The Shop Assistants were one of the greatest bands ever to walk this earth.
Wooden Shjips had much promised on their behalf, but didn't really deliver. White Hills do a very nice take on the whole post-Loop/Spacemen 3 drone/psych thing, with a bit of extra heaviness thrown in for good luck. I'm not sure that their legacy will be as great as that of their influences though. |
The Love Is So Fast - don't know them
Ducktails - saw him live last year which was pretty good, dunno his recorded output The Heads - good live band; like them somewhat less on record. White Hills - only heard their myspace stuff which was OK, might go see them on Roadburn Wavves - alright Smith Westerns - don't know them Yellow Tears - don't know them Sachiko - good Starving Weirdos - good The Hunches - don't know them Wooden Shjips - good on record, boring live Wet Hair - not as good as raccoo-oo-oon were The Shop Assistants - i liked the few things i've heard |
Don't know any of those, damn.
|
The Love Is So Fast - not bothered
Ducktails - like The Heads - like White Hills - don't know Wavves - whatevvs (see what i did there?) Smith Westerns - dunno Yellow Tears - dunno Sachiko - ok, some excellent stuff, some i don't like at all Starving Weirdos - ok The Hunches - like Wooden Shjips - like a lot on record, crappy when i saw them live Wet Hair - don't think i've heard them yet, crap name though The Shop Assistants - like, but i'd rather listen to the aislers set |
I only really know Wooden Shjips (over-rated sub-Hawkwind tosh when witnessed live, pretty average on record), and the Shop Assistants (wonderful)
EDIT - Didn't see The Heads mentioned when I first read this! - those guys totally kill live, and the records I've heard have been ace. Easily one of my fave current UK acts. |
White Hills are freaking EXCELLENT, and probably the band I want to open for the most right now.
|
Ducktails - excellent, i love every release i've heard
The Heads - i like Wavves - are ok Starving Weirdos - good Wooden Shjips - good Wet Hair - v.good the rest i don't know and will try to check out. |

I know a guy from Yellow Tears. They are FACE-MELTING live, but I think I'm out of my harsh noise phase.

never heard of a single one.
I should get out more. |
I like Sachiko a lot, but the bias is too strong for me to be objective. Too close to home, that one.
|
the only band i heard or really like is the shop assistants. well, i really like the shop assistants. wavves are hit and miss. mostly miss.
|
i only know wooden shjips. their album is excellent
it has a great groovey doors/noise rock vibe or something... its a shame you guys say they suck live, it sounds like music that would transfer well to a live setting |
Ducktails - great great beach time music. the upcoming LP on not not fun will rule
Starving Weirdos -good Wooden Shjips- good for what they do..garagey stuff Wet Hair- my favorite band of 2008! saw 'em live three times. I got an early copy of their upcoming record. AMAZING!! these guys were half of Racoo-oo-oon |
dnt... uh i'm jealous... can you give any tasty adjectives to describe new Wet Hair?
|
wavves I don't get the hype on but their (now ex I think?) drummer's side project Blessure Grave is good and his band with the Teenage Panzerkorps dudes is cool too Hollow Tongues.

didn't know that, am far more inclined to check them out now, has raccoo-oo-oon split? |

It seems increasingly the case that people are more into forming band names, than bands. |
wavves.... excellent
wooden shjips pretty good the rest are filed away for research purposes.... |
Quote:
yes, they have |
....since last year. but like i posted above, i thought raccoo-oo-oon were better. i've yet to see wet hair live though.
|

you mean that split 7", right? i bought that when i saw them on tour together. the heads played first and they did pretty much slay indeed. then wooden shjips played and they sounded really lifeless and dull compared to how they sound on their albums, almost like a doors cover band. then after them the butthole surfers played and they were so terrible that i walked out. it really couldn't have been anymore anti-climatic than that. |
the heads were excellent when i saw them

Yes, that one. I also have The Heads' 'Under Sided' album which is a fine record. ps: Melly, this thread reminded me to finally burn it for you, it's been over a year! |
The Heads - Is that the lot from Bristol, been around for yonks?
|
Quote:
Yes. Surprisingly underrated band after all these years. |
I've never heard them, but I've heard a lot of good said about them.
|
would've repped

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to demonrail666 again. |
I am, I've made like 6 really good band names... made some t-shirts for some... and yet, i've still never been in a band. face it, the music is the least-fun part of being in a band.
|
yeah, the music is just a necessary burden to get the girls!

here's an accurate description (not my own): "Cult electric gospel burning, flowing over layers of analog synth atmosphere and industrial trance punk. More focused around distinctive vocal, organ and synth arrangements, with touches of live drumming giving way to drum machine pulse and electronic spew. Melodic, upbeat, focused, dark, warm, cold, catchy, and confusing, Wet Hair is just beginning to grow into its own possibilities." when their upcoming lp "dream" comes out, GET IT, it's amazing |
sarram - cheers for the burn, nice one :)
pokkeherrie - thankx for the Heads live link - awesome sauce. |
They had a lot of their earlier records for sale at ATP In Between Days which I thought were long out of print. I think they've been re-releasing some of them.
Heads On Fire and Glitter Glamour Atrocity are their best albums I think. The latest s/t one is alright, but nowhere near as good as the other two in my opinion. But their recent EP Stolen Stars Left For No One is fantastic. White Hills are one of my favorite bands in the last few years. They have also been very kind to my band, which is flattering.
I see their guitar player very much as a kindred spirit musically. It's like he shares my exact sense of musical intuition. |
