Haven't listened to this one in a few years but I really enjoyed the 2 weekends it took me to listen to it all. Would you like to listen to it all? I'm sure most of you already have but...

i've heard bits and pieces but never the whole thing, i'm a big fan of weird endurance tests though so one day i'll do the merzbox in a weekend

i still need to program myself to listen to the well-tuned piano.

Haha. I listened to the well-tuned piano in one sitting. Twice! It's too amazing for words.

but, see, it's like an acid trip, you have to program yourself and say "i'm not doing anything for the next five hours but listen to lamonte".

Trust me though man, once you get done listening to it, you only have one thought.... 'Damn, that piano was well- fuckin tuned!"

why do people have to treat the merzbox like some sort of marathon?

I'm currently listened to the entire merzbox AGAIN. Not in one sitting and it will probably take a few weeks, but I'm listening to it all on headphones this time.. last time (a good 5 or 6 years ago), I mainly listened out of my computer speakers.

Anyway, a lot these albums are really great. I find most of the discs extremely interesting. There's some pure bullshit here or there but I'm surprised by some of the experiments on here. Bizarre detuned piano and prepared guitar stuff here or there, gongs (probably sampled), what appears to be Merzbow making food, breathing, coughing, burping, fixing a hole in his wall or whatever... also, as a bonus, a nice smooth free jazz set at some Russian festival and pure rock action. I don't think any of the discs approach Pulse Demon or Rainbow Electronics, but SONS OF SLASH NOISE METAL and the 4 SCUM (Scissors for Cutting Up Merzbow) albums on here are really awesome.

I definitely reccomend downloading this and burning it!!

its great..... actually i lie. i havent heard the last few discs yet but in time....

It is great!! I'm really surprised by the consistent quality of Merzbow releases.

What is far more important to me is that, disc after disc, I was completely surprised by the variation in sounds and the amazing abundance of styles. I heard pieces here that I never would have thought were produced by Merzbow. And this from an artist I have followed avidly for 10 years and from whom I have heard well over a hundred albums. While I wanted to avoid bringing the breadth of this set into the discussion, it should be noted that over 50 hours of music, Masami only very infrequently lapses into repetition as he continually introduces new techniques and kinds of sound. It is a huge testament to Masami Akita's talent that he constantly refines his tactics and reinvents his sound, while maintaining an unusually high level of quality. To say he is not a one-trick pony is a drastic understatement.

so I've decided to do a marathon of strictly listening to the merzbox and nothing else until I complete it. Not fully sure why, but it's been a fun ride. Especially when listening to it at work and seeing customers pissed off. Started on Wednesday night, and am around 26:30 in to it. Could finish this off as quickly as Saturday night

it's a great set. specifically the discs smack dab in the middle of the set.

so far my favourites have been solonoise, paradoxa paradoxa, mechanization takes command, dying mapa tapes 3-4, pornoise 1 and pornoise extra.

oops meant to say tuesday night. For some reason thought it was friday, no thursday

I haven't gone through the whole box yet, even though I wish I had more time to do so.

Ahem.....I am a Merzboxee, and I treasure the fucking thing! I'm constantly surprised at how good nearly all of the 50cds are. These ain't throwaways. Roger Richards at Extreme deserves a Knighthood for having the balls to do this.

I did the chronological listening initially, but now, whenever I want to delve into the box (usually weekly) I ask my wife to pick a number between 1 and 50. :)

that's what i thought so i started listening this morning and i'm only on disc 9 now, i don't think it's possible to hear it all in one weekend even without any breaks.
