone age song covered by keane or someone.....
