what is the 'american dream'?

during the election i was hearing a lot about the 'american dream' so i was wondering (foolishly) what your interpretation of the american dream is?

joe11121 01.26.2009 10:56 PM

Living in the Playboy Mansion. (minus the old guys) haha.

atsonicpark 01.26.2009 11:53 PM

Hmm.

I guess the "American" dream is to make enough money to support yourself and get by and not be in debt by doing something in life you enjoy.

My dream, and I'm currently living it I guess, is to save up enough money now so I don't have to worry in the future so I can have plenty of time to fuck off and have no responsibility and hopefully to travel to beaches and to play noise shows.

pbradley 01.27.2009 12:00 AM

Doing a lot of drugs in Las Vegas.

Alex's Trip 01.27.2009 12:11 AM

To find what makes you happy and do it, and living the life you want to live.

It's either that or the two-story house, white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a car in the garage deal.

So what do you suppose I am trying to say?

Sonic Youth 37 01.27.2009 12:48 AM

That the American dream is horseshit? I don't know. Water testing a Mercedes would be fun, though.

gualbert 01.27.2009 01:06 AM

You live outside of the US, where life is gloomy and you're poor and oppressed by a corrupt and tyrannical government, so you leave for the US and you become free, wealthy and even more.

Does it apply to every Americas ( north, south, Canada, Mexico, Colombia...)?
The use of 'America' as 'USA' bothers me.

We should be the United States of something else?

No.
But Brazil, Canada etc. are parts of America too.
Maybe shrink the term even more ( like Rica ) so there will be no confusion.

pbradley 01.27.2009 01:32 AM

Like Costa Rica?

gualbert 01.27.2009 01:33 AM

D'oh!
Erica, then.

pbradley 01.27.2009 01:39 AM

United States of that one slut from high school?

✌➬ 01.27.2009 01:41 AM

Actually Mexico is called Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Basically the same thins as what the U.S.A. is doing.

That's why I could never be an optimist.

acousticrock87 01.27.2009 04:52 AM

The American dream is an opportunity to join the reveling bourgeoisie sex market. If you're lucky. Or a sniveling bastard.

pbradley 01.27.2009 04:57 AM

The American dream is a sickness unto death!

Rob Instigator 01.27.2009 10:05 AM

the american dream is to make something out of yourself via hard work. and to be able to do it without the cultural, caste, religious, etc oppressions that keep people "in their place" in much of the world.

Are you sure that's the meaning?

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 01.27.2009 12:30 PM

The american dream is to be the best.

Rob Instigator 01.27.2009 12:43 PM

why is that?

Rob Instigator 01.27.2009 12:44 PM

The "american dream" is NOT the dream of the country AMERICA.

It is a dream held by those OUTSIDE the USA about what can be accomplished in the USA through hard work and determination.
One can BECOME PRESIDENT damnit.

that's the "american" dream.
Dig?

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.27.2009 12:45 PM

Can't the American Dream be held by those within the US as well? It seems rather silly to think of it as a purely external sort of thing.

Glice 01.27.2009 01:33 PM

Does anyone else think of Bomb 20 when they think of the American Dream? No-one's uploaded the song to youtube, stupidly, so no linky linky today.

afterthefact 01.27.2009 01:37 PM

Apparently, the American Dream is being able to do an image search for any topic and find a suitable picture to fit your conversation.

My fellow Americans, our dream has finally been realized.

sarramkrop 01.27.2009 01:38 PM

Everybody else's nightmare.

Kloriel 01.27.2009 01:46 PM

of course, but mainly....

acousticrock87 01.27.2009 03:12 PM

What Rob said is technically correct, but in reality the American dream is a subconsciously capitalist ideology imposed on the middle class for oppressing the poor.

Glice 01.27.2009 03:21 PM

"...Imposed on the middle class for opressing the poor"

That's one hell of a sentence.
