I'm interested in, when exactly did the entire ''Metal'' genre split into sub-genres and factions. In the 80's, it seemed it was just metal, maybe some time in the 90's the great divide came and brought ''nu-metal'' and well since then there's all kinds and really, most of it sounds similar enough to just be called metal.

Sorry to stray off topic, but yes of course Christian metal is going to be the best, simply because the bands are battling the demons from the netherworlds by screaming about salvation through Jesus. YES!

Early/Mid 80s as far as I know, Death Metal, Doom, Grind, Black Metal, Thrash all started around then. Did Power Metal start in the 80s?

I bought a Glaciial CD before I knew what they were about. If you can just get over the whole christer thing, they are pretty devastating.

I'm not really sure why a band's religious preference should play into what you think of the aeshetic of their musical output. I dnt think you need to be into Scientology to like Beck (or Flyentology to like El-P for that matter).

Underoath didn't used to suck. Their first couple CDs (something about depression, and something about crying), when they were actually black metal, were really good.

Now they're complete shit. Same with Norma Jean. They were good at one point, and now they make me want to kill myself. Which I guess is very metal in its own way...

Christian metal has simply devolved. Ironic.

As for other bands, I saw Extol and The Agony Scene in high school, and they were both pretty good at the time. Based on the music video, though, I'm guessing Agony Scene has gone to shit.

I have an acquaintance who fronts a Christian metal band. He gave me his band's CD to listen to a year ago, and it's still in its cellophane wrapper. Yes, I am closed-minded about this shit. Then again, the dude does not inspire me to listen. He's a real douche bag. He gave his more irreverant girlfiriend a copy of the bible for Christmas.

If you believe everything bad you've ever done is absolved by the acceptance of torture murder, you do need to make some black metal.

I think Christian metal is a way for musicians to feel good about making bad music.

anything labeled "christian" in music is done solely to sell albums, because the market is pretty huge. hundreds of thousands of sheltered teens whose parents will not allow them to purchase anything that is not aprooved by their youth pastor.
as soon as wide appeal is found the bands drop the "christian" tag and actually go out of their way to deny it. look at creed and evanescence.

yeah, this might be true for bands that sound like green day or papa roach, but black metal is a style of music where an anti christianity, pro satanist, or pro pagan stance is a given for every single band in the genre, so for a black metal band to come as being christian is firstly bizarre and pretty much antithetical to the founding concepts of the style, secondly has taken about 20 years to happen because who the fuck in their right minds starts a christian band within a supposedly satanic subculture? thirdly is marginalising yourself within something that is totally underground and obscure anyway, and fourthly the bands i linked are never going to sell many records (and by that i mean i'd be shocked if any of these groups sells more than more than 500 copies of their records) due the fucked up harsh nature of their music. which is to say nobody who only listens tochristian music is ever going to hear about this stuff because of where is comes from and what it sounds like.

art reflects the human experience, and music is the most potent of these reflections..

but with current, commercial Christian music, there is often a nefarious agenda having nothing to do with either art nor Jesus, but rather a sinister plot to monopolize the $$$ of the industry, replacing so-called "secular music" (a term I have never in my life heard except from these christian music industry sleeze balls) with "christian alternatives"..

exploiting Jesus to sell albums just rubs me the wrong way, both as a musician first and a christian second, however, the genuine and sincere Christian music I can understand completely, because even Sonic Youth is christian to me, by the feelings it creates in me as a Christian, which after all is the point of art.. and at times, there is nothing darker and more depressing than Christianity, the dirges of Lent I think carry the exact feeling of the darkest metal..

Not only is black metal as a style of music wholly separable from its associated ideology, but it makes more sense for Christianity to use it in response.

i used to have "something about crying". it actually wasn't bad when i first heard it. it was a little cheesy, but what black metal wasn't/isn't? the song you linked is way better than any song on the album i had. it's when they were starting to go more metalcore and then they went to whatever style they are now.

for a metalcore song it isn't half bad. too bad i think this stuff is boring now.
